Guys guys guys. “Begs the question” ISN’T about a question. It’s about a flawed argument. Normal arguments go: A and B therefore C, where you’re using A and B to prove C is true. But when you “beg the question”, you’re saying A and B therefore C, where A and B are already ASSUMING C is true. In which case, you’re not arguing or proving anything. You’re going in circles. You’re “begging” your own “question.” The point is 99.9% of people who use “beg the question” are using it wrong. It really should only be used in philosophy or logic papers. What people are really trying to say is “raises the question”, but “beg the question” is so misused that we think it has the same meaning. Conclusion: never use “beg the question” because more likely than not you’re using it wrong. Love the pod and I’m happy to see getting my philosophy degree was of some use.
