Behind the Jump: Volume 5 - Quadrupedal Movement on Rails. A look at a variation on one of the fundamental conditioning exercises for parkour, known as quadrupedal movement or Groundwork. Working on railings, ropes and other thin obstacles adds a little extra difficulty to the drill.
GROUNDWORK draws on the primitive movement patterns observed at the earliest stage of humankind. Since the first step of human evolution, we have naturally been crawling, squatting and moving around on four limbs. This is the root of almost all locomotion before our body can stand up and combine movements in high gaits, and it’s how we learn to develop contra-lateral movement and builds the foundation for efficient biomechanics.
These are the same movements we naturally developed at a young age. The crawling phase of a baby is essential to the development of coordination, strength and musculature, so that he or she can progress to walking on two feet. Unfortunately, once we start to walk, we rarely go back to the ground, often leading to a lack of overall coordination and leg-dominant displacement skills.
GROUNDWORK offers a way to reconnect with your inner primal physical sense. There is a huge amount to gain by training low-gait and crawling techniques that develop a strong synergy between the upper and lower body. GROUNDWORK teaches bodyweight exercise skills that develop true practical strength, agility and body control
