There have been a number of requests for a closer look at the Cavalcade kitchen studio, so in this video I take you on the other side of the counter and into the kitchen. While the kitchen serves as the main studio for Cavalcade of Food videos, this is a real, working kitchen that is used multiple times a week. I often cook dinner here for personal gatherings with family and friends, as well as testing recipes. It is a kitchen that I designed myself and had custom built for ease of swapping stoves and other appliances. Come take a closer look at my favorite kitchen!

The studio kitchen reminds me of the kitchens in my home ec class. Besides cooking, we were taught how to keep everything clean and shiny. Although I was there in 1970, everything was from the 1950s. Adorable.

Love those cabinets! I always assumed they were rescued from a genuine ~1950's kitchen! Of course it makes sense that they look the part since they were designed and built the same way. Site-built cabinets and shelving are just a level of craftsmanship and quality you don't see anymore.

Hi Marc - I was hoping to find some old cabinets, but when people tear them out they often get damaged, so it was easier to have a carpenter make them from scratch. Thanks!

Being old as dirt I remember the first dishwasher I had. It was a Frigidaire. It was so new to us that my sister filled the detergent cup with liquid dish soap while I was at work. I had suds all over my floor. You can't imagine how hard it is to get liquid detergent cleaned out of a dishwasher, ha, ha. I love your channel for that reason it's a nice walk down memory lane.

Kevin, I'm so glad you brought us behind the scenes. The layout of the kitchen is excellent! It's so cozy & welcoming. Love your design & decor style. Love the vintage water dispenser! I'm sure that w/ the age of the Ben Franklin bldg you had to upgrade the service panel to accommodate higher amperages for the kitchen. On the shelves to the left of the vintage refrigerator (which my parents also had) appears to be some Fiesta dinnerware. Am I correct? You mentioned the cottage. Did you sell it, or have you just stopped recording there? There's a channel I think you & your viewers might wish to subscribe to: "Chit Chat with Granny Pat". She collects vintage Jadite, Fiesta dinnerware, Fostoria glassware & dinnerware, etc. I have recommended your channel to her as well. Finally, any time you wish to take us on tour through the Cavalcade of Food, please do. Thoroughly enjoy it! Hello to Ralph, Mary Ann, & Wally. God bless.

Hi Sallie! Thanks so much! Those dishes are not Fiesta, although I do have a collection of Fiesta (at my home). The ones you saw actually belonged to my grandma, and they are from the 30's. Those colors for dishes were popular during that period. I sold the cottage a number of years ago. For a time I owned three homes - too much! I'm glad be down to just one now. I will check out Granny Pat - sounds like a channel I'd enjoy! Thanks so much!

Another amazing video. Best studio kitchen tour ever; up till now I don't remember any cooking show giving a studio tour. The cabinet design is for function, modern kitchens hide everything, those are great if you never use the kitchen. It's a lot easier to slide a curtain, than to bang your shins on a door.
@cavalcadeoffood

Hi PLK - I'm constantly taking things in and out of those bottom cabinets, so having the curtains instead of doors makes it so much easier. Thanks!

It’s so good to see you enjoy that space. Not many people remember Ben Franklin stores but yes they were fixtures in many towns and sometimes were the only “dept” stores available. My mom still uses her untouched 1971 st Charles metal kitchen that she refuses to replace and her chambers ovens. She has a waste king stainless steel dishwasher that regrettably has to be replaced because the seals turned brittle and she couldn’t find anyone to replace them. Thanks for this great video.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 8 ай бұрын
Hi dlotboy - Ben Franklin stores were franchised and you would see them often in smaller towns where others like Woolworth and Kresge wouldn't put a store. So great that you mom has St. Charles metal cabinets! They held up better than many of the wooden cabinets of the era. Thanks!

I loved the kitchen tour and seeing everything close up. You changed the tea kettle on the stove to a glass coffee pot. My mom has the same stainless kettle and almost the same 40" GE stove with the tea kettle on the same right rear unit. I have the same dishwasher as you, installed new in 1985 and it still works great. You can't kill a Kitchen-Aid except by not using it. My cabinets are also made by my home builder on site and only last year did I have to fix a drawer after 38 years of use. Yes it's almost a lost art.

Waverly has had so many beautiful wallpaper choices throughout the years, wouldn't you agree? Thanks for sharing your collections. I have a lot of stuff, some inherited, so I try to rotate as often as I can. My grandmother would love to know that I use her Fostoria glass and Haviland china. My late Mom was so happy to know we would use her Noritake china and that it wouldn't get thrown away or hide in a box. I think vintage is really fun and it comes with stories and nostalgia. Life is precious, and I give thanks to the Lord Jesus. Also, I still use and really enjoy your 1948 BC chiffon cake recipe. Thank you!

Loved the kitchen tour, Kevin. It reminded me so much of my grandma's kitchen. She probably decorated her kitchen around 1952 and it stayed the same until she died in 1998. She even had the red formica-topped chrome table and the plastic Tupperware salt and pepper shakers you have on the table. 😅 Today I have her McCoy pottery cookie jar from the 1940s and a set of small pewter salt and pepper shakers, shaped like owls.

Thank you Kevin, I have always wanted an up close look at all the collectables in the kitchen. I grew up in a small three bedroom house, (there were five of us) and the largest room in the house was the kitchen! I live in a small two bedroom house where the largest room in the house is the kitchen. I love a big kitchen. My kitchen has so many more cabinets than Momma's and there is collectable goodness everywhere, but nothing like yours. We have a cowboy kitchen...Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, Hop-a-long Cassidy, Bonanza & John Wayne are everywhere. I did it for my husband! Added some colored glass for me. Can't wait to see what you do next!

Are you retired from teaching at Wayne State? Nice behind the scenes look. The cottage kitchen will always be my favorite... so many fond memories of past episodes, but you have captured some of that charm with the studio kitchen. Wouldn't it be interesting to do an episode with your friends and family as a studio audience? Everyone could sit at those vintage dining tables and enjoy the filming and participate possibly? I just think it would make for a fascinating show! Wonderful episode. Thanks for sharing!

I loved that cottage kitchen too. The main thing was it's red/white colorway, and it still had some vintage cabinets/sink area and funky layout. I recall Kevin saying that the cabin originally had no kitchen and that the present one was built in I think he said, early 50's from a back porch. That is the esthetic I'd love to use for inspiration when I redo my tired kitchen, but lit it with vintage preheat fluorescent fixtures from the 40's instead of the 2 lamp, T-5 generic one I have now (came with the house).

Hi Mike - the cottage kitchen was fun, although small and a bit cramped, but I could work with it. I was glad to have a space where I could finally display the 45 year collection and be able to start sharing it with folks through the videos, so for me it was the right choice. Thanks!

Thank you so much for a wonderful episode! I’ve always been curious about how you designed the kitchen. I think it’s amazing you were able to have modern cabinets made as they would be in a 1950s kitchen. They look perfect and what a joy to be able to enjoy, essentially a vintage kitchen when it was new. I thoroughly enjoy this channel and as a collector of vintage items and antiques it’s so nice to see somebody using antique and vintage appliances to tell the story of the 20thc and giving a virtual experience of what food preparation was like in the 50s. Its so neat to see how these kitchen appliances would’ve looked and worked as new. I think that in this modern world where things become obsolete in months, it’s wonderful to showcase the beauty of quality design and longevity of the past and most importantly, the charm of that bygone era.

Seen a few videos now, and the thing that impressed me the most is definitely how accurate you got the cabinets. When I build my house, it'll be a decision between having cabinets like this made, or getting metal ones. I guess budget will decide.

Whatever you decide, I'm sure they will look great. The metal ones are hard to find in good original condition, so for me having wooden ones made was the best option.

Thanks for the up close tour of your kitchen. I got some Waverly wallpaper with some of the same colors for my kitchen back in the 90s. I got it because it had that Fiesta vibe to it. Don't know if I'lll ever hang it. They had some nice stuff back in the day. I got some others that were from their Greenfield Village collection. I'm curious how that corner cabinet under your sink works.

Hi Scooter! I'll bet that Greenfield Village collection of wallpaper is great. The corner cabinet has an interesting door. The carpenter built a center-hinged bi-fold door which is fairly unusual but it works great. Thanks!

Absolutely INCREDIBLE video Kevin! Like many viewers, so many of the items in this kitchen trigger so many memories. The "oil lamp" lights on top of the cabinets stood out to me- I have a small one on my nightstand at home, with a milk glass base. Your cabinets look VERY similar to my best friend's cabinets (his house was built in the mid or late 1940s). Your carpentry team did an excellent job! I always wondered about the windows by the sink- I figured they were decorative, however they certainly give a pleasant and realistic charm. Very clever option! I forget if I've asked before, but the remainder of the "collection" in the studio/the items that are not on set- are these strictly for rotating on and off set, as well as for collecting? Or do you also sell them from time to time as well? Your loved ones are very fortunate to have such a unique venue to gather, enjoy good food, good times, and an incredible amount of nostalgia! Thank you SO MUCH for this tour Kevin. This is now one of my favorite videos on this channel, and I will certainly be re-watching it whenever I feel like it. I will also share and watch it with my best friend, who will certainly love seeing this! Fawn 😊
