Belgium First in the World to Approve Labour Law for Sex Workers | Vantage with Palki Sharma
After Belgium became the first country in Europe to decriminalise sex work in 2022, it is now the first in the world to approve a labour law for sex workers with an employment contract. It entitles the sex worker to health insurance, pensions, unemployment and family benefits, holidays and maternity leave. Sex workers are also entitled to carry out a sexual act how they wish and refuse particular sexual acts or to advertise if their safety is at risk. Does new law set a precedent for other countries? I'm unclear on whether or not the worker has to work for a brothel or pimp. The report did say that Belgium decriminalized self-employed sex work, but the regulations are involving pimps, so are both allowed, or does the worker have to work at a brothel operated by a pimp?
