So when my 6 comes on Monday I have to shell out another £71 import duty, and £11 courier fees... Thats what you get for voting out of Europe people... yup. I was trying to convince someone who was opting for the minilogue xd over deepmind 12 that they'd never get the same pads but they wouldn't listen convinced that they would just multi-track them. minilogue (xd) is a great synth, but there are a ton on monos and even four voice polys. Never mind that you really need a minimum of 5 note poly to do anything approaching complex chords, you need at least double that to avoid note stealing. I could do with a 10 voice, but 12 voice gives some wiggle room at add another note and avoid note stealing. and, if you go for a note-heavy 7 note chord, when you move to next chord the note stealing is there, but harder to notice, so you CAN get away with 7-note chords. there is nothing analog like the 12(D) at that price point.
@Studio-solutions-com2 жыл бұрын
100% Alex, you hit the nail on the head...! There's no real competition for the Deepmind in that price band at all..
@nads59072 жыл бұрын
Depends what you're trying to do. If you're putting in pads in a modern pop track, the XD will sit in the mix perfectly. On the other hand people have had some serious issues getting the DM12 to sit well in a similar mix. But if you're looking for an 80s sound that stands out in a mix, or for something sound design-ey that fits into a film score, the DM12 is a good choice. Horses for courses.
@alexwestconsulting2 жыл бұрын
@@nads5907 “sit in the mix” is just a matter of eq most times. And a 12 voice is intrinsically going to sit differently than a 4 voice, taking up more bands by its very nature, with people having limited experience sitting a 12 voice, and so naturally having more difficulty with it. That’s my direct experience owning both a DM12D and Minilogue OG. But yes, agreed , both Minilogues sound more “modern” and the D12 sounds more “vintage”. Having said that, your assertion doesn’t counter the note stealing issue of a 4 voice which isn’t simply a different strokes problem.
@nads59072 жыл бұрын
@@alexwestconsulting Thanks for your feedback. All very interesting and much appreciated. Well, I suppose you can't solve the XD voice problem in a live context, but you can stack voices in your DAW if you're looking for a bigger sound. A question for you. DeepMind 12 or 6? After all the Deep Mind is based on the Juno 106, which seems to have done rather a good job with 6 voices. In other words, are we being greedy for more voices, or is there really something to be gained from the 12? Penny for your thoughts.
@alexwestconsulting2 жыл бұрын
@@nads5907 So yes, first thing, if you are ok working with a 4 voice in daw you can multitrack your pads to solve much of the note stealing, but are you really going to? And a 4 voice is still going to give you more grief than you'd like if your pads have any movement/note flourishes or you use complex chords, especially if you also have a bass note (or 2). I'd say that that most people who buy outboard gear are wanting to play "live", even if this only means running the entire sequence in your studio to yourself. Daw tricks can save a production, but they are also a drag. My experience (and the video uploaders) is that moving from a 4 voice to 6 voice and finally to 12 voice is a eureka moment where all the headaches go away. 12 is just the magic number really. 6 was OG and they seemed to get by, but did they really? The new Juno-X is 256 note poly, and I've seen countless demos where they really max out the poly, way beyond 6. I maintain that 6 was always limiting, just that people accepted it for what it was, though at least they could do some complex chords, not possible on a 4 voice. I really do think that 12 voice is the min so you can do complex chords and not worry so much about note stealing in transitions. Having said that, my next synth is going to be a 5 note poly Take 5, so i'm not dead set against limited polyphony, but that's also because I have at least on synth in my arsenal that can cover more demanding poly tasks when needed.

I bought a secondhand Deepmind 12 a couple of days ago and it seems that I have to raise the filter cutoff frequency for most of the preset patches before they sound as you would expect them to. @sidefish83622 жыл бұрын
@@Studio-solutions-com There is nothing wrong with the synth. The problem is that the default state of many of the factory patches is with the filter cutoff set at zero so you can't really get any idea of how the patch is supposed to sound until you open up the filter. This becomes a problem when you want to save a patch that you've created and are looking for a slot to overwrite because when you use the compare function you hear the destination patch in its default state (which is often with filter closed) and the compare function won't allow you to adjust the cutoff to hear if it's a sound worth keeping. I suppose you could go through every patch and save them all in an open-filter state but it's a bit of a pain in the arse.
