The landriver defender 110 from the 90s and early 2thoudands are the real defender s these new defender s are not built like the older ones and cannot take an extreme off road beating like the older models that were built for extreme hostile conditions. This is why the older defender s still hold their value and are super expensive to maintain wich is why alot of guys switched to Toyota land cruiser or other off road brands.

Owned 4 Land Rover products over the years (Range Rover, Disco, Defender, and Range Rover Sport), not one problem. Owned multiple Mercedes that had multiple issues. Owned a Toyota that blew a head gasket. I guess some of it comes down to luck of the draw. Best to own anything new today with a warranty (more tech comes with many more potential issues).

I don't know newer cars but I own a 2002 Toyota and a 2007 Land Rover. Most Land Rovers actually have very reliable engine and drivetrain etc. But there's no comparison on the little things. Basically everything plastic in the LR has been mended or replaced. The design is often comically bad.

may I ask which toyota blew the head gasket? Was it Tundra.... at 200k miles? I have not heard of such issue on toyota/lexus trucks/body-on-frame SUVs with a mileage below 150k unless they were extremely abused and lacked proper maintenance.

My wife’s supercharged Range Rover Sport has been rock solid. Zero issues from new to 80k miles. While i do sympathize with the OP, i bet 95% of the people complaining online about reliability have probably never owned them. If reliability was as bad as everyone claims - LR would have been out of business a long time ago.

Not true. My LR4 has been trash. But I like the look of it and deal with issues as they come. The least reliable car I’ve owned. But it was cheaper than a Tacoma and still offered off road ruggedness. It does perform the best off road out of all my cars though. I follow a LandRover forum on Facebook and 90% of the posts are, “this broke how can I fix it.” I still have mine tho 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@monzarace as a JLR Tech, it's often the most babied Land Rovers that cause the most problems, I've had customers that are contractors and drive them all over construction sites with absolutely filthy engine bays and never come in for more than routine service and maybe a minor issue here and there. While Land Rover isn't as off road looking as it used to, don't get it twisted, they're still every bit as capable as they used to be and then some. People also call them unreliable because electrical gremlins, not because it left them stranded somewhere. I've had people come in for silly things more often than something major like powertrain issues. Most of the time if it left the customer stranded it was a drained battery. But of course if the customer paid top dollar for a brand new vehicle it is understandable that they would expect it to be perfect all day every day, however with all the technology it's packing, it's not likely for it to not have any issues at all. Look at Toyota, they used to be bullet proof, with these new ones, not so much as they pack more and more technology into them, technology that has been on Land Rovers for years now.

No matter how great the warranty and the dealer is (I mean, it does, but not for long term ownership when the warranty expires... ) if the vehicle needs to be there often, I can understand wanting to trade it in... Overall, Land Rover is less reliable and cost of ownership is much higher than other brands. I worked at a Land Rover dealer. The amount of catastrophic failures we saw in low mileage and well care for vehicles was shocking. At 60k their suspensions are wasted, electrical failures, coolant leaks. We rarely saw one exceed 150k miles even with every bit of maintenance done. What was hilarious was how many came off the trailer brand new with major problems. That’s what happens when you buy a British built India owned vehicle.

So far 25 to date and counting including first edition 110 D240 no issues and still going. I myself drive a 110 D300 HSE and are just as happy as can be. But still selling the best version LR because of two small mechanical issues that was sorted and you having just the best service from LR is honestly is not a reason to let it go. Sounds like your wife has concerns that the Defender "will eventually" leave her stranded "when" it breaks. That don't sound like positive ownership to me. It may be my ears, but what did it need at 10k miles, coolant lines?🤔 I'd say power steering going out at 150 miles and then something else at 10k is a sign Land Rovers are leasemobiles just like Mercedes, BMW, Volvo and some Audi/Porsche models. I only have anecdotal experience with Land Rover...Coworker bought a 2017 Defender that was 2 years old and under 30k miles at the time, ended up dumping it in less than a year. Then a family member bought the small model, (name escapes me) the one where Victoria Beckham (lol) was involved in the design? That thing was an absolute nightmare almost from the beginning and seemed to spend more time at the dealer than in their garage. They toughed it out until the 4 year lease was up and then ran away from it. They were seriously afraid to drive the thing more than 50 miles from the city they lived in because it contained the only LR dealership within more than 200 miles. That's not what I'd call a pleasant ownership experience. Sure they look cool, have some awesome customizing from the factory, drive great and have fun gadgets...but if you're afraid to take a vehicle made to go off-road even on a vacay that's mostly pavement, what's the point? Land Rover long ago joined Jeep as former military/hardcore outdoor vehicles to expensive (and in some ways fragile) status symbols. Sure both Jeep and LR still have some serious off-road chops, but both are far more likely to leave you needing a very very expensive remote off-road tow than the alternatives from Toyota...or literally anything else.

I have a Jaguar and the warranty/service side has been amazing. People don't realize how generous they are, and that the warranty period also covers routine maintenance. Regular service is covered, and it's not a lease. My F-Pace has only had a couple little quirks (low coolant warning and a sporadic check engine light) that the dealer addressed and explained immediately. QC seems the be JLR's weakest link but they still blow all the US manufacturers away in every aspect, especially when you consider companies like GM and Ford seem to think Explorer's and Tahoe's warrant the same price point as Range Rover's.

Cap. 🧢 LR RR have consistently been far more problematic than most other brands. Yeah, Tundras have issues but the percentage of people bricking their Tundras is far less than those with LR/RR. Imagine, you’ve had these issues in the first 10k miles of ownership. Imagine what it’s like when you’ve had it for 50k. I love LR/RR. Even thought of getting a LR4 as a over landing rig. Went as far as to test drive one. Settled on a GX460 based off the feedback I got from owners. Beautiful suv. But not worth the headache.

Lovely vehicle as long as you have a good dealer, and it’s still covered under warranty. It doesn’t sound like long term reliability would be very good and I think customer satisfaction would drastically change when the paying the Land Rover repair bills.

The fact that your wife wants to get rid of it because the power steering broke down again means she doesn’t feel safe in the vehicle. I know you are saying that it’s not a video speaking badly about Land Rover,Range Rover, Defender lineup but is. Because being a family man and having a child, you understand that you need something safe and reliable and she’s not getting that with that type of vehicle. Thank you Because you have helped me make a very important decision.

You give them a 12 out of 10 for dealer customer service. They HAVE TO have great customer service because their vehicles are so notoriously unreliable that, if it weren't for great service, they would be out of business in the US overnight. I had 3, all awful. I want a Defender - love that vehicle!. I just can't seem to pay that kind of money for a known reliability issue of a brand , and the insurance cost are double what my Wrangler 4xe was. Depreciation is awful, planned factory service is outrageously high. My Jeep was $150 at 30K miles. Land Rover, not sure now but it's about $2000 at the 21K service. PS. At 10K miles there are very few cars or trucks that have major problems. The LR brand is rated the bottom or worst of all brands. Fact. Again, I clearly have loved having them, I had 3, but seriously they can't compare with anything else that's more reliable, and that's everything else.

Coming from the service side of a dealership. I have a question that hopefully someone will answer. What exactly do yall expect from a vehicle, especially a new one? He even knows this and that only vehicles that have not changed in 20 plus years won't have many issues. But they still have them, people just go to side shops or fix it themselves. Yall have got to get out of this consumer mindset. We are adults and we have to move and act accordingly like a business. If you put out a product like a vehicle. If you don't have to do anything to it, you don't make any money. It's not a $500 thing where if it broke you'd just replace it. Nah these are expensive. If you have a warranty, roll with it. Or buy used save some money and pay out of pocket for some things. Not attacking. But I have have been on the receiving end of someone mad about a man made machine and I've been the customer. And Land Rover service is great! I'm on #6

I have a newer Toyota 4RUNNER . Zero problems and has an excellent resale value. You used a bad example to try to drag Toyota through the mud. The turbos are a new thing that everyone wants in on. Toyota built its reputation on non turbo engines. I can afford a Land Rover but they dont seem to be reliable and have poor resale value. Excellent customer service is how they coax you into buying one.

Well, perhaps there is a connection between the incredible buying experience and the future breakdown as in they know it's coming because they know there are serious quality issues still plaguing the brand... I had recently looked at Range Rover and in conversation with a saleswoman, she had strongly recommended I lease and not purchase. She will remain nameless, god bless her, she actually cared about her customers.

Two things we learned : 1) Why do the British drink warm beer? They have Lucas refrigerators. 2) It's hard to make electronics leak oil; but, the British have figured out how to do it.
