I don't want to bring old cars, modern BMWs like the last M5 for example, the car is beautiful. Even the X7 still has more BMW design than this new X3. The Z4 is beautiful but people seem to not take it into account. The problem with BMW is that they want their cars to be bought by people that doesn't know anything about BMW, they just know it's 'cool' and expensive, and they want that type of people now.

I think the front is still quite aggressive while the rear is not which creates a bit of a disconnect in the design, they didn't feel like the same car. I totally get where you’re coming from… when you talk about emotional versus industrial design. Seeing this vehicle has me like, “Here’s another one with less soul than the previous model.” *sigh* I love German design from the ‘70s thru the early 2000s (except for the Bangle 7 Series). Audi is one of my favorite brands as well but they’re getting robotic and cartoonish too. I love my current Audi, though… and after all these years, I still love the way my 2016 TTS looks - from the inside out. It is a very cozy place to be and it - in my opinion - does a minimalist interior in such a beautiful way. It’s fun on back roads, road trips, and it even brings a sense of occasion to running errands. BMW seems to have their customer base, though. I think some of these manufacturers are just running out of ideas. I miss the days when BMW had a powerfully elegant aesthetic. They looked like cars you keep in the family and pass down to your kid as their first car. Now they just seem like disposable iPads with a vehicle built around it. Those older BMWs you showed STILL look like “old money” to me; which is not a bad thing in my opinion.

As an architecture student I can tell you straight that nearly nobody has a pen and a sheet where to sketch. They immediately jump on SketchUp or whatever and start drawing random cubes... And to make it look a bit nicer they start filling them with trees because of sustainability and "greener is nicer". They really need to revising what Mies van der Rohe meant with "simplicity", cause they must have mistaken it as "banality". As for the new X3, is it even a BMW what we're looking at?
@kfh123
@kfh123 3 ай бұрын
@@TheMartin_onTube Thank you. I'm sorry to disagree on Mies van der Rohe. Many architects claim hat they are inspired by Bauhaus and we see the result today. "Form follows function" resulted in ugly cities around the world. The international style today leaves no room for local tradition in architecture. People don't like the architecture they live in. Hence they will not fight to keep the buildings. We build with artificial materials instead of local materials. Here in Germany, instead of rebuilding, we claimed Bauhaus as politically progressiv. Today these cities on concrete are the hot spots for crime and social problems. Luckily some people are waking up, taking up sustainable solutions from the past into urban planing (University of Notre Dame, Stern, Leon Krier). Gropius, like Mies van der Rohe, tried to build during the Nazi ere. Mies van der Rohe even signed a call to vote for Hitler. His real name was Maria Ludwig Michael Mies. So he faked his name to sound more international. The progressive image of the Bauhaus is partly a chimera. This by no means meant as a attack on your craft.

@@kfh123 @kfh123 Honestly, I've never liked Bauhaus and Le Corbusier's stuff I'm more into Wright, but when I look at the Barcellona Pavillion or the interiors of Tugendhat House I don't get the feel of standardization or conformation. However reguarding the way cities looks nowadays I can only agree with you . That's one of the huge downside of globalization, you pay with tradition and national identity. 10:55 yeah about that, I feel like the new method of graphic expression is going to be lighting. After all, anything that’s shining a light in your face will immediately get your attention. The border around the kidney grilles are lit, which draws attention to them, so in a way, the kidneys are still the most prominent design feature of the car. I’m not saying it’s a good thing; I agree with you in that they shouldn’t have made the lower part of the grille so fucking massive, but there is a shift in design occurring, and it’d becoming more and more apparent that lighting is the way of the future in terms of graphic design

To understand what the key models are - look at the most conservative changes in new gen. It’s x5 and 8 series.

To me the front is the absolute biggest let down... the lights angled up and having no continuation to the grill, the random black outs and angles with 0 coherence in bumper. The whole front looking like a 2D tall cliff with almost no sculpting or chamfers.. Im surprised you didnt go into it more. The prev. gen is amazing in comparison.

I had a 2018 BMW X3 M40i several years ago which I loved. It was so much fun to drive and I loved the interior stylings but the warranty ran out and I was scared of dealing with any problems that may have risen outside of the warranty expiration. Also, it didn’t have some things that most vehicles at that time had standard like remote start, electronic telescopic steering wheel, etc. So, I traded it in for a 2022 Genesis GV70 Sport Prestige. I love my Genesis. It reminds me of a BMW as far as being that all around perfect vehicle for the price you pay. So, seeing this new X3 got me scratching my head. The X3 usually has perfect styling inside and out but this? I am confused. It looks more like an EV than an ICE vehicle. I don’t like it at all especially if this is what the “M” styling is going to look like. There are no aggressive lines that I am use to. And the interior is boring and disconjointed. The only thing I like is the taillights and that they intergrated the front grille lights from the XM. Other than that, this is a fail.

People will say the looks grow on them etc because you loose a reference point when the whole lineup is ugly, but as soon as you compare to BMWs of old (even fairly recent designs from a few years ago) then you realise how ugly these new designs truly are.

I totally agree with your assessment of this design. Looks clunky and unappealing as though it was designed by a machine. Hate their minimalist design goals. I was considering the new X3 but after seeing this design, I am hoping the new Q5 doesn't take the same ugly route. I will be looking at that when it comes out and keeping my fingers crossed.

I have a BMW E30 and the way the dashboard was designed so that the driver didn't have to be distracted to make any changes of the air conditioning, the radio, etc. Now no physical buttons and even the traditional shifter which was perfect is now a thing of the past. Also what's with BMW slapping the M badge on everything? My generation lusted for a BMW now we feel shame.

I personally am a huge fan of bmws new design language. I think the opposite of Mercedes. Every car they make now looks terrible to me.

When I saw this BMW drop yesterday, I knew for SURE you would go bananas. Come on brother, look at the interior - not perfect (elongated passenger area) but the details are there! Kinks everywhere. New interfaces, new buttons, NEW style of buttons. The front fascia looks like the iX3 Neue Classe (which is great). Brand new front and rear lamps more integrated, cleaner more modern skirts, new interpretation of the shoulder line, sculpted rear window kink, new ducktail, new rims, better integration of the driver screen, good god I could go on all night

Well, for me it seems that we are moving away from emotional designing cars to a technical/computer based driven design process. Computer that suggest designs, paired with people who maybe don't have a design vision nor a sense of proportions and scales.

Was lost for words when I first saw this new X3. The only thought that came to my mind was “a german brand trying to make a scandinavian design” not in a bad way (I love scandinavian design), just not how german car design is supposed to looks like: precision engineering, high performance focused design, not minimalist razor sharp línes. I prefer the outside from the inside tho…

The only thing I don’t like is the profile. Head on the rear looks great and the taillights are a huge improvement from the last gen. But in profile, the rear end is too vertical or something? It looks a bit ungainly and wagonesque. Otherwise I like it and a year from now a lot of the current haters will, too. 😂

Man… I’m usually very critical of newer BMW designs but I honestly see nothing wrong with this car. I feel like the exterior looks great in the M spec trim. Interior is rough, I’ll admit that, but sort of scratching my head over the amount of hate.

They eliminated the stick shifter and replaced it with a mini shifter. Old school was easy to shift gears; plus shift from automatic to manual. I think that this is going to be a safety issue. I have had three x3’s (the latest is a 2022), and I agree with you that I am not happy with this model. I want to drive the ultimate driving machine; not the space ship Enterprise!

Actually this is some good design, I like it a lot more than previous generation, but interior is a bit too childish imo. If you can change the interior lights to some neutral colors then it is also fine

I'd like to see the new X4 now. When does that come out? You'd think they would release them at the same time. Definitely not a fan of the passenger side dash. There's no design to it whatsoever. It's just a bland large cliff face.
