Flip Bike is a series where we buy old mountain bikes, fix them up, and sell them for a profit. This video is a look behind the scenes of Flip Bike. From where we get the bikes, to where we get the parts, to how we take the photos, this video explains it all!

I really enjoy this series on your channel. I teach high school Agriscience (most areas call it "Shop") and we have just started restoring bikes as a way to introduce my students to basic mechanics, specialty tools, and even some more in-depth sandblasting and painting basics. The program is still in its infancy, but the kids are really digging it. We plan donate the bikes to programs such as Christmas Angel Tree, Foster Care, local churches that are taking care of families, and even some of our students that we know are in need. I may start including some of the "Flip Bike" series as assignments for them to complete on the days that I have to be out of the classroom.

Flip bike has actually really grown on me. I love the series, all the bikes are less than $1,000 which makes them super upgradable. Hard to get that with a $3,000 or $4,000 mountain bike.

well, technically 3k-4k bikes are extremely upgradeable, the parts just get crazy pricey. but at that point the differences made by the upgrade are less noticeable. the upgrades really do make more of a difference when on a cheaper bike.

I would say that 3000-4000 are even more upgradeable, it's just that at point an upgrade is going to be 200-1600$

Agreed... A 250 dollar wheelset on a entry level hardtail is a good way to rejuvenate the bike, and VERY easy to sell if it's sized smaller for JR mtb racers
@petesmitt
@petesmitt 2 жыл бұрын
I flipped bikes for several years and apart from the brief covid boom, it just wasn't worth the effort; the vast majority of buyers didn't realise or appreciate the difference between my fully serviced and rejuvenated bikes versus the other used bikes on offer that have had zero servicing and need lots of work to be rideable.

The biggest probplem most people have when listing their bikes is that they don't include the size. This is super-frustrating when shopping for a bike, expescially if you need something XL, like me. Sometimes they list the wheel size, which can also be helpful but honestly one of the most important things to list is the frame size. It will save you from having to answer those unnecessary messages. The second problem I see is that they don't take nearly enough photos. You nailed this one. People are visual shoppers so the more photos the better. And for goodness sake, wash the damn bike first!!!! Grat content as always Seth. Thanks,
@MaximRecoil
@MaximRecoil Жыл бұрын
XL? What are you, 7 feet tall? People think they need huge frames because they've looked at a chart or otherwise been told so. I have two mid-1980s BMX bikes, both with 18.5" long top tubes. A chart I just looked up tells me that an 18.5" TT is for riders who are 4' to about 4' 8" tall. I'm 6' 2" tall, barefoot, and I have no problem riding either bike; not even close to being cramped. I have the handlebars on both of them exactly vertically oriented; one of them has a laid-back seat post (because it came that way from the factory) and the other has an ordinary straight seat post. Because the seat tube of the one with the straight seat post has a more rearward angle than the other bike, the seat ends up at about the same distance from the handlebars on both bikes (about 18" from the front tip of the seat to the handlebars' crossbar). When pedaling while sitting down, my knees never get closer than about 8" from the handlebars when riding in a straight line, and if I sit on the seat with my back completely straight and reach for the handlebars, I can't reach them (they are about an inch or two too far away to touch). Average height guys these days, 5' 9, 5' 10', all seem to think they need a 21" or longer TT; it makes no sense at all.

I really love these flipbike episodes. There are many old gems in the used bike market that go way back to one's own childhood when one was staring at those bikes in the shop windows and not having been able to cough up the huge cash. Especially road bikes and very expensive brands. Now today one gets them almost for free or very cheap (that's before Covid and biking for social distancing), but often in poor neglected condition. Fixing them up, put on some modern upgrades and often they turn out like new old stock bikes and are a joy to ride. And selling them for cash for a new bike project is easy because there are so many folks out there who love the good retro stuff. Some bikes are like a Ferrari 308 GTS, old and obsolete. But riding it feels like being in Magnum P.I., being young and energetic again... :)

I actually really appreciate the outlook you have on "Flipping". Most simply buy something cheap then list it for double the price without touching it. You're keeping it true and honest and actually doing a service of giving someone a tail ready bike for less than a new bike would cost, rather than screwing over the buyer for a dollar.

I just wanted to say that all of Berm Peak and especially flip bike has been my motivation to get into mountain biking and that I didn't need to drop $500+ on something brand new for an activity I wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to yet. Your videos have given me an inside view of everything that can go into...well, everything. Funnily enough it wasn't until I watched this that I realized the bike I bought, a Diamondback Response, was the same as one used in an earlier flip bike. Time to watch through that again for some inspiration!

Hey Seth. Amazing videos, high quality and a great series. Flip Bike reminds me a lot of the old BBC show Wheeler Dealers, and it's very cool to not only go for the biggest score, but for the right new owner as well. Due to a high rate of bike theft in Copenhagen I've been buying second hand bikes for years and replacing key parts to get them back into working condition. Have been following for a while now and gotta say that flip bikes has really grown on me, much so about the process about getting stuff done like the painting portions that you later on dedicated a whole video on it and used that newfound knowledge to my advantage on my own bike which helped tremendously. The business end is like an added bonus for me since in my region its not a really searched for hobby other than gravel or road bikes (Im a MTB junky even tho its plains all around me lol) but what gets me hyped about it is that there are some opportunities to buy pretty good bikes, such as you have, and be able to continue fixing them up in any means possible, even if it is just clean them up, greasing them, and adding them back on the current bike. Of course, the advantage of the backing of some MTB companies helps a lot with part bins but keeping a lookout for some nice decent parts from online really helps onto being able to do small upgrades here and there. Definitely love the process you do and a lot more when new challenges arise and bring us along the way in trial and error until you succeed. Keep up the great work you do!

This is definitely one of my favorite things on the channel. "Flip bike" was me as a kid, although I never was clever enough to try to sell them. My father would bring home bikes he'd pulled from the scrap bin near where he worked and I amassed a collection of parts I would then use to cobble together my own "custom" bike or to fix neighborhood friends bikes. Didn't matter that it didn't make any money, it was just good fun wrenching with friends and getting our hands dirty so we could go cruise around.

This is one of my favorite series on KZbin. The past 3 years I was living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, there I did the same thing as you, Seth. I loved buying old bikes like (not really, really old but from 2008 to 20XX al least), repair them and resell them. Doing that gave me a strange love for low-mid mid-high tier bikes. I actually like more staring at that type of bike than a high end one (don't miss understand me, I would love to have a nice full suspension lol). Sadly I had 2 problems that me it impossible to continue with that hobby. First, in Buenos Aires more than the half of the second hand bikes are stollen ones (I had a lot of bad experiences where I got to a place to see the bikes and there had the serial numbers grinded), I got to a point where trying to buy one was dangerous. And second, I move to another part of the country where saldy there isn't much love for bikes. This series remind me of that part of my life, It was incredible, the felling of trying a new bike riding to my home after buying it (yes, I didn't use car, only trains and my legs lol) was something that I fell in love with. Thank you so much for your content.

I appreciate the flap bike series. It encouraged me to rebuild an old hardtail into my winter beater! Giving life to a worn-out bike that sat in the sheld for a few years. Also, if people want to donate parts, look for a bike-specific charity. There is one here in Wisconsin called Rebike Sheboygan. They are a nonprofit that fix up bikes for people in need of an affordable bike. Look around in your area for something similar!

I just want to tell you how important your flip bike series is. On one hand we have companies trying to upsell you stuff you don't really need and on the other plenty good bikes that just need some love are being thrown into garbage. So it is important to show that 10 or even 15 years old bike could still be fun and reliable.

I love the Flip Bike episodes so much that I now find myself reading bike specs in Seth's voice. It's like a cameo voice over in my head. Kinda funny to be honest.

Love the series and the behind the scenes look! Have to disagree though on tire cost. I have some decent Kendas (tubeless ready and all) that I was able to get for $27 for the pair brand new, granted they were on a steep clearance sale, but still, that was mid-2021 when I got them so not super dissimilar to pricing now. Sure good tires on a bike are nice, but you could get some decent tires for cheap, just a matter of watching for those sales and stuff
