Thanks for this. My buddy and I are local in NH lakes and fish Winni all the time, but have had very little luck with Lakers since a lot of tips and tricks are done in much diff bodies of water. So we appreciate all the great info and will try them out this year. Cheers!

Thank you! We ordered your Winni box as well. One thing that surprised us was how much smaller your shads were than the ones we were using before. (We primarily stuck to 3/3.5in plastics). And we also fished mostly drop offs. Now just got to go out and find the right spots :) @@BendItFishing

2 inch is where it's at! Especially during ice fishing season! I'll cut them in half sometimes they can be so finicky. Try fishing flats as well

It’s funny I never thought of the dead stick as a technique per say 9/10 time I’m eating a sandwich or retiring or something and your 100 percent right they come right in for some reason I never put the 2 together and actually thought to doit on purpose…. I have noticed I catch a lot less fish when someone is with me jigging in the same shack. Fish will start to chase one then the other and then just give up. But when I’m alone they seam to chase the one jig a lot more.

Happens to me as well the laker gets confused on which is easier to get. Best thing you can do is take turns, and have your buddy reel out of the way or go to bottom.

About a century ago a 42 and 48-pound lake trout were caught ice fishing in 4 feet of water near the shore of the side of a point in a Maine lake. They were caught with dead bait on alders. Though not officially weighted, they were hung in the 5 feet bay window of the town barbershop. I hooked a togue that I lost after 1 1/2 hours of fighting not far from there in 70 feet of water. I estimate it between 40 and 50 pounds. The big ones are out there. But very, very few bother or even know how to catch the true giant (a 5-pound laker is NOT a giant, as I see frequently on the Tube).
@BendItFishing

Ya 5 pounds is not a giant that's a long fight with a laker

Regarding the photo of the inside turn, where exactly are you focusing. I typically fish the humps and want to get more experience with the turns and I can see that there will be some of the same issues as fishing a sharp drop off, so whats the best plan. Thanks again!
@BendItFishing

I start just inside the two points if you were to draw a line, if there's no fish I work my way in
@fishingadventures8004

It’s tough without a sonar and when the lake is a bowl with no hump’s, at that point would you still target them deep or fish a ledge or a cove the lake is loaded with smelt that are on shore but my guess is they move deeper when the sun comes up managed to get 1 this morning but would like to find where they’re all at lol
@BendItFishing
@BendItFishing Жыл бұрын
I would setup right outside the bait or any sort of cove if the lake is a bowl. Also look at the Garmin striker castable sonar it's like 100 bucks for a sonar and syncs to your phone
@fishingadventures8004
@fishingadventures8004 Жыл бұрын

The drop-offs are one of the best places to fish that's where the big trout hang they don't like to like spend energy so they like to disco vertical up and down in the water column for food so they don't have to move

A man who some consider the best ice fisherman in Canada swears by leaving jigging lures suspended in mid water column. Water currents move the lure. He says he catches more togue this way than actively jigging with and without bait.

Im new to ice fishing for lakers, ive always been a pike and rainbow guy. Im finding the lakers and have tons of them on my graph checking out of my lures and dead bait, but they never ever bite. Im dead sticking, jigging, sppons, jigs, jigging rap, white tubes....every thing i can think of to trigger a strike and they just follow it and never hit. Idk what im doing wrong.
@BendItFishing

Sounds like me for the first year targeting Lakers. Lakers can get extremely picky about what they eat. What does your lake have for bait fish?

Sounds like you need to reel faster to play keep away. They'll easily close in on something being reeled up on a 2500 sized reel at a pretty brisk pace. When you get a follow, reel and keep reeling. If they follow and don't eat, gradually increase your retrieve speed. Usually they'll take.
