Switzerland - I travelled here as a young woman with another female friend and we had a horrible experience with a man who offered us a lift. Exposed himself in the car - thought he was going to turn into a forest and full-on attack us. There are good and bad people in all countries - it would be wrong for people to think somewhere is safe on one person’s experience. Happy travelling ✈️🎇

I don't intend to be offensive and I do agree with you that one person's anecdotal experience isn't a great sample size for determining whether a place is safe, but as young women it's really not a good idea to hitchhike and you shouldn't be surprised when a person who offers to give you a ride does something really horrible like what you experienced. Im sorry you went through that but in any country, safe or unsafe, hitchhiking is not a safe activity for single/ pair of women.

I really enjoyed your video!!! As a Chinese American, you have no idea how much it meant to me to hear someone actually speak highly of China. You're right, unfortunately it is a very misunderstood country. I have never been there before, and I admit that I have been ashamed to have origins from China. There have been many reasons I have not decided to go, but your video gives me hope and courage that one day I may go there. 💗 Looking forward to watching more of your videos! Thank you!

I've traveled to many countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa, and I had my phone stolen in Lucerne, Switzerland. I let me guard down when I read about how safe it is, but afterwards I reminded myself that people come in from all over, and I have to constantly be on my guard. Lesson learned. Never let your guard down no matter how safe a place feels.

I just travelled to Japan and was really blown away with how safe and friendly it was. I was almost a little confused as to why an entire culture (country) feels safe, while others don't. What makes people different like that (not individually, but as a culture).

So I visited Berlin for a week and didn't feel safe. Nothing happened. There was no logical reason why I didn't feel safe but I just had a vibe and it set me on edge for the whole time. I was travelling with a friend and staying at the Cat's Pajamas and just that area itself, we'd rush out of it every morning, I didn't want to be out late because I didn't want to walk through it at night. Then we went to Budapest and vibe was a complete flip. We'd walk home to our hostel 15 mins out of the city centre with no concern after a couple of drinks. Sometimes it's not just about the things that happen but trusting your gut when it tells you to be wary.

Hey Kristen, you're one of the few solo female bloggers who's spent a substantial amount of time in China, and thank you for including it on your rec list! Despite its sheer population density, China has top hospitality and very low crime rates especially involving tourists, which is not something that's widely known to the international audience. The people may not appear as "polite" or "attentive" as the Japanese, but they are extremely warmhearted and take it upon themselves to help you out. Hope you can go back to explore more of the country! Gansu and Xinjiang provinces in the northwest have ancient Silk Road remains and otherworldly landscape that look like Mars.

@@Bemytravelmuse that definitely helped and would have been a good point to make. Because if you don't know the language (and regardless of what I said about race) scams are rampant in China if they realise you're an easy target (you don't need to go far in google or reddit to see the warnings about taxi and shops trying their best to make the most out of tourist wallets). Not knowing the language and being a female are two of the worst combinations to have while traveling to China so it's definitely not a good country to recommend so openly.
@bojackkatarn

@@Yuusea What part of China is the "hell scape" part? China's average per capita GDP (nominal $12K) has crept up to the level of many Eastern European countries, on par with a Bulgaria or Romania (which is impressive considering its 70X the population) and the Tier 1 cities, i.e. Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, are downright luxurious.

@@Yuuseathis is just not true. If you ask for help, most of the Chinese people would try their best to help, regardless of you ethnicity. But if you do not ask, it’s just harder for people to go out of their way to help you, because they are not sure whether you need their help or not. Chinese people are generally reserved, it’s not easy for us to start a conversation with strangers. But when you look foreign and probably in need of help, people would notice, and they would reach out.

As a Chinese immigration to the US for over a decade, I must say I do not feel surprised at all that China made the list. Most people I ran into are nice and willing to help if needed. Just a few notes: you might come across scams in hot tourist sites, overcharging, pocket-picking, etc. But these people might treat white people with more respect, which I do not like since I have to admit Chinese are very racist. And people will treat you with more respect or politeness if you dress nicely and high-end. Yes, Chinese admire wealthy people and they treat poor people badly. Other than that, I feel completely safe in terms of your physical safety. You might be pocket-picked, but 99.9% chance you will not be hurt or involved in any sorts of violence, which is quite different compared to city life in the US.

She was groped on the train, stalked by a man on the train and she was also assaulted there. And then there are the natural disasters. There was a tsunami, flooding, an earthquake, a tornado, a volcanic eruption all within a day. I was very happy when she left there. Not to mention the work culture is crazy.

Not me watching this as a female from Finland dreaming of solo trip to Berlin and cycling from there to Poland Krakova and trying to get some info on the safety. 🥲 And since I also want to sleep in my tent I guess I need to rethink this... 😭 But seeing Finland mentioned here warm my heart. ❤️‍🔥 Also seeing you dip in avanto makes you one sisukas perkele. 😝🤣

I wish you wouldn't include Brazil in the South America unsafe travel list. Overall it is no less safe than US or UK but travelling alone there as a woman in early 2020 was the most empowering experience I've had in any country. Men are respectful and kind and everyone is super friendly. ❤

It wasn’t mentioned because it’s unsafe outside of the big cities, but rather than it can be difficult due to the language barrier. This was the opinion of someone sharing with me on social media.

I do have to disagree i absolutely adore brazil it is a lovely country but I have had the worst things happen to me as a woman there. Sexual assault and just a lack of consent and lack of respect for my boundaries were very common. The people of brazil are very kind generous and fun but sexism and violence against women is a very real and valid concern. I am from the uk and it is definitely less safe. Overall however brazil is a beautiful country because of the nature and natural beauty, the gastronomy and the kindness of the brazilian people still worth a visit depsite the issues

China??? This surprised me. I am an ethnic Chinese. The first time I/we went to China(Shanghai), my impressions were, the place is beautiful but people are rude, impolite, not helpful to tourists(including govt officials and airline personnel) ,scammers. Well at least many that we’ve met.

I know the name of the video is called ”countries where I FELT safest” but I still think it’s a shame to emphasise these one time events and thereby discourage people from travelling places. I personally had an awful experience in Copenhagen in a lift - where a man started full on wanking and asked me what my hourly rate was, like these things can happen anywhere! Of course there are places that are more or less safe, but then I would look into statistics rather then listen to these singular accounts… I get that this is just someone sharing their experiences and that it’s not that deep, but I feel like spreading these stories just unneccisarily gives countries a bad rep. I’ve personally been to all the places on her ”unsafe” list (except for the Phillippines) and haven’t had a bad experience in any of them… obviously the Tanzania one is moreso valid because it’s a weather thing…. but overall a lovely place. In Nepal I even spent a full on two months and loved every second of it, and it’s literally known as ”India light” - and I think it’s a great starting out country if you’re new to the travelling scene! Santiago de Chile and Berlin are cities…. cities tend to accumulate a lot of weird ppl… that being said, these cities are not more dangerous than any other……

China 100% make sense. It's generally very safe. If people come off as "rude", they are just direct and don't dance around around culturally, especially the working class, they dont have time for that. You almost have to switch off your guage for politeness and understand that it's all neutral, they are not deliberately making you feel bad.

😂 what are you talking about ? Namibia has a crime rate near Venezuela... Talk about staying true to the narrative .. the safest places on the planet are homogeneous and have high avg I.Q. this should be a no brainer... it still boggles my mind many women will ignore their intuition and stick with "all humans are the same" and any difference thats negative is another "groups" fault

Most places are probably a lot “safer” to travel than to live in. At least proportionally in comparison to the statistics. But sometimes it feels like a lot of travellers just makes shit up like saying a country “just has a bad reputation” or is just as safe as the UK just because nothing happened to them on their 2 week trip.

@@Tina-pw1hr The US is a lot bigger. Most fatal shootings in the US are not mass shootings but gang related exc. It is a very unfortunate problem still, my hearth goes out to the victims. But you can’t ignore that the homicide rate is more then twice that of the US. There are more than 100 times population in the US so counting how often something makes the headlines is not very representative. Rwanda and Nambia are far between each other. Africa is a whole continent of course some countries may have less shootings than the US but please go by yourself to rural Kongo/zimbabwe/Mozambique and so on by yourself and tell me you feel safe and comfortable!

@kidscafe493 Being an Indian woman let me clear the air. Cities like Mumbai are safer than any other part of the world when it comes to women's safety, and I will stand by it. However, yes there are certain places in the north that are not safe for women (Noida-Gurgaon area, Jharkhand, Bihar and UP) where I've felt extremely unsafe. South Indian cities and towns fall in the middle of the spectrum.

Yes, unfortunately Germany has become increasingly unsafe and dirtier over the last ten years. We are also aware of this here in Germany. A lot has happened in Merkel's politics and it is difficult to correct it now.
