Racism takes on a different depth of meaning depending on whether the particular culture practiced Slavery and Colonial occupation Germany has done much less of this compared with day Britain ,US, France , Holland, Belgium etc
@xornxenophon3652

Nearly every culture practiced slavery and colonization (and even genocide) at one point of their history or another. Greece did, Rome did, Egypt did, Assyria did, Sumeria did, the Ottoman Empire and many islamic nations did so and countless other did it too. Even almost all African cultures practiced slavery! Colonization of Afrika by European powers lasted less than one century (approximately from 1860 to 1960). So this it is but a footnote in history when compared to 8.000 years of history! In 100 years, people most likely will not know or care more about this than they know or care about Napoleon or the ancient Romans.

I don`t get it though. Why do people make these being black in Germany videos? I never see a being black in the UK or a being black in America or a being black in France video. Is it because people subconciously still assume Germans must be racist Nazis? And I can`t imagine being black in Germany is very different from being black in other Western countries though. Except from small towns, people are quite used to seeing black people everywhere in Western-Europe.

Well, my experience is different. I see lots of people in TV and the entertainment industry that look "rather exotic". In my workplace (law firm), a third of my colleagues are turkish, italian, afghan and so on. You cannot expect to see lots of black people in offices if there is but 1 percent of black people in Germany - many of whom are immigrants.

Xorn Xenophon 😆 alone that reply says a lot! I rest my case ! Wow! Am sure the Turkish people who don’t have jobs or Appartement s despite their exceptional qualifications and make whole documentaries about it are nuts. And congratulations to your firm for having white exotic Italians in their law firm. Great! You might be a great person yourself and might assume everyone else is but that’s not true. There is racism out here. And everywhere else’s in the world. We need to fight that and not try to sweep it under the carpet because we are ashamed of it or haven’t experienced it. Have a great day and congratulations on winning the game yesterday 🍾🥂🙌🏽

+sheniqua brown But I think he's got a point. Obama, for example, is usually considered as African-American, although he's just as white as he is black. It's all about perception (and pigeonholing based on said perception).

+Björnar Dohm Well, in the US they base(d) their ethnicity on the "one drop (of black blood)" criteria, with absolutely absurd results. But I think we tend to follow the predominant ethnic features (for, black, white/caucasian, middle eastern, indian, asian and latino) and get confused when it is absolutely unclear. Nevertheless we should focuss much more on culture, because that is what really defines us as a person. I think it is a bad thing for black men in general that so many copy the Afro-American rapper-from-the-projects-look for all the stereotypes it is connected with.
