Thanks for the comparisons. I got tired of VSTi, wavs, samples, etc.. I've used such programs since the early 1990's starting with Cakewalk and working my way up to Reason, Atmosphere, ACID PRO and most of the modern DAWs like LIVE. All the while I yearned for REAL instruments not just a controller. But I stayed with VSTi because it was easy and not challenging. I bought the DM 12 two months ago, but I didn't buy it because I wanted a 'Juno whatever' I just wanted a great sounding analogue poly synth with equally great potential and the price fit my budget! I'm just learning how to use it and tweak it and so far I'm more than impressed. Also it's heavy and built like a tank. BTW, anybody with a biased opinion of Behringer or of the DM 12 or just foolishly thinks an emulation (VSTi) sounds better needs their ears checked and/or listen with better speakers! The DM 12, I predict, will be a classic just like its vintage cousins!
@scottcupp81293 жыл бұрын
I agree. I mostly use VST instruments but I bought a DM12 about a year ago. I absolutely love it. I have a few other synths too. I have a Behringer Model D, a Novation Mini Nova, and an Ensoniq SQ1 +. My very FIRST real synth as a kid was a Concertmate MG-1. Following that relatively closely, my parents bought me a Korg Poly 61. Out of all of the analog and digital synths I have had, I've got to say that the DM12 is my favorite followed closely by the SQ1+ I regret selling a few of my synths that I have had in the past but am slowly building my collection back up. As far as VSTi's, have you ever used G-Force impOSCAR2? it's a great sounding synth.

Agreed. I owned a Juno 106 in the 90s, it sounded extremely bright. More like the Deepmind. The Juno 60 though is slightly different, I played one once and thought it sounded a lot better, BUT the Juno 106's thinness and bright sound cut through a mix like a razor blade, never needed any EQ!

@Deeplycloseted4356 жыл бұрын
Bass4bassist1 yeah....the way you can change the voicing structure is so key, and something even the Rev2 lacks. Being able to play 4 voice polyphony with the oscillators tripled is key. I just assumed the 16 voice Rev 2 could do it too, but no. Its 16 voices, split how you want, or 16 voice unison. Big mistake. Detuning 8 saw wave oscillators and playing big plucked chords would have been enticing to the modern electronic crowd. Deepmind gets it done.

Reliability-Juno. Providing it is a nice condition example. The Juno 60 is super reliable. They have DCOs, and generally never break. As long as it is not a beat to hell one. Mine , along with the DX7 has never had an issue.
@baaaaaah25035 жыл бұрын
Bass4bassist1 lol you're missing the point. The best sounding Juno is a Juno. If you're low on cash, the Juno isn't for you. If you want a "good enough" Juno sound with tons of other sonic possibilities in the same synth, the Juno is not for you. If you want that unbeatable warmth, punch and chorus because THAT'S the sound that inspires you, a Juno is for you. I use the 60 and 106 JUST for pads because that's the sound I want and I can afford it and I don't care about midi connectivity, warranties, voices etc. I also have a deepmind 12 which doubles as a midi controller and sounds great doing its own thing. Long-winded way of saying that extra authenticity comes at a premium; it's up to you (and your wallet) to decide if it's worth it 😉 but let's not pretend the DM can replace a 60 when money is no object...
@synthartist695 жыл бұрын

In like for like comparisons, I have to agree that the Juno sounds better by miles (I have my bias because the Juno 60/106 are my favorite synths), but I do have to say, when I played the Deepmind12, it really shines when you start doubling voices and using the oscillator drift. The types of sounds possible are just really remarkable...! My favorite thing was quadrupling the voices, so you have 3 HUGE voices, with oscillator drift, PWM, and spread.... and you add the Dimension D + some reverb. There's just nothing that sounds so full and powerful. Like for like, on similar settings, the Juno will always win. But there's a lot going on in the DM12 worth paying attention to.

BS...i owned a Juno for years. The DeepMind is great maybe not exact, but great. The point is not to sound exactly like a Juno but to sound very analog and give you a lot of flexibility. For the price point this synth is the best on the market right now.
@networkservices31216 жыл бұрын
Kinda late again, but the differences between analog then and today is input voltage. In yesteryear the input voltage and subsequent soldiering and wire length and all that went into crafting unique personalities of each analog synth. Two junos would not sound identical, they each had their own respective flavors. The downside is it is effected by everything humidity temperature has the device warmed up, tuning was hopeful at best and many timed the filter when pushed to hard would become unstable. This in many cases was a good thing, but could cause unintended outcomes most particularly when live. It was and is the nature of vintage analog. Modern anaolg have a wave that is produced not by direct stimulation of electrical input. The upside being two system could share the same program data and sound identical, DCO vs VCO. how many times does a VCO drift. Well constantly is the only answer. DCO are controlled to remain tuned and proper. But the subtraction of those variances removed the depth and warmth and overall essence of true analog. But left us with a reliable system that sounds good, but not true VCO analog Nor does it have all the downsides either. So true analog is only for those with extreme discerning taste and require alot of micro adjustments just to stay true. DCO allows for stable operation but removes some aspect of the organic sound. But evens out the constant upkeep. It is really just trading one set of issue for perhaps a more manageable set of issues. Either way, both are important. And honestly do we want anything other than a juno sounding like a juno.? I guess my point is the DM 12 is great synth for its price. The Juno is an excellent synth that has stood the test of time. I dont think the DM12 will be a collectors item in 25 years, but then again i said the same thing about my JD 800.

It's overall just brighter sounding, like a dx7 mk2 vs original. The clarity is nice but I prefer it softer. Keep that for the ms20 lol. Id take the dm over the juno though, even though its a beautiful piece of history and to look at, the dm12 will crush it in versatility. In the mix is what matters. But yea Chorus emulations are usually awful. Clone theory( noise gate the his is terrible especially when the edge switch is on.Oh and that roland chorus FTW, So hard not to use it
@bernios34462 жыл бұрын
Both sound a bit different, nothing dramatic, and in a blind test many would not be sure which one sounds "better". Behringer made a Boss Dimension C clone (touted as a similar sound), which goes for silly prices since they discontinued it, but it had issues which made it less than ideal for use with a synth. The actual Boss one goes for sillier prices, naturally. More recently, TC Electronics (now owned by the same company as Behringer) made the 3rd Dimension - but it's only mono, so not even two dimensions :) Those are now very cheap, mostly because they had to discount them, and presumably intend to discontinue them. There is, allegedly, a Behringer Juno chorus clone in the pipeline. A very large and clunky looking one has been shown, but not demoed, AFAIK, so at this point it may well just be an empty box. There's no reason why they couldn't do it though, so hopefully they will... I'd still rather it was a sensible size, not made big and heavy to look more expensive.

if it said roland on the back of the deepmind you would all be praising it to hell. l have owned a juno 60 years ago and progressively moved with the times for synths i could gig with easily. yes the deepmind sort of resembles the juno but dont you think Behringer have put their own development into the deepmind which will make it differ. i dont think its worth direct comparing unless its an exact replica of the juno which it is not. again i have read all over the reviews a good mixed bag but brand snobbery is clearly apparent. lets face it Behringer are turning out synths at fraction of the price of main stream brands which spund pretty much just as good. so like all the hardened korg fans like myself and all the other main brands, there is a new player which i hope will bring the price down to a more affordable level. i have just ordered the 12d for my studio and i think it sounds ace.

Fact is, the DM started out as a clone...which is why people compare it. They want the classic sound....so it's self explanatory. Behringer's game is low price leader. It clearly fills a need in the market. But if I'm after the Juno sound, personally I wouldn't settle for a DM because to me, to my ears, its just not close enough. But that's just how this particular DCO product came out. Now if nailing the Juno sound wasn't mandatory, and I wanted a more versatile version of the Juno, I might go for this- and be satisfied for the money I paid for it. One doesn't have to win over the other, it's simply a matter of what satisfies you.

It's funny how one KZbinr shows them being very different, but another shows them nailing each-other's sound 90% of the time (where features overlap). I notice the "Boost" isn't engaged, which is supposed to make the Deepmind deeper and darker like the Roland.
@bcroson825 жыл бұрын
Not to be pedantic about this, but it appears that the bass boost is on for every Juno demo and off for nearly every (maybe every?) Deepmind demo. That kind of ruins the comparison when one is boosted while the other is not...

It is obvious Synthlegends that you are biased in this comparison. Everything is spelled out in your video description. Your intention of this video, is to make the "Juno 60 sound" unattainable by the Deepmind. Up to 3:25 the raw sounds are pretty close. After that you turn on the Juno analog bbd chorus and compare it to the behringer digital chorus. Which is like comparing a analog synth to a digital one. I believe without the chorus you can make extremely close sounds. Again I think the differences in the video were the chorus and different envelope and resonance settings. The Deepmind has a inverted envelope. I think it is lame that you might be hurting Deepmind sales with this propaganda. This video is a disservice to the synth community. Remember there are new synth musicians watching this video, getting the impression that you have to buy a vintage roland to get a classic synth sound. Which is false now, thanks to Behringer. I have no affiliation with behringer. I have owned a Juno 106 and jx8p.
@vintagesynths6 жыл бұрын
qphonix I have no attention to mislead the community’ and I tried to make an objective demonstration. I only tell my opinion in the end and explain, that three deepmind has also his strengths. But not only bebaute of the Chorus, I prefer the Juno sound. The filter is smoother IMO. It’s my personal opinion and everybody can decide what is better. I am not a salesman for vintage synths an have nothing against Behringer instruments. This comparison is a lot of work and a lot of people are happy that they can compare kn objective manner. I know that the dm has an inverted envelope. I also build that sound, but it sounded awful. Somebody in the community tried it out and the result was nice but not convincing at all. You could be right, that using a outboard Chorus like Boss CE-2 Waza Craft, you can match the Juno sound better. I also have another video, where I show the community how to Programm the DM like a Jupiter 8.
@WaveRiderMusic6 жыл бұрын
I also think that test was biaised in favor of the vintage, it is visible that he does not dial in settings for real on the DM. Comparing the chorus to any other vintage would lead to same results :) the juno chorus was 1 of a kind. :) Anyway if you get down on the DM for real it can makes sounds the juno can't touch... I agree that in this video the juno has a better basic tone but in the arp test for exemple he did not provide a fair comparison, as the DM is not dialed well.

First of all, juno has got better live filters. D12 don't have that slow swirl and more flat unfortunately. Yes, roland has got a bit of high roll off, but in my opinion it sounds fuller even with the sound card author have. I've tried to record some hardware units on modified sound unit with better clock and impulse response OP's and hardware sounds more fuller, better, crispier attacks than it's software analogs. Of course it doesn't make sense if you are using sound cards like m-audio or same level card. You need Clock/OP/cleanup upgrade to your sound card to get all the benefits from the hardware synths or you get something like spectrasonics trilian, without any advances. Also hardware units has got more depth and better reverb space.

In a nutshell: you cant reinvent the wheel, saw square and even the Filters sounds really really good at the plugins. But if you start to play you hear the perfect imperfectness, that you cant emulate. The "alot" you really hear in the mix, in the context to your track.
@snuppssynthchannel6 жыл бұрын
I dont think i agree With you there, the deepmind sounds great in real life, its sound is quite in Your face and punchy, no plug has that nearness. However i must say that there is a couple of virtual analogs that sounds warmer and lusher, the Yamaha An1x for instance.

Sonically, Behringer has more dynamic range than the Roland. You can hear it on the filter test and the PWM. Juno 60, on the other hand, tries to keep things clear, where Deepmind 12 fails to do so, by pushing too much and of course, at some point, you get artifacts. In the middle octaves, amazingly, they sound almost the same. But on the low-end and the high-end, Juno wins again because it doesn't try too much. Anyway, thanks for doing this test, thanks for sharing and I've become very interested in the DeepMind 12. I'm very curious about the built quality, though, that is my main concern. I'm looking for something good for performances and new as well, preferably to be analogue and without keybeds that get broken easily or wobbly knobs or faders.
@vintagesynths7 жыл бұрын
Mihai Niță thanks for your comment. The built quality is not good in my opinion. The end checks weren’t fixed, the keyboard is not good, the faders are knobling. I sold it quickly. Now I purchased a JP8000 for 430€. I like it much more. It’s not analog, but sounds amazing and built quality is ok. The Juno is built like a tank.
