Behold! The Mongoose Dolomite Fat Bike

It's hard for me to complain about the Mongoose Dolomite, since it's a sub $200 fat bike. No, it doesn’t shift nicely, and yes, it has one of those terrible seat clamps with the bolts on the sides. It’s precisely compromises like these that make super cheap bikes possible. So with that understanding, I'll give an overview of this bike's strong and weak points.
First of all the paint job is impressive. Even the rims have a nice red powder coat on them, which does a pretty good job of hiding this huge weld. The saddle is also quite comfortable.
The rear derailleur is from Shimano's Tourney group set, which is suspiciously absent from their website. Although I see it available for $6 on the internet, I think it might be the most expensive part on this entire drivetrain.
Speaking of drivetrains, I've gotta give credit to Mongoose for setting this up with a 1x. This makes the bike much cleaner and more mechanically sound. With that said, I think they should have chosen a smaller chainring for the front. At 47 pounds, this thing is pretty hard to pedal on flat, let alone on sand or up hill. I will say though that it's lighter than my last bike by a full pound-of course on that bike I packed the components with sand and pumped the tires full of water.
The disc brakes suck terribly, but surprisingly they are totally adjustable like normal ones. Most department store bikes are built in some proprietary way that makes them difficult or impossible to service. This bike breaks that trend to some extent. That makes me wonder if a better set of pads would improve the stopping power. For now, all I need to do is stop pedaling and the bike comes to standstill pretty fast.
I was especially happy to see a threadless headset. Compared to a threaded headset and quill stem, this feels incredibly solid, and dare I say-safe. I expect this headset to hold up much better than my last one, and I also expect the alignment to stay put.
I have ridden quite a few fat tire bikes, and they were generally heavy and sluggish compared to their skinny counterparts. Still, I was always pleasantly surprised at how well they handled for their size. Not this bike. Sure, if you pump the tires to 20PSI it rolls and steers well, but it’s then useless on sand or chattery terrain. Reduce the pressure to 10 PSI, like a real fat bike, and its off-road performance does improve. Unfortunately, this makes the bike extremely difficult to control, as the steering pulls whichever way you’re turning. I think this is due to the cheap tires, which are pretty thick and shaped oddly. I also think wider bars and a shorter stem would make this bike easier to manage.
If you have this bike and want to give it an upgrade, I might recommend that shorter stem paired with cheap set of 760mm bars.
Even after these shortcomings, I firmly believe this Mongoose Dolomite is a marvel of engineering. Like I said, everything on this is a compromise, designed to keep it below $200. As a society we asked for a cheap fat bike, and here it is. It may seem like certain things could have been made better for the same price though. For instance, would a smaller chainring in the front have changed the price? Well, maybe. You see these bikes benefit from economies of scale, or using parts that can be produced in mass quantity. So, it could have been that this very popular crankset/chainring combination was actually the cheapest route. This scenario is very likely, and is probably the case for many other parts on this bike. So, we don’t really have the right to nitpick the gear ratio.
So now for the real question; why did I buy this bike? Why not a nice fat bike? Well, I have some plans which I wouldn’t have the heart to carry out on a bike like that. If you’ve been following my videos, you could probably guess that the Dolomite is gonna have a rough week.

Makshar Israel Potentially the answer is yes, because there is more weight to be spun by pedalling, but also, I reckon that in some downhill situations the fat tire could be faster. Particularly if the terrain is very rough as those tires are about the same width as the front tire on a trials motorcycle..

The problem is that a wider tire will always create more resistance via friction, even with increased air pressure because the contact patch is bigger. But I think these fat tire bikes are going to become very popular in urban situations. I definitely want one! B¬)

I think it depends on your mechanical skill and what parts you already have left over or laying around . and a lot of the bike snobs are just insane. .there like shoe snobs. I have a mongoose hitch..I got the shimano mega 34 tooth 7 speed freewheel for 15.00 a hollow crank 36/22 crank off of a specelized fat boy for 29.00. I had a aerus aluminum set back seatpost in the parts bin . paid 3.99 for a shim to fit . bought a pro master 35 degree riser stem had some leftover aluminum bars . had a brand new 9 speed shimano lx 9 speed rear derailleur , had an lx 3 speed front shifter and bought an lx direct mount front derailleur for 8.00 .and had some road bb5s. snd one avid 160 rotor for front. . stripped off all the mongoose badging and got a vintage reproduction redline head tube decal.. will use the heavy stock tires for now but I don't have much money in this bike and rides great I like it still using the stock shifter works pretty good with the lx rear. so if you have some parts it might make a good fun bike..

I was looking at these for a daily driver. I had a Specialized Sirrus Hybrid, which was great for asphalt trails, toodling around on paved streets. But my daily ride to work takes me through crushed lime rail trails, mud, sand, and crater-filled side streets. So instead of getting the Dolomite or the HItch, I opted for the Gravity Bullseye Monster from Bikes Direct. So far it seems like a pretty solid bike, but I have a feeling like my hybrid, I'll part ways with it and just get the Surly Long Haul Disk Trucker with 26" mountain bike tires at that point.

That derailer is going to become part of the rear wheel very, VERY soon :) I had a tourney on the front, I don't know how is it possible to fuck up a front derailer but, well, the tourney did it. On the rear? I think I'd rather go single speed that lug that piece of crap around :D

I've been riding a Tourney RD for almost a year (using friction shifters) and to be honest, it does work very well considering how cheap it is. And my FD is something like that as well, and again, I've yet to have a problem with it.

The friction shifters make all the difference. Pretty much any derailleur will shift alright with friction since you can trim it. The Tourney certainly does not index well

Tourney came on my jamis trail x. I bought the cheap version so I could upgrade as needed or wanted. Gotta say it shifts like total shit but it's held up to many jumps and crashes over a year and a half.

My God Seth! I don't have the $300-$500 laying around to buy a nice bike that I can keep and love forever. The only thing I can afford is either a department store bike or a piece of junk from the swap meet that's $45-$100. What I'm getting at is what in the hell do I do to ensure I can get a good bike for my budget! Mine is a Roadmaster that I got from the swap meet for $60 and I need help and advice because I can't afford a nice one. I'm down on my luck.

+Lauren Peralta Keep your eyes out for a used name brand bike! Sometimes you can find a good deal. Look for things like bolts (no rivets) and quick release skewers (instead of nuts). These are the things that make it easier to service and upgrade a bike. If you can do that, your options are limitless! Go the full Walmart route, and you'll be stuck with repairs that cost as much as the bike.

How can u say that seat clamp is terrible on my one grand bike I have that kind of clamp and its good cuz u can higher or lower the saddle fast and easy with out tools required! Btw I have also a roadbike with regular screws and it's a hell to stop and rise or lower it some where else than home and I don't always evn have a toolkit with me when I am riding.

I bought two nice mountain bikes under 500. Both bikes have disk brakes and good full suspension. However, I live in a area with a lot of mountain biking, so there is a big market for used bikes. Join local buy sell pages on Facebook. I bough two bikes off a local buy sell page. One was only 150 and the other was 400.

Seems nice, I reckon you should upgrade the bike a bit though, for example for another 100-200 bucks. That would still be relativley cheap for a fatbike and see what can a bike like this achive with a few "better" parts.

The only problem is that the bike comes with a freewheel, so to really do any meaningful upgrades I'd need to spend a lot of money on a good fatbike cassette hub, then a cassette, and then a whole new drivetrain. So, I'd be much better off starting with something SLIGHTLY nicer that already comes with a cassette. If it weren't for this costly consideration I'd say it would be worth tweaking.

I bought a Mongoose 21spd mountain bike in 90'. It retailed for like $475-$500. I think it was Korean. It was a very solid bike, but had already lost its image as an aftermarket badboy that it was in the 1970's.

It looks like that is the exact same crank on my daughter's 20" mongoose mountain bike, plastic bash guard and all. So your mass production theory is spot on. 48 lbs! I thought.. would helium in the tires help to lighten that beast up?? Then I remebered when nitrogen in car tires became popular and I had access to it through my work, how much handling and road feel improved in my vehicles. Maybe some nitrogen filled tires would help handling on the dolomite. Thanks for churning out the vids dude. I got all giddy thinking of what is to come... rising up from the murky depths!

please do a video on the different style rear suspension....like a vertical vs a horizontal rear shock....i cant figure out the differences between the 2

They are actually completely different. For example vertical gives you a straighter travel of the rear wheel so a more xc style. On the other hand the horizontal is better for DH because it has more leverage going downhill and more responsive while breaking but it sucks to pedal on it. So the horizontal =sucky pedal platform but great responsiveness. Vertical= amazing pedal platform and not very responsive (doesn't move through travel as easy as horizontal). But it's all about your style of riding so if you are looking into one of these bikes go to your LBS and demo both styles. Good luck out there!

Seth's Bike Hacks I have a schwinn Biggity fat tire bike which is very simaliar to this one. I have ridden at dirt parks with mine and the rims did hold up well surprisingly. I upgraded the handlebars to 750mm bontraeger elite bars and stem, lever shifter, shimano deore derailleur, steel pedals and hydraulic disc brakes. I think if anyone does those simaliar upgrades to an inexpensive fat tire bike. It's great for someone who wants fat tires but are on a budget

A Drone I have a mongoose malus, w/ street tires(3" Duro Beach Bum's), MegaRange Freewheel, Shimano brake shifter lever, KMC X 8.9 3 chain, front & rear lights, luggage rack, bottle holder w/ stainless steel bottle, small aluminum air pump, phone tank bag, mirrors, bell, mini BMX bars, grips and a soft seat. I have under $500 in the whole thing new. I ride around the city at night, I've had the bike 2years with 1200 miles on it. It's still like New. I'm 43 & biked my whole life, this is my favorite bike, although I did peel all the mongoose decals off (I say its a Pacific Cycle)

However do let me make it clear I have 6 bikes mine include 1 Mongoose Fat bike, 2 Genesis 29er s , 1 Speaciazed Roll Elite , 1 Trek Fx 4", and 1 Diamondback Edgewood One of my 29er s was purchased from Walmart in 2011 and now has over 700 trouble free miles on it and is still going strong (just rode it earlier today) and looks brand new kept in my bike room at my house. It also depends on how you care and take care of them.... Other toys I have include my Honda Rancher 420 , Honda Recon 250 and an EZ Go golf cart all garage kept and well taken care of as well ... So be careful before you spit ...You never know what kind toys the next guy has!!! Good day mate!!!

Converted this bike to dual wheel 1000w x2. The frame has help up great under about a 300lb load so far(about 3 years). Me, batteries, heavy hub motors. Its the best thing since sliced bread. :)

I swapped out a 34 tooth freewheel and added a 30 tooth chainwheel alongside the 36 tooth. It's working well. I can physically move it back to the 36 when I add a hub motor. I got the new black and blue Dolomite. Added comfy seat and cruiser handlebars, new pedals, trigger shifter, foam grips, bell, mirror, rear rack, front basket, phone cam holder, speedometer, lights. I want to fabricate double rear baskets that mount to the rack with a quick release.

these bikes are great quality.. i have the mongoose brutus fat bike, bought it 5 years ago and its still like new. its really hard pedaling against the wind. department stores arent even selling these fat tire bikes anymore in my area.

I got the malus its the same but grey. I love it, I made the full switch to fat bikes and I will never be going back. I plan on ordering a Motobeane Boris X9 within the next few weeks.

Also side note I switched to a tx55 derailer the stock is a 35 is believe. I also got two sets of resin break pads from amazon the breaks pads stock are full metal and wore really quick so they screech and scream at every slight tug on the breaks. I also got a set of origin 8 levers left and right because i was on trails with it and landed face first into a fucked up day and ruined the left break lever. all 3 of these upgrades together make the bike so much more enjoyable and costed around 50$. I run 20 psi and at this point im use to the weight and can sorta kinda keep up with traffic when I commute.

Had a customer that had one of these for 8 months. Worked on his bottom bracket every 2 weeks. He was a paper boy, and when we got him on something new we didn't see him for 3 months. The wheels on this bike are super heavy and are not cut out like most fat tire bikes. Could probably use a smaller chain ringer. Tourney is okay for this price point. I'd probably get some different brakes and maybe something with a larger rotor to increase stopping power. Wheel upgrade may help with control issues as turning a wheel that weighs 5 lbs more than another makes a huge impact.

I pumped my tires to the max 20 psi and as long as the wind isnt blowing towards me it just keeps rolling with barley any effort.

Good video and review of the bike. I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago from Walmart for $185. Wanted to try a fatbike but a decent one goes for TEN TIMES what the Dolomite costs. So far I have spent probably 10 hours lubing it properly, replacing the parts that were damaged in shipping (Pacific Cycle replaced them no charge) and upgrading it with bits from my old mountain bike. It kind of sucked before the upgraded derailleur, click shifter, bars, grips, seat, and brake levers. I added a 22 tooth chainring inside the stock 36 tooth and with a Shimano Megarange freewheel it climbs pretty well for a 50lb bike. If I really get into fat bikes I will buy a nice one but for now I'm pretty happy with the modded Dolomite.
