I bought Whatever and Ever Amen in '97, when a friend turned me onto it, and my whole friend group and I at the time, played it out (for at least a year straight). Then in 2006 I had an argument with a toxic boyfriend who strung me along for far too long, and I knew he was gonna dump me that day (i wouldn't park in a handicap space when I drove him to deposit a check at the bank, and he had to walk - no exaggeration - 6 parking spaces from the door to my car - he didn't have a car ...and he's not handicapped - ). When I got back to his place, before I left I said "I need to get something.", and ran inside. I remembered this song, and I'd be GOD DAMNED if I was gonna leave my black T-shirt behind!!! (This is a true story) :$

I honestly think that not caring that much about perfect intonation fits perfectly with the song's theme, and with Ben Folds's style of kind of talk-singing and writing lyrics that are more conversational and less poetic. I encourage you to listen to other Ben Folds Five songs like Brick, Army or Battle of Who Could Care Less, I think you'll find that the intonation is better but the style is similar.
