I think they did do an episode like that really early on, but it was more about their original day jobs being crime stats analysts for the Canadian government and less about sociology at large, but I mean... That job fully exists for the purpose of doing sociology

I think everyone telling Ben "be yourself wear nail polish don't let other people judge you" is kind of missing the point. Yes, appearance discrimination and gender bias still exist and are problems that should be confronted, not appeased. But I felt Ben was referring more to situations when he wouldn't want the nails to become the center of attention, or a distraction from whatever he was trying to do. Even if all the comments he received were 100% positive, perhaps there are some situations where he just didn't want people to notice him at all. Sometimes you want to wear your loudest colors and a jacket with big sleeves and a Climate Change Kills hat because you're in the mood to make a statement today. And sometimes you just want to put on a hoodie and sunglasses to go buy milk and eggs. I'm sure Ben doesn't always want to give a spiel about Holo Taco every time he has to mail something at the post office or pick up Dairy Queen. That's not acquiescing to societal pressure or outdated gender norms. That's just trying to have a quiet life.

On fruit flies, coming from someone who works with Drosophila, once it gets cold enough they’ll go away. But you can try pouring boiling water down your sink drains since they like to lay their eggs down there, so the problem is less the adults but the larva and eggs. Apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap is a classic trap too to help maintain the adults too.

Also about the guys wearing nail polish thing, there’s definitely a lot of pressure when you wear nail polish as a guy because you are emasculated or made fun of/judged very frequently. It’s way worse when you are travelling abroad as well. But gotta be the change you want to see in the world

I think Lite Mode and Chromes didn’t sell great because they’re hard to get across in camera. I got Wireless Mode as a free polish and was SHOCKED at how beautiful it was in person. Same for Aquafoil!

I'm a guy and my gf paints my nails every week or so (with halo taco ofc) and I do enjoy it but it is annoying having to explain myself at work, to contractors here, why my nails are silver, or at the gym, I catch guys starring at my nails. I do it anyways though.

i get ben’s answer about the nail polish tbh. i’m a girl and like to dress traditionally girly n stuff like that n with my hair done up (curled straightened blow outs etc.) and i do the same thing he does lol 😭 since being feminine is looked down on i find that i do tone it down and dress differently when i’m meeting someone new or doing something more profesional cause i don’t want to be treated differently or seen as dumb.

I think Cristine was more about doing things despite discomfort as he's in a place of privilege to do so, so the challenge was less that he didn't experience that but moreso that he could try and push back against it. I think they're both right. It takes a lot to wear nail polish in front of a contractor though 😅

He is pretty outspoken and very firm in his values, it would take a lot more than a plumber or some Karen at Starbucks to rattle him. I think he just prefers to be low key and fly under the radar. Even if people were only approaching him with compliments on his polish, maybe he just wants to go buy a bagel in peace and not have anyone approach him at all. I don't fault him for that at all. Sometimes I want to wear a flashy suit and expensive sunglasses to show off, sometimes I want to wear jeans and a hoodie and go unnoticed so people will leave me alone.

fruit fly trap that works rly well in my experience: a little bit apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a cup, swirl it around so the soap makes the sides of the cup slippery, plastic wrap to cover the cup and poke little holes in it

As a guy wearing nail polish 24/7 I do see what Ben is feeling. I also work in a grocery store and because I’m a guy, people notice it A LOT and will comment on it so frequently my coworkers even started noticing how much comments I get. And people in my town are mostly really chill about it and give A LOT of compliments (thanks to my HT collection ofc❤) which I love. But I do get snarky looks or snarky comments/“jokes” too and people who treat me differently after I started wearing it or after they started noticing. And everything (the compliments and the bad comments) both show how nail polish is still seen as such a gendered item even though all it is is a color on ur nails. And sometimes when meeting new people who u notice are noticing ur nails and not saying anything it’s still a grey area where u don’t know what their opinion about it is and how they’re gonna treat u because of it.

At the point about the world's view of men wearing nail polish. My son went to pre-school and was so proud of his nails. When he came home, he quietly asked me to take the polish off. It broke my heart. His teachers loved his nails and mentioned how sparkly they were, however classmates (3 & 4 year olds, mind you) were telling him polish was for girls only. He still wants his nails painted, but usually makes me stick to his toes.

the fruit fly trap that has always worked for me consists of a cup, saran wrap, and a piece of fruit. put a slice of fruit or citrus dusted in sugar in a cup, preferably disposable. place the saran wrap tight over the cup, poke tiny holes with the tip of a sharp pencil or scissors, and then place it on the counter, in a corner, or on a self. the fruit flies can get in through holes in the saran wrap but then won't be able to get out.

I don't know if someone already mentioned it but here is some advice if you're struggling with fruit flies. Put some apple cider vinegar in a small cup or bowl and then add a few drops of liquid dish soap. The vinegar attracts the flies and they will drown because of the soap. At least this is how I got rid of them.

As someone with a psychology background, it was so sad to read about what Jennette went through because I went through also psychological/emotional trauma. But manipulation like that is hard to read about bc I understand why people do that, but it hurts to see when family does that to other family. I am glad she is in a better spot with her view of herself and her career, and reading her autobiography will help inform and protect others who have been through similar situations/prevent that from happening to more people. I had no idea that was something you guys read in the book club, but that's good that it was! There needs to be more honest discussion about heavier things but without making it feel like it is some unspoken/taboo/embarrassing thing.

1. Thank you for putting these on spotify! I almost always listen whilst driving or working. 2. I am that one wierdo who only likes green bananas. Too sweet and smelly otherwise 3. Private landscaping is nowhere near as profitable as commercial, and some places either won't do it or will expect more than lawn mowing ( my bro is a landscape manager and they basically only did commercial after COVID) 4. I do totally get where Ben is coming from with folks being judgmental about a man with nail polish. It is much less of a deal nowadays but as a queer resident of the Bible Belt, I understand why it is easier to avoid the situation altogether rather than deal with any questioning.

I've been painting my boyfriend's nails because he really likes the colours and holo. His mom keeps making bad comments about him wearing nail polish and it does make him self conscious about wearing nail polish now, even though he loves the look.

About the fruit flies: I suggest putting a small bowl partially filled with apple cider vinegar on the counter. Cover it with plastic wrap and poke small holes in it. Should catch a lot of the flies!
