There has been great controversy surrounding the new Adamas from Benchmade, namely with its lock and durability. Is the talk around town true? Is it as weak as people say? Well that is what we are talking about in this video!

I love tests like this that show what someone can reasonably expect out of their knife if they had no other option. Emergencies will always catch us off guard, so this type of information is great to have just in case. Thanks for sharing your findings on the knife's (and the lock's) capabilities, not to mention your time and money!

Check out Joe X channel where he puts some folders through hard military use. Triad lock from Cold Steel stands WAAAAAY heavier use than batoning. You can hit it with a rock on the lock and it will hold (especially a 4max that holds 600lb of pressure…600! Stronger than most light to medium fixed blades and small hatchets).

Benchmade advertises the adamas as a hard use "tactical" blade. How on earth are you going to use the adamas in a hard use tactical situation if it can't even handle light batoning???. No one is going to process wood with a pocket knife. He's just doing light batoning to test benchmades claim of it being a hard use "tactical" folder. Benchmade is obviously lying about it being a hard use tactical folder.

I haven't really been carrying folders alot anymore for EDC. I usually will carry a small izula sized fixed blade IWB. I have a bunch of stuff that size like the izula, bk14 eskabar, BM hidden canyon, couple custom ones, Bradford Guardian, ect. Its not absolute comfort but if you ccw your used to it anyway. Frees up a pocket nobody see's it. They are stong enough for most tasks but nimble for fine tasks. I've lost quite a few folders in my days too either working construction or in the woods wearing a folder in my pocket. I'll be doing something and brush up against something or a branch at the perfect height and it has lifted my knife out of my pocket without me noticing. I lost a Spyderco Shaman that way. Luckily i was on a very leisurely trail behind my house and backtracked. I actually found the knife on the trail hanging by the clip on a branch. Hasn't happened to me yet with a fixed blade in a sheath.

The NPCs in the comments saying they would never baton a knife are missing the point. Let's say in a pinch you pull out your knife to do an awkward cut, you slip, pull back and hit something. The force I have seen to make an Adamas fail is well within human force accident range. Then your hand is cut, bleeding and perhaps needing stitches. This is unacceptable performance for a tough use knife when a Bugout is tougher. Clearly the axis lock met it's match with the design in this knife. Too heavy, not enough security.

If one wants a tough folding knife they need to look no further than the Buck 110 or Cold Steel AD10. BUT, we should also remember these are knives (cutting, slicing, carving), not hatchets or axes (chopping, splitting).

Cold steel 4 max scout, everything that costs 1€ more than that and claims to be “strong” is wasted money. It’s not good looking, it’s a tool and it’s a really absurdly strong tool. It replaced saw + fixed blade for me. Lighter and equally capable, not missing anything when it’s on me. It’s easily carryable in my pocket and does everything while hiking and climbing

@@clintwestwood3539 I had a Cold Steel 4Max Scout and do not disagree with you. I just preferred the Cold Steel AD10. Today in the wilderness I carry a Victorinox Camper SAK and a small Kephart style hatchet and never feel I am underserved by these tools. If I was going out for a long trek I might add a small folding saw, but the saw blade on the Camper has not failed me yet. I still believe knives are for cutting, slicing, and carving and hatchets & axes are for chopping an splitting.

@@ROE1300 I can agree that knife + saw + axe + small blade for food prep should be what we bring out, but when I tried different configurations, the 4 max alone as carry stood out to me. I walked Slovenian woods (really harsh) for a month worth total and I never ever needed more than that. It’s also pretty decent for cooking (I still use my Opinel 10 for it but it’s so lightweight that I don’t count it)

@@kejadventures241 it all depends on what you do outdoor. If you are someone that actually walks/explore 1/2 pounds can make an huge difference especially on multi days. It’s not even about ultralight, it’s just about optimising what you have on you for the best comfort. Personally when I go for a 40km trip three days (100/120km total) with huge up and downs through mountains and with some walls to climb, you realise how much stuff you really don’t need. However if you just take a bag, walk a few hours to then set camp with a 15/20kg backpack on you that’s a different story. I enjoyed the video (as probably others since lots of people do what I do) and it’s relatable.

Battoning with a pocket knife? What has the outdoors community come to? If Only there was a tool with a long handle and a wedge shaped blade that you could get for $25 that could do this same task. But it's probably a better idea to use a $200 folder designed to ride in your pocket for work as a hard use outdoor tool.

I stand behind chopping and batoning with a folder knife to be honest. Let me explain: I use a Cold Stee 4 max scout for my main weekend hobby which is trekking/hiking/climbing with some camping/bushcrafting for the night to both eat and sleep. If you walk 20/30 km with huge difference in heights, through mountains usually, you want every single grams on you to count. You don’t want extra weight. You can carry a foldable saw during winter (better than an axe IMO since I’m not building camps and not staying in a place for more than a few hours to rest) and during summer the saw becomes cumbersome and not that useful. A GOOD folding knife with a GOOD locking system (and 50/100€ is more than enough for that) will do everything you’d do with a small axe, saw and bushcraft knife. That’s why a folding knife with a strong lock has its place. Not everyone wants to go in the woods, find a single spot and build a camp. There are some people that prefer to explore, walk (a lot) and then use bushcrafting skills to set up a resting place while eating/sleeping.

@@clintwestwood3539 There are lightweight fixed blades designed purely for that. As a carpenter I carry heavy tool bags and boards all day up-and-down ladders. Carrying a bag on the weekend is no issue for me. And someone who does this regularly you should be building strength. So why not add a few pounds and make yourself even stronger. Like you said you're walking 10 to 15 miles in the mountains, being stronger will only benefit you.

@@kejadventures241 it is when you climb a wall and do 30/40km trekking. Climbing a ladder and climbing a wall it’s WAY different. Not even in the same universe as effort. A strong lock folding blade will outperform a lightweight fixed blade any day any time. You can take a look at JOE X channel too if you want to see how far can knives go. 4max simply doesn’t break at its lighter than any fixed blades I own and I can reliably chop and baton with it.

@@clintwestwood3539 Now it's 15 to 20 miles? For a European you sure are like watching a lot of American outdoors videos. You're shooting yourself in the foot man. people who do that kind of distance in the mountains bring stoves. Especially if this is a weekend hobby and you have to go back to work Monday morning. @@kejadventures241 it all depends on the trail. Something like Via degli Dei in Italy is different from the primitive trail in Spain. I do bring stove, I do bring food, I do bring water. Like everyone. What I’m saying is that when you start walking for more than a few hours you will start regretting having extra weight, especially if while your are trailing you do an Alta via or have to climb a wall (and you have to bring your helmet and stuff for that too). I’m not trying to convert you. I couldn’t care less about that. You said that it didn’t make sense, I’m telling you from a personal point of view that it does. For me as for others. No reason to argue there. I too started with small hatchet, folding saw, victorinox and fixed blade. Realised that the hatchet was redundant, folding saw/bow saw useful in winter time and fixed blade heavier than a folding one and probably less capable (DBK/Joe X do decent videos on the topic too and I can confirm as user what they found). Also no need to get angry because someone has a different experience. You said it was futile, I’m telling you it’s not. As OP could have done too since in the video he’s stating that a good folding blade is more than capable (and in other videos too). Relax a bit, take a deep breath from time to time. It can help you live better and probably longer! Cheers
