If you watched the doc 9.79, most everybody was cheating in that era ( and likely still are), unfortunately Ben became the scapegoat. The actions of the athletics community towards Ben are inexcusable. His resilience, along with the support of his mother, enabled him to overcome the challenges he faced and continue to thrive. He had the title of Canadian champion until he tested positive for drugs, after which they immediately changed his nationality to Jamaica. As Jamaicans, we have supported him throughout and will continue to do so. He is our people and we have an immense love for him... As we watched his race in Jamaica, we were moved by the reaction of everyone, followed by the subsequent emotions of anger and sadness he experienced as well as the Jamaican people. The Jamaicans knew that this was not the first time they had done this to our athletes, and it would likely happen again.

He didn't just win, he ran 9.79 (sub 9.80, faster than Noah Lyles has ever ran for reference, faster than the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Champion has ever run) when the next best guy had never broke 9.90 yet. They reverted the WR back to 9.92 when they gave Carl Lewis the victory. To be under 9.8 before anyone else ever broke 9.9 is crazy. Similar to Usain Bolt breaking 9.6 before almost anyone else had ever broken 9.7 (Tyson Gay did with a 9.69 though). Ben was way ahead of his time, he was on par with Maurice Greene who also has a 9.79 PB (though Ben could have potentially went faster if not banned) & it wasn't really until Asafa Powell came along that his 9.79 time truly got passed (unless we count the one off 9.78 from Tim Montgomery).

First.... Ben is a really cool dude. Does a lot in the community with former and current sprinters. However... when they say "snitching" is frowned upon as part of "the code", it's not that you can't tell/reveal what happened. It's that if you're doing the act and get caught, you have to accept the consequences because YOU were involved. Doesn't matter what Jerry, Jim or Carl (😏) was doing as well. You make the decision to participate in a very elaborate doping regimen....if you get caught, you accept the punishment and move it along. And definitely don't get caught again (and then a thrid time) in the years following.

I recently watched a 30 for 30 documentary caled "9.79" which covers this race involving BEN JOHNSON. The ending is interesting because it raised the question whether JOHNSON'S drink was spiked in the testing room when he tested positive? So maybe just maybe he did win that race fair & square.

In my mind Ben Johnso is the King Speedster….back in 1988 for someone to do 9.79…you have got to be lightning fast…I really don’t care about what he did…but his explosive start and the fiery run is etched in many people’s minds … God Bless Ben Johnson🙏

My favourite era of track n field. Everytime I defend the performance of Ben Johnson online, I am attacked... Cheater, drugs, doesn't count... His time isn't as fast as Bolt. It's incredible how, nearly 40yrs on, his performance has still been scrubbed out. When we look at improvements in technology, training methods, equipment and track, I think he's the fastest that's ever lived. 1. Johnson 2. Bolt 3. Owens.
