Yesterday I told my professor - in a discussion where he stated “if you disagree tell me” - that I did not believe white people were the only ones with privilege in this country. That I believed that white people do not benefit from a system that is solely meant to benefit them in today’s society. I said that we should not raise black children to see white people as villains bc that creates a victim hood that predetermines success. He said that my opinion was a disgrace to black people, likened it as if I were saying black people should “stop complaining”, and called it cowardly. I’m a black woman.

Its the truth! Raising your kids to think that the world they live in is against them because of their race and that white people are successful because of some made up "privilege" is some backward ass thinking! Instead of telling your kids there is nothing in the world that will stop you from achieving your goals you are essentially telling them they might as well not even try! @@achilles210smitad4 Well, I wasn't saying to stop complaining. The professor twisted my words. If you see *true* injustice, regardless of race, you should call it out. I don't care if people call it "complaining" or "whining" or whatever - call it out & examine it. I also think it is important to teach the historical trauma of enslavement in America so that we do not perpetuate it, and thereby, creating a generation of victors NOT victims. I do not think there is current systems of racism and privilege that exist today though. I think black people have privilege too (affirmative action, college money, etc). If anything, the current system benefits the rich and/or the educated, which could be a whole slew of races. I agree with you 100% on everything else though.

I notice alot of times when people say things are about race that there is nothing to back it. im a white man who grew up in a low income area, surrounded by a lot of black people. i was raised with the same ideology as a lot of the people around me. the government is racist, sexist and wants the low class to burn BUT when i learned smaller things that made sense i would be hated on by people in my community or they would give me a reason that is so illogical that it doesnt make sense. for example, me and a group (my brother and his friends) were talking about white on black crimes and they kept on saying that white people murder black people way too much and that most deaths for black people are because of white people, i pointed out that according to the FBI data its more likely that black people commit homicides then white people, and most homicides and manslaughter charges are intraracial meaning the victim and the killer are the same race. even though this is completely true they did not believe it and even went as far as to say that the government is lying to make black people look bad, even after i mentioned that the FBI data shows that in all crimes white people statistically do it more except for three which is homicide, burglary and gambling and still they didnt believe a word i said. i learned that, like you said, a lack of details can distort the picture, but sometimes people dont want to see the details and only want to see the picture they want. no matter what you tell them, some people wont listen and only few it one way and wont change, and sadly because of this nothing will change.

Applicable Apple I’ve recently asked a Social Justice professor about the Ivy League admissions scandal-that Asian students are subject to higher standards than their White counterparts. I asked this because I was genuinely curious as to how White Privilege would play into Asian applicants being penalized over Whites, from the Social Justice standpoint. She kept on saying Asians have been used by alt-rights and Neo Nazis as an excuse to justify racism. When I told her that didn’t seem to address my question directly, she got frustrated and started to tell me that: (a) Asians were newcomers that have not experienced racism in the US; and (b) they are over-represented anyway, so their enrollment needs to be capped. WHOA!!!!!!!!! First, (a) is factually incorrect, but she hadn’t even heard of the railroad workers or the Chinese Exclusion Act...when she is a self-proclaimed civil rights champion. She *was* aware of the Japanese American internment but, instead of developing a meaningful dialogue, she immediately asked if I was aware of the cruel things the Japanese (not Japanese American, of course!) government had done prior to that. Seriously. I didn’t realize Social Justice was big on scapegoating. Second, I pointed out to her (b) sounded incompatible with the Social Justice framework-to present hurdles to make things harder for people of color, under the entire premise of White Privilege. Her response? “Asians aren’t generally considered people of color because, unlike Blacks and Latinos, they chose to come to the US.” She added that I needed to do my homework and learn history before asking stupid questions. LESSON: Asians are VERY INCONVENIENT to Social Justice Worriers because Asian success exposes the fundamental flaws in their premise of White Privilege.

We all hate it when she comes to parties because she’d take every opportunity to lecture us on ethics and morality, like God has given her the gift of virtue nobody else has. Anyhow, this Social Justice Godess has never heard of Chinese railroad workers or the Chinese Exclusion Act-and thinks the internment of Japanese Americans was fully justifiable.

He busted his ass and worked his way up the ladder in a housing company for over 25 years. Then he got laid off and replaced by someone who had a better education and who could work for half the pay. I'm sorry to hear that. I have dutch-german and Czechoslovakian family that struggled coming to America. Thought not as much as my Italian family did. My great great nonna lost two children to discrimination of communists (which they were not). One child lost a hand at a young age working in a factory. She did have too many kids lol (7 came over with them, 1 when they were here). They were immensely poor and did not expect it to be as bad as it was. All the kids had to work from a young age. The ones who could go to elementary school did but only one boy graduated high school. The others (died .. or) had to work. My great nonna saw a better economy during her prime but she and my polish great grandpa were fearful after what they grew up in so they had only one child. At least we're able to afford a small house before he lost his hearing to factory work and my great nonna lost him to pneumonia in their early 70s. She worked until she was 78 and was caretaker for me most of my youth until she died at age 90. There were no handouts for us. Nor for my paternal side. It was about working hard to hope you can pass your "wealth" down the line. For my paternal side they were less discriminated for sure but it was not easy and they were responsible people. Still along the way we have two generations later of many bad choices and still no silver spoon for being white. People forget how the vast majority of all people including white are lower class if not in poverty.

Does systemic racism only affect black males? I’m a Hispanic woman, my parents did agricultural work all their lives. I almost didn’t graduate high school because I had no one to support my and tell me to get my act together. A counselor talked sense into me and I went to summer school and got all my missing credits. I began working as a receptionist at a hospital right after high school but I felt like I could do more. A couple of years after I started taking college classes at night while working full time. I didn’t speak English at twelve years old when I came into this country and now I have a bachelor’s degree. Most of my Hispanic friends dropped out of school and had babies when they were still teenagers. My point is, we all have the ability to make choices. I’m not rich by any means, but I feel successful. I have cousins in law enforcement, others who are professionals in different fields, and the ones who aren’t have moderately well earning jobs. All of our parents were or are poor agriculture workers, so where is this systemic racism?

My dad (who is black) was a veteran, a senior software engineer and he owned a school where he taught others how to code in the early 2000s. My friends and teachers were mostly white and only ever treated me with love, care and respect. The white people who I know (and there are many) judge by character, NOT by color. I was asked to spearhead a report about why so many juveniles in detention were black. After two years of research...it came down to bias. One story stood out to explain what was happening. Police officer told us if two kids were playing baseball in a field and accidently broke someone's window...and police take both kids to the police station.... Parents are called. White kids parents show up...take the kid home, charges are likely dropped. Black kids parents don't show up to take their kid home. WHY? Because it was the policy the the police to run background checks on any minority that entered the police station...even f they just stopped to ask for directions! Why did the police discriminate in this way...? Because they knew minorities are more impoverished and were more likely to have outstanding warrants. So, because the parents fear the police (with good reason) what happens to the child whose parents would not pick him up? He goes to detention...sometimes for months!!!! How does that impact his thinking about the world? Good for you that your dad worked so hard....but it does not deny that systemic racism exists.

I do wish Ben would have addressed incarceration differences. As a liberal person, one argument I've always found powerful for systemic racism is precisely this issue. With a quick Google, landed on the ALCU's website that says "Marijuana use is roughly equal among Blacks and whites, yet Blacks are 3.73 times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession." Perhaps one can explain this all away that in denser, urban areas, more arrests will happen so if more black people live in this area than white people, that's what causes it. That's still a gigantic problem related to race. If you want to say, like Bernie did, that it's really all a class problem and racism can basically be reduced to that, fine. But to me at most they seem incredibly wrapped up together. Because then that would lead people's perceptions to assume black people in general are poorer, and therefore likelier to be criminals, etc. and that would spill out to society's judgments in general.

There are a lot of details missing in those stats to draw any conclusions. First, are the use stats self-reported…have they checked for self reporting bias? Are these arrests just for possession or incidental possession charges in association with arrests for other crimes and/or possession of additional types of drugs? We already know there’s a crime rate disparity. Or perhaps it’s a behavior/visibility thing. It’s harder to get caught for possession when you smoke in a private residence and your drugs remain hidden than if you are out in public or in a car. Or a police presence thing. If people in your neighborhood are committing a lot of crime, maybe there is more police presence to get caught for petty crimes. Or a geographic thing- southeastern states with higher black populations probably have stricter drug laws than western states. Does “possession” exclude “possession with intent to sell” because there are reported disparities in the rate of drug dealing. Of course it is absurd the government is even meddling with the sale and possession of herbs and drug laws do have racist roots, but that doesn’t mean these modern stats are evidence of systemic racism.

The problem with that video is that they started off assuming the neighborhoods are all white or all black. It is assuming there are no rich or middle class black people living in better neighborhoods with better schools, and it is also assuming that there are no poor white people living in poverty and going to poor schools. It is also assuming that the poor black people has no access to better jobs just up the road from there. I live in a mixed neighborhood with middle class blacks, including one who paid cash for his home just across the road. He has his own business, drives nice cars and trucks and the other black neighbors are also driving very nice cars, equal to or better than the one I'm driving. It is also assuming that the reason the white boy lives in a better neighborhood is because he is racist, not because his father and mother just simply did better like my black neighbors have done. Too many assumptions based on very weak evidence.

Maybe, "African American" defines the difference with 'ease of conscience' for the speaker. So, isn't that a bit of pre-judgement going on in that persons head right there. Look, in my humble opinion, the right way to define people is simply to say 'Americans' and disregard race. But society isn't ready. Just look at Election Polls, they have to cut the pie to tell you how many black, white or asians voted. Go fill out a job application, they ask race and want to cut the pie to how they think. And, here's another one, employers can now ask you if you are under 40, just the same as asking if your are over 18. Congressional Law changes this nonsense. But I don't even hear talk of this! Because our ancestors voted in stupidity decades and decades ago, we live with this stupidity still. Tearing down statues won't fix it, we need to stop asking Americans to define themselves into compartments for the stupid Laws they want to label us with based on the color of our skin.

@@hithere748 Redlining didn't exist at the time of Black Street, you couldn't enter the neighborhood to even see a house to buy -- unless your were a gardener, handyman or housekeeper -- hence, "sundown towns." They built BWS by aggregating their own money (like China town today). However, BWS wasn't the only town that was burned down or even flooded to hide massacres (Lakes Smith, Martin, and Lanier) but NUMEROUS other prosperous black towns were burned to the ground as well. What would the Asian community look like if every chinatown (including their banks) were burned down and insurance companies refused to pay out? You would probably say, they should use their homes as collateral to build again? Yes, provided 1) you owned your home in which most black people then , or even now, don't own homes -- they are forced to rent. I'm sure you know that rent is cheaper than a mortgage. and 2) provided the bank will give you a loan. Good luck. Nixon had to pass a bill in the late 70's requiring banks to give loans to qualified applicants who deposited money in those banks. Sounds like common sense but black people were denied loans even if they owned their own homes outright (watch the movie "THE BANKER" starring Samuel L. Jackson and you'll understand). This has caused great animosity between black and immigrant business owners. Immigrants are given small business loans, with NO collateral, while black families are denied loans when they have a house that's completely paid for, as collateral. (If you're paying attention to what's going on in Chicago today with illegal immigrants given thousands of dollars in stipends -- it's nothing new). University of Wisconsin released a study showing that a white couple making $30,000/yr with the same credit score as a black couple making $100,000/yr had the same rejection rate when applying for a loan. Even if you own your own home, it is valued less, actually the black housing market is UNDERVALUED in the BILLIONS according to Brookings and other studies. I live in the one of top 10 wealthiest black neighborhoods in the US and the highest black ownership (98%). Everyone is white collar (Dr.s, lawyers, CEOs) the average house is $400,000 . . . . yeah and we have NO BANK in our community. We have to deposit our checks in the middle class white neighborhood next door and they sweat us when we apply. We have been practicing capitalism without capital. In other words "we make bricks without straw." If you saw our community with lakes, winding roads and 2acre lots you'd be impressed in how beautiful it looks and yet shocked that it is INTENTIONALLY undervalued. Our houses should be twice the price. So, even if we were to get a loan we are hindered by how much we can get. If you are genuinely interested in learning how this really works I can send you links but if you just want to say: "Black people just don't want to work" . . . then God bless and have a good life.

For whatever reason, black on black violence such as this is completely off the table for discussion. Even though most homicide is people of the same race and so on. It's PAINFULLY clear that all of the white people pushing this systemic racism ideology are not doing it out of love for black people, rather hatred for the upper class. Which is sad because most of those white people are baby upper class members themselves.

I love that he does his gaslighting before and after every segment. I also noticed there was no mention of the destruction of Black generational wealth when white Americans burned and looted over 130 Black towns...65 of which are under lakes to this day. There was also no mention of the 1956 Highway Act that led to the United States highway system being built over most of the prominent Black neighborhoods in America. There was no mention that the "War on Drugs" was admitted to be a war on Black people and anti-war activists...that was an admission from the Nixon administration. There was no mention of the race based origins of PSAT tests, which were written by the very man who wrote racist tests for the military to keep Black people out. Also, how the hell is "Washington" a historically Black name? It was literally the name of the first president....a white man.🤣🤣😂🤣 As for the prison population. Aside for the aforementioned "war on drugs"... In Chicago police had a Black site on the west side where they tortured teenagers. In Alabama 1,500 Black men were framed by the police. In Pennsylvania 3,500 children were sold to the justice system in a scandal called "Kids for Cash". In New York police were literally told to target Black and Brown people...and they were more than happy to do it. I would love to debate this idiot.

1) Jamal's family cannot afford to move and live in the suburbs. 2) Vouchers do not cover all school expenses. Therefore, Jamal's family will need to fund the additional 2+k needed. 3) Jamal's family will have to figure out how to get Jamal to and from the school outside his district. It isn't magic. 4) You can change a policy, but that does not equate to a change in cultural attitudes and beliefs. No one knows this more than white people who live in white spaces. 5) The most common form of social mobility is horizontal. 66% of intergenerational social mobility is either stagnant (maintaining class status) or downward. 6) I find it odd that we question the relevancy of implicit bias in regard to race disparities, but every business school I know of teaches the value of cognitive bias. Ten, to be exact. Interestingly, Ben describes the process of cognitive biases in his explanation of name recognition. BTW, both examples hint at cultural bias. 7) Ben neglects to explain that minorities earn significantly less than their white counterparts in the same occupations. 8) If we modeled our education system after the military education system for military personnel, we would see vast improvements. They pay teachers well, provide all class materials, have small class sizes, and provide meals. The result? Significantly better outcomes despite race, ethnicity, and gender. Additionally, the children of officers share the same classrooms as the children of privates. 9) Failed neighborhood schools? Fix them! Revamp the system. 10) Lastly, I agree neither party has produced functional policies. We know this because we see the outcomes in diverse red and blue states and counties. Again, military schools for the children of military personnel outperform all others. Let's give that a try.

As an asian who also used to use that argument a lot, i want to bring up the model minority myth! Yes, there are a lot of asians who have worked crazy hard and have changed their circumstances. But a part of that was that we were "allowed" to by the people more privileged than us because they wanted to make an example out of asians. Culturally, we're a lot more quiet and well behaved, so we've been propped up as a group to be used as a weapon against those who fight back. "Asians are the perfect example of what hard work and dedication will get you," yes, but if and only if it's advantageous for the more privileged to let them get anywhere in the first place.

White people were the ones who put us in internment camps just for looking asian during WW2, we were forced to work on the railroads because "the more privileged didn't want to", the "privileged colleges" are actively trying to exclude asians from their universities, we have been oppressed through history as well. If anything they tried to make a poor example out of asians in history, but we worked hard and grinded our success into existence. We're culturally more quiet because were told not to complain or say anything because it is our duties to work harder and get whatever it is done. statistically, Black women do pretty well compared to black males because on average they go after degrees like nursing and get their degree at a trade school and work their way up and avoid that University debt. Nursing is one of the solid jobs where there isn't a huge disparity in relative percentage. US population is 13.4%, Black Nurse practitioners account for 12.6% of nurse practitioners. I would consider that a win even if it is a small one.

Let's not forget that Asian families are prospering in the US even after coming as a poor immigrant. Try and hold a kid accountable for his academic progress and you get angry mom in yelling that the teacher can't teach her boy and that the school is racist. I raised my son as a single mom 40 years ago, when my exhusband abandoned us. I am a second generation American Italian. My parents grew up in spanish harlem tenements, with one bathroom PER FLOOR for all families and no heat at night. They put boiling water in bottles and kept them in the bed at night. My son and I lived in a "hole" apt in New Jersey with roaches, buckets for leaking ceiling, no heat or hot water for weeks at a time in the winter. My son was enrolled in every after school program that existed, I kept him BUSY, I helped him with homework every night due to his learning disability. He obtained an undergraduate degree by waiting tables and working on campus and went on to get a masters degree. He is a great husband and father, just bought a big house with an apartment for me inside. No more worrying about paying the rent. My point? We can from a poor family with only a high school education; we worked hard; we stayed out of trouble. I helped my son get through college, he worked hard at his job and moved up, life is good, with hard work AND the grace of God.

They probably would have trouble getting callbacks but not at an equal rate as black applicants, It seems like "Cletus" would have a better time than "Jamal." "Cletus" with a criminal record (statistically) would get call backs for a job more often than a "Jamal" with NO criminal record (www.themarshallproject.org/2018/11/13/the-inspiring-life-and-career-of-devah-pager). Also, you have to remember, Karen, that these people's resumes are exactly the same, so the only difference is a NAME. At that point it should be a 50/50 shot, do you really believe "Cletus" and "Jamal" will get an equal amount of call-backs? Maybe... but the larger world of evidence outside of Ben Shapiro's video and the one study he talks about would not support that claim. I know I probably won't win your heart over in a KZbin comment, but stop thinking Ben Shapiro is the end all be all of educational policy. Education is a complex issue, with complex policies that change state to state, having Ben Shapiro lay down some broad school choice talking points does little for the advancement of urban, suburban, and rural education across American.

@@el_main8723 I think most of the studies on african american discrimination in the work place have serious holes in them, especially when trying to associate them with the reason for "racial inequality" and unemployment among blacks. The point of this comment is actually quite. fair. If you research the names used in the studies and for this "educational" video you'll learn that the "african american" names are extremely rare and make up less then 1% of the black population. The vast majority of black people actually have non racially distinct names, so using this study to conclude broad racial discrimination would, well, not hold up in the court of law. The other studies use black actors in interviews, like really? You expect a low budget actor to perform better then an actual prepared job applicant...

I grew up homeless since I was ten, I've experienced beautiful hospitality from people of all color, and I've also experienced cruelty from all... there is good and bad in everyone and thing that walks the Earth. Democrats were the ones that fought to keep slavery so it's not surprising they did it. But that's always a funny subject to me, our two party system I mean. George Washington warned us about the issues with parties and he was right. We regard parties like fans regard football teams. It has a larger impact on all of us than systemic racism. At least that focused on one group... Our party issues target all Americans. But whatever... Go team!!!
@EpiphanyTripleX

@Zachariah Gordon I totally agree about the impact of systemic racism. If you stab a person they don't heal the moment you remove the blade, which seems to be the idea with some people in regards to systemic racism. It bleeds and takes time to heal. Unfortunately our past is going to require a century or two to shake that issue away. We can only do our best now so that our descendents will live the best life they can. It's not fair but nobody said life would be.

Mr. Levitt was responsible for the 1st suburban homes in the United States Before him being able to start his project he needed approval from the government In the paperwork it says that this community is community is strictly intended for caucasians only do not sell to any one else. And our government approved it. Now this jerk is trying to lead you to believe that it had nothing to do with race when it's plainly says it in black-and-white. Not to sell to anyone but caucasians.
