I think it's fair to say that Benn Beckman comes off as a guy that doesn't pull any punches when giving his opinion. It's easy for us to view Ace in this super positive light, because, through Luffy's conception of him, Ace is a big brother, a natural leader, and an amazing human with limitless potential. Luffy looked up to Ace, as the flashbacks showed us. To him, he seemed infallible. In the eyes of a realist, and a well-traveled experienced pirate, however, Ace was a mess. He lived a very reckless life without much purpose in it beyond deeply desiring to find a place where he belonged. Which he didn't really find until he met Whitebeard. Some people might be put off by Beckman's observation, but I see it as great writing.

In the end, Ace is just like Whitebeard. A great human being. While Luffy is just like Roger. A great pirate. One pair was directionless, extremely caring, and desired a family more than anything. The other was obsessed with one goal of being the Pirate King.

@@ohmangoddamn1986 actually, roger's goal was just to turn the world on it's head. when roger started his journey, I'm pretty sure the concept of pirate king was not a thing, nor was the one piece. roger made both those things. i think he just wanted to make a mark on the world, then happened upon a poneglyph, found out he could "hear" what was on it.

Aside of not making any sense in insight, everything Beckman says here speaks bad writing. He said Ace destroying the world order including the 4 emperors isn't pirate like... Okay, so Luffy isn't a pirate if I get it well, because destroying the etablishment is part of his goal to become the PK. By the way, who the hell is Beckman to define the pirate's life ? Roger and Whitebeard had a totally different goal and a totally different view of the pirate's life. It didn't prevent them from achieving what they did. Ace's mouth back then was closer to Roger (putting the world upside down) while his heart was closer to Whitebeard (a place to belong). The rest about his limitation is the kind poor so-called forshadowing you expect in these kind of badly written prequel. (Kid will be a mere fleet captain). History gives him reason since his character is actually written in insight to look clever -- while it's actually stupid because nothing led to such conclusion. I would have loved him to meet a young Whitebeard to laugh.

What??! Ok after watching this, I gotta say, Ben Beckman is amazing. He encapsulated everything I’ve ever thought about Ace, but couldn’t necessarily phrase accurately. To my fellow Hunter x Hunter fans, remember Hisoka vs Castro. The reason Castro lost was because he didn’t focus in his area of expertise. I feel like the same applies to Ace here. In terms of what made him happy, he found everything he had ever wanted in Whitebeard and his crew. As far as his dreams and ambitions go, he never bothered to seek what it was he was meant for in this world. Essentially, he settled for operating under Whitebeard Ace was a good pirate. I don’t think Ben Beckman disagreed that Ace was a good pirate. However, because of where his mindset was at, he was limited to one ship. The real question is, was Ace happy with chasing greatness or chasing happiness? For Ace, it was acceptance and happiness, and there is nothing wrong with that. I think Benny was 100% spot on in his assessment. If you ask me personally, Ace was never destined to be a pirate because of who he was as an individual. He used piracy as a means to gain purpose in life, which is something that applies to a lot of us in real life, but ultimately that wasn’t the road for him to maximize his potential, just like Castro. Sorry for the long comment. I kinda got passionate about this.
@ohmangoddamn1986
@ohmangoddamn1986 3 жыл бұрын
Bingo. Ace was a near perfect human. However, he was not a near perfect pirate like Luffy is. Luffy is the perfect fit for the pirate king. However, Luffy is not nearly as moral or justice seeking as Ace. Ace wanted to be a pirate for the namesake of it alone. And in the end, it was his own downfall. He attacked Blackbeard why? To avenge a fallen comrade. He attacked Akainu why? To protect the name of Whitebeard. He died how? Saving his little brother. Ace is a hothead version of simply a great human being. Hes TOO caring to be pirate king, simply put. His want in life (eventually) was to have companions and family. And guess who that mirrors? Whitebeard. While Luffy mirrors Gold Roger. the perfect human vs the perfect pirate.

Ben beckmenn is obviously wrong. Because his comment about ace in 2.30-3.30 is literally what luffy is except luffy wants to be the pirate king (ace also wanted to be the pirate king until he met whitebeard, didn't he?). Luffy is doing what ace wanted to do. He already destroyed warlord system, the yonko system is in the process and the WG will be destroyed by him in future. Yes, luffy wants to be the pirate king, but even that is different that what everyone else thinks about pirate king. To luffy, being the pirate king means being the free-est pirate on the sea. I don't think any other supernova think this way. So, according to ben beckmenn, luffy isn't a true pirate and only will be a captain of a single ship. This is true but ben is being extremely narrow minded here and it doesn't math up his high IQ. Because roger was the captain of only one ship and afawk, shank is also captain of only one ship. LOL. Or does he think that being secretly allied with the WG like his captain did, makes a person a true pirate?

The problem with Beckman's analysis is that the reason he placed Ace within the revolutionaries, is the same reason he wanted to be a pirate. He wanted his name to be not associated with anyone or thing other than himself. He couldn't have done that if he'd joined someone else. Think of it as in the business world. Being an entrepreneur is the only way to make yourself renowned for nothing but your own empire. Joining as an employee and working up the corporate ladder to become the CEO of say, Microsoft, makes you renowned not for your empire, but for someone else's. Joining the revolutionary army would NOT allow Ace to achieve his goal at that time, which was to make the entire world acknowledge him for his own feats, rather than for being the son of Roger or something. This, by the way, is a strong parallel between Ace and Zoro that I don't see explored that much. Both were/are men of incredible ambition and potential, and indeed could have become emperors of the sea in their own rights. But instead they, at some point down the line, made the choice of sacrificing their dreams for someone else's, when they had to pick one of the two.

I think it’s an interesting outlook on Ace as flawed character. You are right he was both right and wrong about Ace. He carried such a heavy burden that he never realized until the bitter end just how loved he really was. Whitebeard was such an impact on him I think if he didn’t feel indebted to the man he may not have tried so hard to get back at Blackbeard. Perhaps if Ace never knew who his father was until he was older he may have turned out different. Something to add is that if Sabo hadn’t “died” Ace personality may have been more brash then it was because he purposely took those lessons from Makino because he was too harsh on Luffy and realized he had to do better. Ace wanted to be free of his father’s name but also wanted to be have that fatherly love he was deprived of. Such a tragic character honestly and one that is very relatable. It would have been interesting to see what kind of character he would have been if he had lived and gotten passed his issues with his father. It may have been good for him to have actually sat down with someone like Rayleigh even if he still hated his father afterwards at least he would have known how the man really was. I think fanfic does a good job exploring a what if situation though. It’s so also sad that he never knew Sabo lived before he died.

Yup. Its interesting. Ace is certainly flawed, but Ace is the closest thing in One Piece to the perfect HUMAN. However, he just wasnt the perfect PIRATE. His desire for family ended up being stronger than any of his pirate goals despite his raw strength and potential. And thats perfectly fine because that directly mirrors Whitebeard, who we know did not care about the One Piece and was content just having his family.

I think Ben’s quote highlights the different between a conqueror and a leader. With CoC Haki it’s easy to confuse the two. Ben saying he won’t ever be the captain of anything more than 1 ship is a pretty damning indictment of Ace at this point. Something he outgrows after meeting WB

I think Benn Beckmann was right, and we are missing out on a crucial point. What is the difference between a Pirate and a Revolutionary? In my opinion, and correct me if I am wrong, a Revolutionary has a purpose of bringing down the Celestial Dragons and consequently changing the world order. While a Pirate's main drive is to "gain" something, whether it is Power, Freedom, Money or whatever. Pirates takes. If you think about it, what Benn Beckmann said may sound harsh, but could be interpreted as that Ace might have reached the full scale of his caliber in the Rev Army but he limited himself as a Pirate because his aims and his profession does not coincide (unless you are a Straw Hat and you have plot armor).

Not sure how you determine a true pirate in One piece, however Ben was right about Ace on most points. Not all but most. Ace character is someone that didn't managed to realize his true potential, he died way before his time unfortunately. He was strong, smart and courageous but also naive, hot-headed and clouded in his decision. The moment he decided to go after Blackbeard himself kind of sealed his fate. I know this hurts slightly but its the truth, I do feel that when Ace join the Whitebeard pirates. His had finally chose his path and its was the best decision he ever made in his life. If Ace had made it pass the time skip, he would have been even more impressive.

@Zero Gravity ?? I am sorry I think you misread my comment. I said above (Benn was right about Ace on most points. Not all but most). As for the wrong parts, I belief BDA explained well what Benn was not right about. But simply putting, Benn had his own idea of what would make a good or true pirate in his word. His thinking of Ace is slightly narrow minded abit. Now Ben got a lot right just by observing Ace during their meeting, which show he is very intelligent. But he did not know Ace truly, which means there were qualities of Ace he wasn't aware of.

When ace left the village he had no vision. He just left to become something who he wasn't. Ben Beckman was right. But along the way whwn he met whitebeard he learned that he had no aim no vision, he was just wondering. Whitebeard gave him a cause, a reason to be alive. Ace had a very strong but strange character. That is why I guess oda had to kill him. Otherwise in the future he would had to clash with luffy and shanks. He was a broken character only because of his bloodline.

He was directionless and fatherless in a sense. When he met Whitebeard he found what he thought he never needed, a father, who gave him direction and love. It makes his death more impactful, he couldn't bear hearing anyone speak ill of the man who gave him everything. Beckman was right in many ways, but he was just a man critiquing from the sidelines. Whitebeard was the man willing to shape Ace's potential.
@SnowyWolborg

That's exactly what it was! As another commenter said, it's easy to see Ace in a positive light because we look at him from Luffy's lens. But Beckmann didn't have that bias. He correctly pointed in that Ace has a lot of potential. But, he was stuck at "good" and wouldn't ever reachthe pint of "great" because he was running around with a hollow goal.

I knew going into things that Ace had... An expiration date. But I never expected to fall in love with this character the way I have. My big brother died when I was 17, you could say at the neglect of the government, others say it was his own arrogance. I reacted exactly the same way Luffy did... But it took me years to come to terms with it. I wish I'd had a Jinbe to slap me around a bit sooner. And I have dealt with plenty of Ben Beckmann's with choice words to say about him and what he 'could have been'. I guess my point is that Oda wrote a character that feels so undeniably human... Because we're all flawed.

No where in those statements did Beckman say he Hated Ace ffs! He just pointed out that Ace's goals (at that time) would have been better served in the Revolution Army. You can say the exact same thing about Law. Law has no interest in being Pirate King, he wants to take down the world government, it's no wonder he teamed up with Luffy who declared war on the WG.

Beckman has crazy perception haki. This is why kizaru considered him a threat. He knows where he would be shooting at before kizaru would be there. Its possible he even knew what shanks saw in luffy and maybe where everything will end up. With ace i think he was aware of the dead end for ace and as the second of shanks, confirmed shanks fear with teach. The irony is if beckman somehow pointed him towards the revolutionary army he would find find sabo. If his perception haki was so strong this could also imply where ace could have gone to fulfill his needs or why beckman thought as much.

It doesn't bother me, because ben beckmann was right: by thay point, ace had no clear objective, just a rough idea of what he wanted. He was searching for his place in the world, just like luffy, but knowledge was a burden to him, unlike luffy. Which brings me to parallel we can make with another character: Do Flamingo. They both wanted to burn the world, while also secretly searching for their place in it. Doffy was burdened by even more knowledge by ace, and that's a key factor in the development of their characters. By the initial point of their career, with their crew there was a "blind leading the blind" type of situation: they both were blinded by hate and didn't knew exactly what they wanted to do, other than just pay back the hate they received for no apparent (to them) reason. But while ace had luffy, sabo, garp, dadan and the bandits to care for him, doffy had a crew only fueling his "fire". And then it comes whitebeard, the one showing there's love in this world other than just hate. Although he was his rival, he showed no sign of hate for roger: I think that was also a turning point for ace, not so much about accepting roger but rather by witnessing there's a way to fight without being guided only by hate. Do flamingo didn't had a figure like that, his crew let him had his way in his boss game as a kid, so he never found his way. He returned to dressrosa and put up all that facade only to make people accept and love him, but ultimately mistaking his way through it, just how ace was using the wrong way to make people accept and value him for who he was, rather than being "the son of someone": in the end his way was indeed to be the son of someone, one of the sons of WB.

Ben was right about ace not knowing his place, the end goal in his life was to know whether it was good that he was born, that he himself could make a difference and not be judged by his heritage, so ben was not correct about him being like a revolutionary, he didnt want to bring the world into chaos, defeating pops was just a challenge for himself, not an end goal, just like how luffy talks about beating all 4 yonkos, but all in all, I have to ask did ace find his truth before dying?? I think it took the war of the best to make ace realise that there are people that will fight the whole world just so that he could live, it's a shame that he couldn't cherish it for long

Well, there is another way to look at this, Benn Beckman met Ace when he wasn't part of Whitebeard's crew yet, in that early stage Ace was, indeed, nothing. he didn't have a real dream until he met Whitebeard and vowed to make him the king. so, when he first met Shanks' crew, he indeed was NOT a real pirate since he lacked the ambition of one

Hell if he knew his reasoning he could dislike him even more for all we know . For Whitebeard it was not a big deal. For someone like Benn or Shanks ... It could be even a bigger sign of stupidity... "So you want to do All of that... Because you have daddy isues?"
@Meshifuari
@Meshifuari 3 жыл бұрын
@Tyriek Craddock Even with the right Guidance from Wb and his entire crew Ace was doing his own thing. He didnt listen to Wb when it mattered. Brago mentioned in the video how one of his friends told him that ACE HAS NOT MATURED at all since the time he was a child. And he himself as Ace fan agrees with it. The thing is ACE had a proper Guidance from several people before... Makino, Dadan, Garp to extend, even some of his spade pirates and of course Whitebeard. The problem with Ace is that he wouldnt listen to anyone. He always was giving it to his anger which is even clear in Ace's novel. How long would we had to Wait for him to mature? As Benn has stated He Had No Potential, he wouldnt have MATURED. He wouldnt have become a Yonko, no matter how much time you would give him, he would eventually fall.
@Meshifuari
@Meshifuari 3 жыл бұрын
@Tyriek Craddock The thing is I agree that he would have a lot of potential if he were to get rid out of his anger but the main point is that he would never get rid of it. No matter what would have happened. Benn literally predicts it with the whole "zero potential" quote.

If that quote is canon then Ben Beckman shouldn't like Luffy either; he also acts more like a Revolutionary by topple Warlords one after the other and going after the 4 Emperors. It's the exact same behaviour pattern he finds at fault with Ace. He doesn't act like a pirate at all, even less so than Ace since he doesn't kill anyone, he's actually even saving people and countries. Just like a gladiator Revolutionary. Luffy is the least piraty pirate in the four seas.

I think you're sort of reaching here, it was just in conversation he gave a few points, to prove a point. I don't think he ultimately gave a complete list of complete things he would say makes a pirate. He never said anything about Blackbeard or Luffy either, he specifically said the person in front of him cares more about his own self image, than anything else. In a sense, a Pirate doesn't really have a goal to change the Government, they're very self serving power hungry people who just want to do what they want to do, not stop someone else from doing what they want to do, so Ace really was never a "Pirate" in that sense. Secondly, a Pirate is someone I don't think would limit their own choices, or think they only have one either. Doesn't sound like HATE either, just a character analysis. And lastly, it doesn't matter that Benn doesn't know why ACE makes those choices or the life he has lived, everyone has some internal reasoning, the point is that he is going to live the life he said he would.

This is the first time replying to your videos. I love your content and analysis. You really bring a great prospective and view point. I have not read the novel. I do plan to but i have a point to raise. Benn Beckman when talking about Ace was probably in my opinion comparing Ace to Luffy. Everything he said seemed to be spot on but in contrast to Luffy, talking about the next king of the pirates potential and his brother, it brings more context to what he said. From witnessing young Luffy and his carefree Gol D Roger like attitude, he could tell Ace was limiting himself. Where his brother would do anything for the adventure, freedom and just what it truly (to Benn Beckman) means to be a pirate. Luffy as a kidd stabbed his face just because, ate a fruit just because, defended shanks just because. No logic. No reasoning, pure pirate chaos. At that moment his goal was to be a pirate, a great pirate and very free. Where Ace as you said had a goal, a purpose and so much more anguish. And a man like Beckman could see his true calling. Thats so amazing to analyse and be so spot on. I Love Benn even more for that character analysis.
