I'll never forget how Canadians were so happy for Ben and then after the result, he was suddenly described as a "Jamaican"!!! Nuff respect to Ben Johnson...🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

@@realbro1415 respectfully, I'm a white Canadian and never considered Ben other than Canadian and still do. If you watched the doc 9.79, most everybody was cheating in that era ( and likely still are), unfortunately Ben became the scapegoat. I was VERY close to the late great Angela Bailey and the inner circle rumors even back at the time were that he was framed and his sample was spiked. At the Dubbin inquiry I believe his team admitted he was using , but not what he tested positive for.

He was tested before the games and was clean when he won. They scanned his urine over 8 times just to find a trace. Carl popped at US trial it was covered up.That's why they couldn't believe that he lost being dirty. Ben is too much of an introvert and a quiet person when they accuse them after the finals, he did not fight and Canada definitely did not even attempt to help him. He was disqualified While in the air flying back to Canada so he wouldn't have known anything until he landed. By that time everything was finalized. The first and only news you heard out of Canada was the JAMAICAN born sprinter. The samples were tampered with reports were altered if Canada, had atleast tried to help him and investigate it he would have been overturned I knew you would have been reinstated. Please remember that until Marion Jones no one knew what USA was was doing And they would pass all their tests because the governing body had no clue What wastheir system and could not test for it And it's just by chance they got exposed. The actions of the athletics community towards Ben are inexcusable. His resilience, along with the support of his mother, enabled him to overcome the challenges he faced and continue to thrive. He had the title of Canadian champion until he tested positive for drugs, after which they immediately changed his nationality to Jamaica. As Jamaicans, we have supported him throughout and will continue to do so. He is our people and we have an immense love for him... As we watched his race in Jamaica, we were moved by the reaction of everyone, followed by the subsequent emotions of anger and sadness he experienced as well as the Jamaican people. The Jamaicans knew that this was not the first time they had done this to our athletes, and it would likely happen again.

I am Jamaican and have been living in America for a long time and Carl Lewis was always so cocky with himself. I remember when he came hard on Ben Johnson. It was such a disgrace, but we did not understand the intricacies and the depth of what was going on. In the long run, lots of them were tested positive. The Americans and the Jamaicans have gotten a lot better in relationships in track and field, but they were beside themselves at one point. He didn't just win, he ran 9.79 (sub 9.80, faster than Noah Lyles has ever ran for reference, faster than the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Champion has ever run) when the next best guy had never broke 9.90 yet. They reverted the WR back to 9.92 when they gave Carl Lewis the victory. To be under 9.8 before anyone else ever broke 9.9 is crazy. Similar to Usain Bolt breaking 9.6 before almost anyone else had ever broken 9.7 (Tyson Gay did with a 9.69 though). Ben was way ahead of his time, he was on par with Maurice Greene who also has a 9.79 PB (though Ben could have potentially went faster if not banned) & it wasn't really until Asafa Powell came along that his 9.79 time truly got passed (unless we count the one off 9.78 from Tim Montgomery).

First.... Ben is a really cool dude. Does a lot in the community with former and current sprinters. However... when they say "snitching" is frowned upon as part of "the code", it's not that you can't tell/reveal what happened. It's that if you're doing the act and get caught, you have to accept the consequences because YOU were involved. Doesn't matter what Jerry, Jim or Carl (😏) was doing as well. You make the decision to participate in a very elaborate doping regimen....if you get caught, you accept the punishment and move it along. And definitely don't get caught again (and then a thrid time) in the years following.

I recently watched a 30 for 30 documentary caled "9.79" which covers this race involving BEN JOHNSON. The ending is interesting because it raised the question whether JOHNSON'S drink was spiked in the testing room when he tested positive? So maybe just maybe he did win that race fair & square.

My favourite era of track n field. Everytime I defend the performance of Ben Johnson online, I am attacked... Cheater, drugs, doesn't count... His time isn't as fast as Bolt. It's incredible how, nearly 40yrs on, his performance has still been scrubbed out. When we look at improvements in technology, training methods, equipment and track, I think he's the fastest that's ever lived. 1. Johnson 2. Bolt 3. Owens.
