He was cocky, good looking , excellent at live TV, and years ahead of his time .For a brief time his luck ran full throttle before hubris got him. 17 million viewers for Dee Time a massive audience whereas Jonofan Woss got 2.5 m.

1967 there were just THREE television stations, in fact BBC 2 was not widely available so TWO full stations available. Not much choice. In 2021 there is over 500 stations, on demand, streaming, KZbin etc. You can not compare 1967 audience ratings to 2021 audience ratings.

@@johnking5174 Jonathan Ross, Allan Carr back in 1967 They would nt last Bill Cotton would have fired the lot if them. Put Simon Dee on instead if Jonathan Ross. You would have s great show. Parky was all right Simon was ahead of his time. How much does Jonathan Ross make a week 5k ?

@@yes2truth I m not sure if the Cottons would have liked wosser. Allan Carr I do nt think they would have approved of his style. What about Graham Norton? We could spend time analising, comparing and contrasting.. For me Parky was all right.and Russell Harty was nt bad.

@@yes2truth Well there was a bit of back stabbing and jealousy going on. Dee was nt the kind of person who said yes sir no sir 3 bags full sir. Dee was bigger than Wosser,Terry Wogan, Graham Norton with that silly laugh, pulling in 17 mill viewers. The story goes that he would nt interview somebody on his show. Then he had to appear in court you can google to find out why, but Bill Cotton was on the bench so that was the beginning of the end. So in the light of that I would say yes the Cottons were responsible for Dee's ousting or easing out, if you will.

Shame he got caught up in his own celebrity, but he was definitely the best of his day.

This man has a certain undisguisable honesty about him, Clearly not the type to be handed a long term media career.

Bill Cotton, the controller of BBC One hated Simon, all because of Simon's arrogance and ego. Simon came thundering into Bill's office in 1969 and demanded a huge salary rise, to match what London Weekend Television were offering him. Bill felt Simon was not worth the money and let him go in December 1969, a bad move by Simon whose TV career imploded within a year. BBC were paying him £250 an episode, whereas LWT offered £1,000 an episode. Bill was willing to double his salary to £500 an episode, but Simon was having none of that, and left.

@@xenu-dark-tony This was recorded in 1967, and I believe this was Bernard Braden, who moved to the BBC in 1967, and this could have been one of his first BBC productions as he is interviewing Radio 1 DJs, including Pete Murray whose clip is also on KZbin.

@@johnking5174 Thank you John. I remember 'Braden's Week' as being a forerunner to Esther Rancid's That's Life show. I recall being a very confused child when I heard my mum tell my dad that Bernie's wife Barbara Kelly had said her marriage was very happy and she only had to bend over the bathtub to test the water and she got pregnant. Nowadays they could say that on Jackanory and not turn a hair, but back then it was a little risqué. Anyway, my mother refused to explain herself to me as she was "trying to listen to the programme".
