Well, to be fair 'Romania' is not one homogenous mass. As was already pointed out, gypsies as a group have a load of problems with exemplifying crime and a hatred of women, and outside of that ethnic component, there are massive differences between a wealthy city, a troubled city and the countryside. Having had to study 'the former eastern block' I got a bit of background on the development of Romania during the 1990's up until now and things have improved massively.

That's how the countryside in Romania works. Unlike in other countries it isn't a retirement place...it's just poverty from birth to death. Many villages don't have schools/hospitals, running water in the taps etc. They live how they can. Also guys in poor conditions tend to be gang or bad boy oriented. People in Romania can have very nasty attitudes depending on where they are from. I guess it all adds up

I just saw the BBC documentary on this, but they didn't accept comments. The same girl who was kidnapped at 12 and rescued by her mother was kidnapped again. The police acted so slowly that one girl got murdered by the time they traced the call and got there 24 later. They aren't even punished for doing this, making me think that the police are in on it getting a cut of the action. I wish these girls could defend themselves, carry a knife or something.

I work with a unit that raids brothels in Germany and can say that the most women in there are from Eastern Europe. Romania is the second poorest country in Europe so they seek a better life in the West. The families portraited here are most likely Gypsies who are even poorer than the other Romanians.

It has nothing to do with being gypsy or non-gypsy. It has to do with being female and poor. The same kinds of young women as these - except this time from Eastern Europe (white caucasian girls!!) - are abused and trafficked just as much if not more than these girls. Poverty and female gender are a toxic mix in a dysfunctional world.

For the person who wrote that these people are gypsies, it's irrelevant because it happens to non-gypsie Romanians too and these kids -are kids and they should not have to go through this. And exactly the same procedures like: fall for a guy who will pimp you out or send you to work as something else in a different country and then take your passport and pimp you out or just people who will promise girls decent work in another country, but then prostituting them and keeping them prisoners basically. And if you are Romanian, it is impossible not to know of these situations! Stop acting so ignorant! The family in the video might be Roma, but they speak perfect Romanian (and most probably this is the only language they know) and they are no different than another Romanian human being. It bothers me someone to categorize them as- they are gypsies- like it is normal that it happens to them, but us, the non-gypsies Romanians- it never happens to us- like it's the girls' fault that this happened to them. And it also bothers me for someone to say that they are not Romanians, if they are not Romanians, what are they? Look at Geida, this little angel and how pure she is. You freaking discriminate her for how she looks, but you forget to see her soul, you forget to see that she is no different than your young sister or cousin, or your own child and she should be treated the same way and have the same opportunities as them.

The thing is, nobody is bothered by their ethnicity but by their culture and their lack of integration. Yes they are poor, but they also have the right to free education which in turn can help you out of poverty. But they refuse to go to school and to study, not all of them but a lot of them. Their problem is their culture.

When the Rumanian government give to some gypsies families an apartment they made a pigsty of it and it is not a hearsay. Maybe the government of Rumania should introduce a compulsory level of education for all (gipsy included). In this way perhaps it could be easier to get in contact with other pupils at schools and help change some of their habits. If the government would like at least to try.
