I read the biography of Duran and I learned some interesting tidbits. Duran was trained by Ray Arcel (common knowledge) but the techniques and methods Arcel taught Duran were pre WW1. (Arcel fighter himself fought and trained pre WW1) . The techniques that Arcel knew had begun to disappear as fighters from that era became less and less from that time on. So, in the seventies, Duran was doing things in the ring that "modern" fighters weren't accustomed to. It's been said and noted from Leonard to Barkley that Duran was crafty and hard to hit though he wasn't a conventional box on your toes type of boxer. Boxing and dancing on your toes wasn't a noted style of fighting pre WW1 until Sugar Ray Robinson came around in the 50's. I'm sure you weren't around before 1918 as I wasn't either but there's a pretty good chance that the style of fighting that Duran brought to the ring was very common for that era before the first world war and Duran had it down. Duran doesn't train fighters; so when he goes that knowledge will be gone forever.

I was a big fan back in the 70s and 80s. As a lightweight and shortly after, "Duranimal" was one of the most skilled and feared fighters in the lighter weight classes. If you weren't around back then you really couldn't fully appreciate how big of a deal it was when this vicious, destructive villian vacated his lightweight title to take on the ultimate good guy, Sugar Ray. I can't remember a non-heavyweight fight getting so much buildup; their first fight was a pretty big deal. I was stationed overseas at the time and it was all everyone was talking about. Too bad Duran had such a strong affinity for food, women, and drink between fights. He ended up being his own worst enemy.

@@cliffmcginnis3231 Agreed, Duran was ignorant of Hearns naturally bigger frame, reach and leverage power as much as his underrated excellent Boxing skills. @Ralph Reilly No, you want to push that nose candy charge on the Brit who beat Duran. Kirkland Laing beat Duran in 1982 and went missing for over 18 months. Top 10 Is highly subjective but some have to be there IMO like Robinson, Louis, Ali, Duran, Pep, and Armstrong, IMO. IMO, P4P: 1. Sugar Ray Robinson welterweight 2. Roberto Duran lightweight 3. Henry Armstrong as a force featherweight to welterweight 4. Ezzard Charles light heavyweight 5. Willie Pep featherweight 6. Joe Louis heavyweight 7. Muhammad Ali heavyweight 8. Sam Langford s a force welterweight to heavyweight 9. Sugar Ray Leonard welterweight 10. Floyd Mayweather JR superfeatherweight 11. Harry Greb welterweight, middleweight, lightheavyweight 12. Benny Leonard lightweight Duran vs DeJesus 3, best Roberto ever was (prime Duran IMO) Saw it on CBS in 1978 long time ago now Saw Duran vs Leonard 1 live on the screen in Madision Square Garden. And Leonard vs Bruce Finch (prime Leonard IMO) though his greatest victory was stopping the young counter/champion in welter division Thomas Hearns in 198.1 saw him stop Hearns at The Meadowlands in Jersey in 1981 lol long time ago now

In Armstrong's time there was only 1 world champ per division, but still nobody ever went from beating the best around at such a light weight (112 pounds) then move up and beat guys like Delahoya at 147, even win the world championshipnat 147. Unheard of before Pacquiao arrived. And George Foeman cetainly deserves a very high ranking even p4p. Losing his world championship to Ali and winning it back more than 20 years later. Unbelievable. Tall, fast strong inside, murderous puncher, throws every punch in the book. Great movement and use of ajab. Threw punches to the body and head in super fast, hard jarring combinations. Boxed 18 legit world champs when there was 1 champ per division and no jr middleweight division. Boxed 10 hall of famers. His list of competition is one of the best in boxing history. He was 131 - 1 - 1 world welterweight champ then middleweight champ at one point in career. The loss was to Lamotta. Jake outweighed Ray by 16 pounds at weigh in! Unheard of today. 144 to 160 pounds. It was a decision and he beat the heavier Lamotta every other time, 5 times including stopping the bigger man. He beat Gavilan at welter koed Fullmer at middleweight. Fullmer was never even knocked down in career until and except when Ray flattened him. All his other losses, except that one to the much heavier Lamotta, came after he retired the first time. The reason the "4 Kings" are so highly respected is they all faced each other, in or near their primes. Duran was older and smaller so he was at a disadvantage, however his multi-faceted skills, smarts, and legendary toughness made him a formidable opponent, which explains how he managed to outlast his rivals by many years. The Brawl in Montreal is still the single most competitive fight in history; two legends in their prime who wanted to beat the living sh*t out of each other. What is even MORE remarkable is that both men walked away unscathed and undamaged. That type of war would retire any mere mortal athlete. They'd both go on to enjoy more victories, more championships, and LOTS more money.

Leonard was a coward! Roberto quit the 2nd fight because he tried to lose too much weight too quickly and his body was hurting. Also, he was getting frustrated because Leonard the coward wouldn't fight him. Leonard was just dancing and prancing around the ring mocking him. Leonard was a coward because he knew he couldn't beat Duran at his best. This is why Leonard wanted a quick rematch and threw a bunch of money in Durans corner. Duran said no, he wasn't ready, and Durans people said yes because of the money. Then, Leonard refused to give Duran the 3rd fight until he thought Duran was past his prime!

Dude went thirty and 0 before he lost a decision he probably should have won. Then rang off forty two more wins straight with knocking out the only guy that beat him at the time erasing that loss and getting a win over sugar ray before his next loss that is insane and he did it in like ten years. 70 some fights in just that span before he got out of his prime that’s like two careers.

4:29 I like how Leonard acknowledges there are great fighters today Canelo certainly comes to mind And a couple of years ago Mayweather and Pacquiao were giants. Marquez and Golovkin too (thinking of Welter-Middles) All great all time fighters. May and Pac could both have a claim to being in the top P4P of all time Too often we hear sweeping dismissals of 'todays fighters' which of course is nonsense because a generation from now people will say this was a better generation etc

These "cats" still look pretty good(especiallyRay), I don't know when this was flimed but it couldn't have been to long ago. In my opinion.these two guys are the epitome of ruggedness, and toughness. Neither one of them appears to be experiencing any of the neurological symptoms that sometimes besets boxers when they retire from the squared circle. Boxing is a rough and tumble "sport" and on any given night you could lose your life. So to have been involved in the amount of hard core do or die fights like these two guys have been involved in. Is a testament to their guts and grit. Boxing is a hard ass hustle so my "hat" comes off in reverance for these two seemingly unscathed warriors. And hopefully generational millennials until the end of times will be able to as I did as a young man(17). Watch the three awe-inspiring fights these two participated in ( at least one, and two was). And enjoy them from beginning until number two's controversial climatic end.

The lost to Duran was the best OJT maybe in history. Duran was the most skilled savage in history. His inside pressure and expertise was unparalleled. Although Ray used more movement in the rematch, watch the times they fought on the inside. He clinched better and the uppercuts were effective.
