Amen on the crimp connectors. I build emergency vehicles for a living and I have never soldered a connection. Some I have used heat shrink over, but never have soldered. Hundreds of vehicles built all crimos and no failures.

A water heater like the Eccotemp L5 will take cold water to hot directly without the inital circulation in the bucket. I always have to set mine to lowest heat with more water flow or it gets too hot, even from cold hose water. I just pull water out of a jerry can, and don't even take it off the bumper most of the time. It is a slightly larger packup than these, but you can use a stronger 50 psi 12v dc RV pump with an RV shower head and get much better pressure. You also then can turn it on from the shower head, pump kicks on, heater kicks on. Then when you shut the shower head off, pump builds pressure in a bout a second and shuts off at 50 psi, and the heater shuts itself off instantly.. so no overheated water when you turn it back on. You use more water when its on (if you want, which is nicer) but you can shut the thing off from the shower tent, so overall you can use less than these things which are just always on unless you have a helper. They have been making little auto on/off water heaters like this for years. I feel like the overland community is back in the stone age with all these pain in the but stove type heaters.

Great video. I recently worked on a dual battery setup for my rig, after doing lots of research and seeing cross sections of various crimp/solder methods, going the crimp route was the clear winner to me.

Surprisingly nice! Really enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to explain the safety warning for kids with the shower heater and for giving your pearls of wisdom on its use. Also, interesting to hear you like the SAE connectors. I've been using them mostly because they were readily available and I was lazy but I thought I was maybe doing a second rate job compared to other connection plugs. I guess I'll just keep on with what I'm doing. Thanks again!

Very interesting video. Good to see how you handle repairs on the trails. To add to the solder/crimp debate I was taught to crimp and solder. It’s important to have a good electrical and mechanical connection. Then I visited a company that preps rally cars and they only ever crimp and have never had a wiring loom failure. The loom often gets transferred to new vehicles. Their stance was solder can make the wires brittle. It’s more important to seal the connection from moisture so I’ve adopted the crimp and use the adhesive heat shrink to seal it. The shower bit was useful too... our solar one tends not to works so well in lower temperatures 🤔

A soldered stranded wire that is not properly supported beyond the the solder end will vibrate on a vehicle and the individual strands break. I have also done thousands of crimpies and I do that most of the time for a vehicle. Air craft will have connectors crimped also only soldered in a device that is mounted solid. We used to wire wrap the important connections for the circuits I worked on in the past. Always keep it clean or the little electrons get lost. Stay safe and healthy, your little one is growing fast, hope she gets her daily hugs, she sure is a happy young lady.

I admitted I was a crimper, and my life had become unsolderable. LOL. Great content, beautiful videography. Nice diag on the noise or rattle problem. I've risked my life hanging off vehicles to find a rattle. Good job and yeah, those washers got left out. LOL. They'll show up under the bench, right side, behind the empty brake clean can, and in front of the old starter.

I use a similar set up for showering. I added a Nemo Helio Pressure shower water container. I pour the hot water in it when it's temperature ready. Use my foot to on pump to create pressure. This way I only use the water when I press the nozzle and I'm not wasting water. Also, don't have the worry about the water suddenly getting too hot and it's easier for a solo person. This is the system they use at Overland expo and I've been using the system ever since. I do like the bamboo mat idea. I will be adding that to my shower gear.

I've been crimping my whole adult life. That being said I do solder for anything that's going to a sensor, computer or because I have too. Just a normal connection like you did is a crimp for me as well. Like the butt connector without the bulky hard plastic outer sleeve. Heat shrink is really the key, keeps the water/corrosion out! So just to be confusing I'm like 85% just crimp it!
@davec.3198
@davec.3198 3 жыл бұрын
I solder, but make sure there is a water tight adhesive filled shrink around it. Never failed. Solder can weaken wires and cause them to get brittle, then they fatigue and break. That is a real risk, so I always try to support the connection in any way possible. But yes...I would never argue that a solder is better than a proper crimp. The key to both is the shrink afterwards.
@Fei8lo
@Fei8lo 3 жыл бұрын
Proper crimp is better than solder. Solder flux leads to wire corrosion. I believe in some aviation applications crimps are required and solder is not allowed.

The Zodi is definitely worth the money. We use it paired with the Nemo Helio shower. Just fill up the Helio and let the Zodi recirculate until it gets warm. Then you have a on/off shower rather than the Zodi continuously running. Helps save some water for everybody...

In case you have ever wondered one can heat water on a stove and dump it into a bucket and repeat until the bucket is at shower temp. With one burner it takes about 10-15 minutes to heat up. 2 burners probably half that. Zodi kits are cool but you really don't need it. Just use the stove and buy a pump and hose and its one whole less device you need to carry.

With your solid rig setup and considerable experience overlanding, is there any specific reason you don't use a tankless water heater attached to your rig? Seems like a pretty common mod for serious overlanders, and seems like would make the shower process much simpler, easier, and faster, which means you could do it more often without so much hassle. Asking to learn more.

Oh laugh, I hope you have a turkey minced and no turkey grilled. In Germany you would be a racist. Oh dear, jokes aside, your cars are very good, but not designed for this kind of stress and the time of stress. I speak from experience, good underbody protection, for all weather conditions and distances, off the road, say it all. For example hydraulic shock absorbers, are less temperature dependent than gas pressure shock absorbers. Another point, the tires, use nitrogen and no compressed air, only to refill when necessary. And above all, solid steel rims. For your purposes, they are much better suited. You can catch up later and bring a lot. Your solar panel, super and huge. Isn't it better if you buffer an additional battery between panel and car battery? So you always have a spare battery for your car. I would always take the maximum cable lengths and solder the connections. Plug connections, or screwed connections, cause a loss of about 20% and this is a disadvantage in your climate situation. Best wishes from Frankfurt and stay healthy.

@@badgerpa9 The tire pressure is correct, but it should not be too low, even off-road. It is always different, everyone has to develop a feeling for himself and the machine and driving style. I prefer to ride with somewhat harder tires, even in mud, I can handle it better. But I make sure that the tread is always good. Stay healthy my friend.
