I'm from America and pretty much everyone who isn't a white supremasist agrees that the confederates were really terrible people, and associating with them is not a good thing to do! It would be along the same lines of him being a Nazi soldier, with how terrible both sides were. Obviously that's just my understanding of it, so I might be off or missing a lot.
