It's unclear why the lock is disengaging. Either the coating is causing an issue or the geometry is not quite right..there is about .5mm - 1mm of additional distance that the lock bar could travel if modified...but that's for another video.

I’ve investigated this matter with two of my Adamas (mini and full-size) versions. I can confirm that your suspension is partially correct. To elaborate, however, the reason why the lockbar doesn’t engage far enough is because BM applies some sort of treatment to the blade, to be able to get the proper adhesion of the Cerakote coating to the blade steel. It seems to also decrease the friction coefficient between the steel bar and the tang of the blade, in the area of engagement. I used a small piece of sandpaper to expose the entirety of the blade’s tang area (where the lock-bar engages/ slides), and it fixed the problem.

I'm thinking batoning with a folder of any kind isn't the greatest idea, except maybe Cold Steels Triad lock. Still, it is concerning that it could possibly happen under any hard use, or self defense even. Who knows.

I think that if I needed to baton with any of those, I would probably just disengage the lock and keep the handle at a 90 degrees angle. It is an interesting investigation none the less

Have mini that fails the same way .I tried a set of "heavy duty " omega springs that helped ,, but under a slightly stronger not really hard - spine whack it failed .My fix - I took tbe knife completely apart and filed each liner - where the axis lock bar rides forward on the blade about 1mm more forward and presto - no more issue . Of course , no one should EVER have to do this - especially to a $200+ knife But it works .

So I have a mini adamas I never batoned with . I dropped in on the floor one day and realized the lock had failed . I thought it might be a fluke so I did a few light spine wacks on my knee and it was definitely a fail . I sent it in and they replaced the whole blade . The new blade has way more meat for the lock bar to catch on and it works great . And the turn around time was also great

I think the real problem here is that Benchmade advertise this model to be a heavy use model, yet even their "lightweight edc" Bugout, which also uses axis lock, but with wonky squeezable scales, can survive WAY higher stress than this no problem. If the Adamas lock is not a design flaw then it doesn't make any sense.

I Did battoning on some downed brush, feathered and made a fire each time with a magnesium rod (my knife looks like trash now) but the lock “HAS NOT DISENGAGED” one time. It did disengage when I first bought it. It had to be worn in a lot. So i flipped it a ton and used minute amounts of 3in1 oil on the mechanism. Maybe it just needs time to wear in since it’s axis lock is so large! I hope that helps.

@@johnnyeas1431I think you're the one missing the point. Cold steel advertises the tri-ad for abuse, and so should be able to handle it. The axis lock was never designed to baton with. Your point is essentially "corvettes should be able to haul trailers because they cost more than a F-150". Price doesn't necessarily correlate with toughness in folding knives, because the vast majority of people aren't going to buy a $250+ folding knife to beat with a log, when a $100 fixed blade will do it better. If you're buying a benchmade folder for batoning, you're an idiot. But if you think batoning should determine a knife's price, well that's pretty idiotic too.

@@digbybowring8362 I actually don't baton with folders or fixed blades. Benchmade advertises the adamas as a hard use "TACTICAL" folder. Real tactical knives can be used for stabbing. Even though I don't baton with knives, the batoning test demonstrates that Benchmade is lying about the Adamas being a "tactical" folder. If the Adamas can't handle light batoning, that means it's not going to handle most tactical situations. If you stab something with the Adamas in a way that extreme force is applied to the spine, it's going to close on your fingers, and then you'll have 2 problems. A knife that lets you down in a dire situation, and I knife that removed your fingers in a dire situation. If you personally like the Adamas, then buy it. But most people who buy the Adamas buy it because they believe Benchmades claim that it's a hard use "tactical" folder. In reality, the Adamas is just a box cutting letter opener with a tactical look because any pressure to the spine is going to close the blade on your fingers.

@@johnnyeas1431 batoning shocks the the crossbar of the axis lock, with a moment force that momentarily loosens the grip of the crossbar in it's slot, causing it to jump out of position. Stabbing something is not going to produce that same combination of forces. This specific combination of shock and moment is why you shouldn't baton with ANY folder, because it breaks lock mechanisms. It pops open axis locks, bends liner and frame locks, deforms lock back knives and even tri-ads are not immune given enough force. Every one of those lock types can be used effectively on a "tactical" knife and will pass stabbing tests.

@@digbybowring8362 You may be right about that. The Adamas folder is one good-looking knife. I just ordered the 375 fixed adamas. I may be adding the adamas folder to my collection in the future. But, time will tell. I'm just not fully sold on the folder as of now.

the axis lock is shit, just have to admit it. I have the bugout, the fancy one with the m390 blade and aluminium scales and the spring broke with no use. the blade play is shocking. I sent it back for repair and it came back worse, they had it drop shut but the blade wobbled left to right and up and down. I tightened the pivot and the side to side went away but the up and down is still present. I won't buy anything benchmade again.

Anyone buying this knife thinking of it as a hard use option, need I remind you that it uses springs?!!! I have had omega springs fail on me before. That's why I always edc a fixed blade with a folder. I don't think folders are meant to be batoned with anyways, that's what God made fixed blades for!!!🤣🤣🤣

actually there are many knives that would not have an issue with the wood I was working on. that is not to say, its a bad idea...which it is. but the adamas should not fail like this. I've never had this problem with another benchmade. It even disengages when being tapped on its spine at the table.

Mini Adamas is strong enough for the tasks for which it is designed. Most likely, batoning is simply not included in this list. I even think that disengage the lock has its advantages, since if the knife is misused, this will avoid damage to the liners.

As I've stated many times, the axis lock has proven it can take this kind of abuse in moderation. But something about the way the blade was shapped makes it fall off the back...some are so bad it can be done just by smacking the back of the blade against a table lightly. This is considered to be their toughest folders...sorry no excuse for bad tang geometry

@@maxlvledc you’re definitely right about garbage geometry on a knife. I know the ‘tests’ are for show under extreme circumstance, but I just don’t get why there are so many batoning videos. I completely agree with this comment. This is a pocket knife. It is not designed for this and should not be expected to withstand it. If people want to baton, they should get a fixed blade. Using a folding knife is asking for trouble.

the point here is that other knives from benchmade can do this with ease...yet the "toughest" one them make is not capable of doing it. In fact this exact one taps open on a table. The connection point between the lock and blade is way too minimal. Also, being a folding knife never stoped a cold steel Triad lock.

Obviously, the adamas does seem to have some kind of lock issue. It’s been documented by DBK 2 years ago and recently again. That being said, your baton skills need work. You’re not taking physics into consideration and it makes me question if you actually do have any survival skills, or this is just for fun for you? Video isn’t bad, it just doesn’t come off with great authority IMHO.

I have at least 5 folders that don't give a shit about battoning (all Demko based locks)..its a lock test after all. I've just heard from a few others that the Adamas can be so bad that it can disengage with much softer hits than I showed. Battoning shouldn't even be done with fixed blades if we are honest..but its a good test of durability.. I do it so you don't have too hehe.
