Compared Big 3s and Tundra pickups with a 6” bed and a crew cab for 3 adults. Didn’t need a high payload or tow capacity but wanted modern vehicle features and comfort for family use, outdoor leisure, and light duty cargo needs. Bought a ‘25 Tundra, but all good trucks with their own strengths and weaknesses.
@believeornot12 Жыл бұрын
I test-drove the tundra two days ago. The ride is smooth and nice. However, you feel small when sitting in it because the design is bulky inside, especially the front. The show stopper is the delay acceleration. It kicks in after about two seconds after hitting the gas pedal. That isn't good for a truck, or any car for that matter.
@c-grunt6853 Жыл бұрын
The only problem with that spec is once you add the "leather" seats and other options you are in the price of a Limited model which has even more features. I just priced one on Toyota's website as a Limited for 60k dollars.

Finally you start to understand. SR5 is the trim one should buy a Toyota truck in. Anyone who thinks otherwise does not understand Toyota as a brand. I was at dealer recently, they had quite a few tundras including a capstone. The capstone didn’t appeal at all. The more basic trim that was 25k less looked really nice.

Now that the twin turbo V6 has been out for a few years I think Toyota has worked the bugs out of it. I talked to a local Toyota dealer and one of their techs told me that had about half of their 2022 models sold at the dealer come back for failed turbos. But no issues with the 2023 or 2024 models yet. I’d normally prefer the old school NA V8 but this truck looks appealing for sure.

right? newer tech is newer tech. it has shorter oil window, but if you counted in the gasoline, V8 does consume more liquids.

I would say the base SR is the best value at about 40-43k. I know it's detuned to 348 HP but the options are really good. I was very surprised!!! There's not very many videos on them. Mostly because the dealers don't stock them because they're not huge profit makers like the 60-90k trucks. You'd probably have to order one.
@TB-dj8kl Жыл бұрын
I agree I would rather get the sr trim, it seems like a better value. how much power do you need? I just want a basic modern truck with the least amount of features.
@bradsteelguy9140 Жыл бұрын
@@TB-dj8kl I’m thinking the same thing about the power. 437hp and 589 lb/ft of torque? If you’re hauling/towing something that needs that kind of power you need to step up to a RAM Cummins 4500 or 5500 work truck. Not some over powered light truck chassis with 200 options and costs 85k. Everybody wants a Cadillac to do the job of a Peterbilt. It’s not going to happen.

Nice truck. Still too much money! Plus, at only 1,380 lbs of payload, it will have less payload than my 2009 Kia Borrego midsize SUV after I would add a shell/topper to the Tundra. Honda Ridgelines have 1,500 plus lbs of payload. Sure the Tundra will tow more, but not enough usable payload for 1/2 ton truck.

My last few trucks have been Fords. But Toyota got my attention when they refreshed the Tundra. I'm seriously considering Tundra for my next truck. Only a couple of speedbumps in the road.😉 I've checked around and it appears that their higher trim packages are built out of unobtainium. It looks like I'd have to deal with a wait time of around a year if I order a Platinum TRD. But wait! There's more. I can't stand a full size truck with a short box. It's a neutered truck. 5'6" beds are not useful. Even the so called LWB trucks at 6'6" are limiting. I don't get a truck just to be hip and only use it to get groceries. I get a full size truck because I require the capacity and capabilites of one. I pull trailers and I'm always changing something in my yard. Stoopid ADHD! Getting 8 and 10 foot treated 6x6's, gravel, bark mulch, soil, pavers, etc etc would not be as practical with a short box. Yes, yes, I know it "can" be done. But with an unacceptable number of extra trips. Toyota (as of this coming 2024 model year) STILL does not offer their higher trim level trucks in a LWB format. Only in the agravatingly neutered stubby trucks with less carry space. It is limiting. Hey Toyota, please add LWB as an option on all trim levels and do something about those discouragingly loooooong order wait times.

I've always driven chevys. My truck is a 2005 Silverado 5.3 with 250K, bought it new, it's on its 3rd tranny. Pretty good truck overall, it has been taken care of. I'm dropping chevy and ford and ram. The quality of the big 3's are crap, most of the junk is made in mexico now. I've known too many guys that have new trucks that are crap. At least the Tundra's are built in San Antonio. Actually more American parts than the big 3 use. I'm buying Tundra next time. The base SR is really affordable and has a bunch of standard equipment. If I had to buy a real work truck it would be a RAM 4500 flatbed with Cummins. Mainly because I owned a 2013 and put 200k on it with no major problems and the Cummins are pretty good engines. Don't want a powersmoke or duratrash. There are bunches of powersmokes parked at the diesel injection repair place i drive by everyday.

I picked one up 3 weeks ago. In all honesty an SR5 with the TRD Offroad package is all you need. It has the mechanical upgrades and modes for offroading. Most of us loft the trucks and change wheels. That money you pay to get a basic limited model you can do alot to the SR5. Like put in a premium sound system, wheels, tires, lift kit, and an exhaust. I got a decked out 2024 SR5 in solar octane. I paid about 65k walkout with all the fees included. It has both the offroad package and convinced package so i get a warns while driving to avoid collisions. The bonus was leather seats which i wasnt not expecting from an SR5. I know these trucks dont sound too good. But hey theyre better on gas and theure going to last a while as long as you take care of it.

Ben, have you been able to compare the standard suspension to the adaptive variable "air" suspension? AVS is proving hard to find around the Dallas area. I tow a boat occasionally, so wondering if it's worth the added effort to run down an AVS variant. My hope would also be a smoother daily commute. Thanks for your efforts! I enjoy your channel.
@jimbov23 Жыл бұрын
I drove both and opted to go without the rear air mainly because I live in cold climate and air components can have issues from time to time. While I know Toyota's air kits are pretty reliable, my neighbors have trucks from the big 3 and their air components are always having issues up here in the colder climates. Daily riding, I would say its a pinch smoother over certain bumps but the 5 link rear standard suspension is really nice and makes daily driving a luxury feel. I would say that if you are towing around the 9000 - 12000lb range on a regular basis, the air will help with the squat but below that the squat is minimal and you'll have less things to fail.

With all the issues the 2024 Tundra is having…..like blown engines and crappy transmissions and interior rattles that sound like a marble in a tin can, I highly DOUBT the 2024 Tundra is the best truck. Getting rid of the bulletproof 5.7 was a huge mistake. I knew 16 years ago when I bought my truck it would get lousy gas mileage, but gas mileage wasn’t why I bought my truck. I bought it because of the 5.7…..the capability of towing 10,800 lbs and the comfort level. Mine has the XSP package with Leather seats, power everything, and so much more. I only use Amsoil full synthetic oils. My truck has never let me down. It’s currently got 133,682 miles. I also love having a key, and no silly looking iPad stuck to the dash.
