Just received my Xsr several weeks ago. Am 69 years old, having been riding for 53 of them. What a hoot this bike is! I had spent 20 years riding my ‘99 R1, and on that bike you always felt that you couldn’t use all its performance on the road, only on the track. The XSR relieves you of that psychological constraint. The triple sounds great and the tech makes for an amusing and competent ride. Love the bike.

To Jinx you sir, but in all your years of writing. Have you ever gone down? Or seriously injured. what tips Or Advice, would you give to a new rider?

@@VariationMachine Eric, I've never been injured while writing-my pens aren't that sharp. While road racing my RD350 in the late 70s/early 80s over a 5 year period, I crashed about a half dozen times. The cost of doing business in that arena in those days (the tires of the day were crap, and 20 somethings think they're invincible). Also high sided my R1 and broke a collar bone-high horsepower, brand new rear tire, 40 degree day, and a fresh carb rejetting combined with optimistic throttle application. My advice to a new rider is to carefully ratchet up one's speed commensurate with ability and confidence. Be ever vigilant with respect to situational awareness and don't daydream while riding. Always look where you want to go-the bike tends to go where you're looking. Take a new rider training course/take an on track roadracing course to pick up control skills. Ideally, one should learn to ride in the dirt - skill acquisition is quicker and safer. Enjoy the ride!

@@VariationMachine Gone down while writing??? There's a joke in there somewhere!😀 As to going down while riding, yeah. While roadracing in the late 70s, early 80's I did so a number of times. On the street, highsided on cold tires and broke a collar bone. But, isolated incidents. As to advice, the obvious one is to be ever vigilant about your surroundings. Also, as you approach a corner look where you want to go, because your body follows your eyes. Drive "offensively", a term coined by Nick Ienatsch (look him up-former magazine editor turned training school guru). Summarizing, drive defensively with a plus-go a little bit faster than the surrounding cars so that you are in charge of your surroundings. Always try and put yourself into a gap whereby you are not closely sandwich by other vehicles, who may or may not be paying attention. I really suggest you look up Nick Ienatsch-there's a huge amount of riding safety editorial material on the internet and in books. Good luck!

Kawasaki z900rs is a classic motorcycle with modern handling, build quality, and reliability. And I just love the fact that it come with no electronic intervention whatsoever. A pure riding experience, just you and the motorcycle. Love it.

@@cammy9r Thank you. Yes, ABS and TC are useful tools no doubt. But then, a tool that I am using should help me achieve my goals more effectively. In other words, it should serve by interests. I don't think it's always the case when the tool has a mind of its own. An electronic throttle makes it so I'm not in complete control of my own vehicle. I do not like that!

@@cammy9r I frankly do not care about emissions. Carbon capturing can solve a lot of the problems. If done right it may or may not act as a rentable energy. For me the problem is people want new tech for the sake of progress, don't you think?

Obvious from the start which bike you prefered - listing various yamahas' (FZR's) you had enjoyed in the past. Far from being 'fake' I reckon the kwaka is more authentic to its design brief. Prospective buyers of the kwaka don't want or need the tech available on any number of modern bikes.

Had the Red/Silver version. That thing was a MONSTER. It would do a 100mph in a blink. You could be in 5th doing 40 and twist the throttle...it would grunt and then WHAM!

Back in 2005 I bought an absolutley 'mint' GPz.900-R - (the "A.8" final version) in Black/Charcoal/Bronze I still have it, but, it's by far THE most uncomfortable bike I've ever owned - (I was used to older ergonomics) Every time I'd go out on my bikes (Z.1000-J, CB.900-F & GS.1000-E) I'd be out like 9-11 hours at a time (all day !) The latter two (I also still own both as well as the GPz) NEVER as in were NEVER uncomfortable to ride (hrs) That Yamaha trick tho' it might be, is WAAAAY too ugly for me - I'd choose the Kawasaki instead

I rode both the Kawasaki Z900 and the Yamaha XSR900, while I never shortlisted the Z900RS. I picked the XSR, because it is so light and thus agile plus it comes along with a full range of gimmicks such as quickshifter, cruise control etc. I haven't regretted my choice a single instant yet.

If the bike pushes most of your buttons as you ride it, does it really matter what it looks like in your garage (or on the street corner?) There are some colors I would hesitate to purchase on a car/truck, but as I drive down the road, I rarely think about the color of my vehicle, just if its running ok... . Still, I know outward appearance has a factor for me in what decisions I make as to what I purchase. Just the way things can be ... .

I've been riding for 44 years, and have had 11 motorcycles. which includes 6 Yamaha's. I currently ride and travel on a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300a, which I bought used with 2832 miles on the clock, and that now has over 63,500 miles on. I just absolutely am in love with my current Yamaha, and am considering getting an XSR as a second bike for having fun on. It will be a sad day, one day when I'm too old to ride. Riding my FJR brings me absolute bliss, even when the weather is rainy, and I have to put on a rainsuit, the joy I get from riding my FJR is indescribable. Looking at the horsepower to weight ratio of the XSR should give anyone an idea of what fun they're in for. 117 horsepower with a 425 pound chain driven bike, and a quick shifter is a recipe for ear to ear perma-grin. My FJR by comparison puts 127 horsepower down at the rear wheel, but weighs well over 600 pounds dry, and it's still a ball to open that throttle from a stop light and leave everything else in my mirrors. Plus the mid-range power on the inter-state highway here in the states always makes me smile. At 65 mph, no need to downshift to pass and get ahead of a group of cars. Just roll the throttle ever so slightly, and hold on, and literally in about 3 seconds you're approaching the triple digit mark. Remind me to send a love letter to Yamaha. I do have to say Bennet that this XSR reminds me of one of my past rides, and that was an RD400. Light, zippy, and flickable.

I am in my early 60''s and currently have a 2019 Gen 3 FJR1300 - great bike - bags of power everywhere and does everything effortlessly. I also had an RD400 which I bought in 79 - it was an absolute hooligan bike. I'd also like to get something a bit smaller just for shorter rides. I like the Triumph T100/T120/Speed Twin and was also looking at a Z900RS . . . . but this Yamaha now has my interest.

I think you've missed the point. The Kwak is a truly beautiful remake of a 70s classic and the Yam, which may technically be a better bike, looks like a dogs dinner that's crashed into a wall. Make your own choice on what you want.

I think both bikes are going to please plenty of riders. The Yam will appeal to a younger, sportier rider with an appreciation of the retro vibe ( which is all the rage for the younger set ) , while the Zed will appeal to those that were actually there to remember and appreciate the charms of that era

I think your right, I’m of the z900 era, but still love the bite and more aggressive looks and ride of the XSR. The Kawa is a nod to that era, very nice, but having a sorta copy doesn’t appeal. I do have an original RD 2 stroke, the real deal. However, aren’t we lucky to have the choice !

Spot on. I bought the XSR because I wanted an MT09 but hated the look of it. I wasn't around for the 80s, nostalgia was not a factor. Japanese motorcycle design has really gone off the deep end in recent years, I think many of us simply appreciate anything that doesn't look like it came in a happy meal.

@@stubbingtonmarigold3032 There will be private companies making them. I took a (rd250) seat to an upholsterer and got them to put in new shaped foam and make a new cover with an old style cafe racer hump.

The Z900 looks nicer, but I'd have the the xsr900 over it - I like my bikes to do many things.....but they have to be engaging. Love Simon's reviews 👍

As the Z1000 was the first big bike I rode (a friend owned it actually, but he's too drunk to ride safely home from the club), the last bike I actually owned prior expatriating was the Z900, the purchase of my Z900 RS 2022 was a no-brainer. Whether the Yammi might be better (in some minor aspects) than the Kwaki is of no concern at all to me 😁

All I can is I’ve owned my Z900RS since 2018 and my heart still skips a beat when I open the garage door and see it there. It’s the Jaffa colour which is the best colour imo. I’ve done 26,000 kms on it and still enjoy everything about it. Yes, the OEM tyres are crap and I changed to Bridgetone S22 which transform the handling along with proper suspension setup. I guess the Yamaha is superior as far as rider aids go, I fitted a Translogic quickshifter to mine but it is upshift only. Personally I think the Yamaha looks ugly, but looks are subjective I guess. If I was getting a Yamaha it would be a 2022 MT10 SP. My Kawasaki is a keeper.

Definitely subjective. I think the yamaha looks stunning. The z900 is lovely enough, i guess, but nothing bold or original in the looks depth, IMO.

@@SZA001 its obvious to me they were going for the same silotte as cafe racer or road racers with box tail section the riders seat is cut into .....but without at least a bolt on color matched hard shell hiding the pillion seat and creating a tail fairing effect it just does not jibe with anyone that missed what Yamaha was trying for....I'll be surprised if Yamaha or aftermarket does not very soon offer either a solo seat with box tail section or a cover that gives that effect....problem with those would be losing the pillion and not having a place to strap a seatbag too ...cause if the cover was painted you would probably not want to strap anything to it for fear of marring the finish

@@SZA001 To me it looks like Yamaha was simply mimicking the sillouette of an old road race bike as if it were a solo seat with a fiberglass cowl section the seat being cut into it ...but i dont think some people understand this and all they see is a wierd seat...Yamaha I think SHOULD have either provided a paint matched cover for the passenger seat to make it actually appear as a real solo seat OR more practically could have simply colored the seat covering back there to match the paint and graphics...speaking of which IF the bike were jet black it might be easier to understand and get

I own the first generation of the XSR and tried the Z900. They are very different bikes, even more different than they look. The XSR is nimbler, lightier, more sporty and cheaper. The Z is more elegant, more classic and has higher quality perception. I would choose the Yamaha for the dynamics and the Kawasaki for the looks.

Whilst working at a big dealership, everyone looked at the kwak and most walked past the yam paying it very little attention. I think that sums up their appeal. What would you prefer to see when you opened the garage door?

@@Mike-er7ym I believe it's called neo-retro. It has very little to do with nostalgia and more with reinterpreting retro styling in a modern way. Honda's done it successfully with their CB650R/CB1000R, so has Husqvarna with the Svartpilen and Triumph with the Trident. I don't understand why the XSR and the Z900RS are constantly lumped in with each other, they aren't at all in the same category, IMO. I own the Yamaha, I bought it purely because I wanted an MT09, but hated the bug-eyed cyclops look of it. I'm 29, I wasn't around for the 80s. No nostalgia involved. So far, the only people who have asked me about it or shown any interest were in their 20s and 30s. I'm sure that would be waaaay different on a Z900rs, I think Kawasaki is targeting a much older audience who are buying the bike for very different reasons.

I’m an older rider 62 so I remember the first Z1 in 1972 and the Kawasaki has captured the look very well 👌 so it would be the one I would choose 😁 I don’t particularly like the look of the New XSR900 (although it’s much nicer than the MT09!) but It will probably appeal to a younger demographic 😊 That being said I applaud Yamaha for making it for such an affordable price (£1000 less than the Kawasaki) especially with that brilliant engine and plethora of electronics including quick shifter and blipper …good job ☺️

I have a 2021 Z900RS and love it, it a great looking retro bike and the build quality is excellent. I think the XSR is more targeting the cafe racer brigade, so the styling just didn't appeal to me personally. Still, I am sure owners of either of these great bikes will be happy with their choice.

I tested the z900RS. Excellent riding position, even for my 6'5"frame. Outstanding build quality. Well behaved, I liked the need to wind it up. But powerful and sporty enough. I should've bought it, but as I was returning after injuries, I got a used, but nice V-Strom 650. As for the XSR, the looks have improved, the chassis is more sensible. It really didn't need more power though. Buying now I'd get the Kawasaki, but any of them are good for Sunday thrills and more.

Thank you guys!!! I just picked up my XSR 900 on Monday....loved it from the first second. The ergonomics are just on point for me (176cm). Can`t wait to feel the pure power after 1000km 🙂. I drove the MT09 last year to see if I lke the CP3...and the CP3 is exactly how you guys described it...engaging and thrilling !! The chassis is so agile and light to handle like a bicycle. Up to now I had a YZF750 which is already a nice handling bike from the 90`s but nothing to compare to the XSR. I like the Z too but I have been always Yamaha guy and for that price a bargain. Got my XRS900 in September and bought it after watching Chads launch review. His little face couldnt stop smiling. I had ridden the Kawasaki previously and loved it but I didnt want one where I wanted the XSR. I have no complaints with my choice.

I think that the typical R900RS customer would be older and say "why on earth do you need a quick-shifter?" On another recent article I responded to someone who asked that very question. They originally believed that young people were too stupid to properly use a clutch!

I'm a long term Yamaha man but just on looks I'd go for the Z. I never really saw the xsr as being retro. Just a variation on the mt09/ tracer platform. As said the dash on the xsr looks small and I prefer the twin clocks look. I did try the old xsr that belonged to a mate and found it felt quite small, but then I am 6'2".not fussed about quick shifters, abs, traction control or any of that other stuff and if I had it it would probably just get left on one setting and I guess I wouldn't be the only one to do that.

It's definitely that the Yamaha XSR900 2022 is a better tech because its a model changed from the previous model. I mean the Z900rs remains the same since 2018... The XSR is already a second generation. Fair enough to win this competition. I like the xsr900 2022 too. Therefore if you compare 900rs to XSR900 2018... Kawasaki is a clear winner i believe. No competition looks wise, the Kawasaki is gorgeous. The Yam just isn't. I own the old XSR900 model but had it re-styled by Velocity Moto to give it the RD350LC look. Yamaha have lost their way in the styling department but undoubtedly make fun, reliable bikes.

Thanks for a great review. Interesting perspective on the Kaw's design brief: While I agree with it needing some tech updating - quick shifter, cruise at least! - the design to me is not to be a sort of "fake", but an embracing of the design aesthetic from that era that is, frankly, still quite attractive. It's not a hankering for something nostalgic. Nothing wrong with that. All said, though, I am not entirely sure these two would be seriously cross-shopped. Different use target, really, and I think they both hit their mark.

I bought the Z, and was in fact cross shopping the two, but in the end, I was after a true classic bike look and feel and the XSR just didn’t have it. But damn the tech and riding features sure are nice. Maybe just means I need both!

@@DeathComesSwiftly same. Got the z over the xsr because that xsr to be frank did not look anything classic to me except for its round headlight. It has way too much plastic on the outside. If I wanted an actual sport bike that “performs” like a monster on the road then I’d just get myself a proper sport bike but I just got the z because it truly resembled bikes from the past but with modern safety features that I would actually need on the street.

I love that you guys did this review! I had been looking at so many videos on both of these bikes prior to making a purchase but rarely did I see anything as well made and directly comparing the two bikes I was considering. I ended up with the Z900RS 50th anniversary edition which is a real stunner to look at and a true pleasure to ride. I only liked parts of the XSR, and one part was definitely not the looks. It just seems like bits are missing off the bike, but at the same time, really nice little details here and there. It’s just a little quirky for me. But the color and finish is gorgeous and I don’t really usually like blue. I agree with all the complaints about the Z though, a QS both up and down would make this a fantastic machine. The throttle cables and lack of QS seems to be nostalgia for its own sake and could easily be modernized and wouldn’t take anything away from the bike. I wouldn’t change my decision, I love classic 70s muscle bikes, and cars from that era BUT it certainly does make me want to find a Yamaha bike that uses this CP3 platform. Cheers mates. disagree on your assessment of the z900rs. It’s not lazy. It’s authentic. You cant discount it for being TOO genuinely retro when that’s its whole thing. It does it better than the yam considering it’s complete and not just dressing like the yammy. That said I wish that kawasaki had more options And models.

Great head to head. Certainly has made me take a second look at the XSR (which I really didn’t like the look of at first, but it is now growing in me). My last bike was a Z900rs and I chose it because I felt it was more “authentic” than a Speed Twin! Interesting that Simon felt the XSR is similarly more authentic or maybe genuine than the Z is. I was tempted to get another Z900RS but I think I’m going to have to give the Yamaha a try! Thanks for the tip!

Yes it's odd, some people seem to look at the z900rs as an attempt to replicate the Z1 - and some then go on further to bemoan the lack of twin suspension and 4-4 pipes - whilst others (including me) see it as a 'retro' that isn't trying to be a replicate, rather, simply adopt strong styling cues in a modern dress - and prefer it that way. It's not trying to do what Triumph does with a number of their modern classics. Ultimately we have to have an emotional connection with our bikes, and whereas I quite fancy the RD style xsr which speaks more to my era, I can't get over the looks of the new one, despite the bike being more fun than the zed in other respects. I kinda felt that Adam, more than Simon, was speaking as much from an emotive perspective as from a technical perspective, and was perhaps unduly harsh on the zed!

The Kawasaki is clearly the sexiest animal. Actually, it should be noted that Kawasaki owns 49 percent of Bimota. Where do you think that chassis came from? This Z900RS is a form of art. The Rolls Royce of Japanese bikes. The Bimota KB-2 that you would ride wearing a tux. I know...I own one.

Trying to say the Yamaha, in any way, looks better than the Kawi makes no sense to me. Mentioning the build quality of the Yam without mentioning the loose cables running up to the bars that look like they are wrapped in electrical tape? The headlight that looks like a poorly chosen aftermarket part? Agree with most of the rest of what was said. Still, these bikes ARE about looks and I guess it's subjective in the end.

Really like these comparison reviews. Been riding since the early 70's and thought I'd go for the Kawasaki. But watching this makes me realise the Yamaha would be more fun. It's that triple engine, sounds great and has character.

Yamaha is not a retro. Better to compare it to the Z900 . Z900RS is a retro and should be compared to other retros such as Triumphs etc

I'd be happy with either, love the look of the 900RS but with the XSR I prefer the looks of the older model despite it's short comings and with the Velocity Moto LC kit it looks fantastic.

In my country the z900rs is currently sold for 8580 pounds converted and the xsr is at 10300 converted. Guess its a no brainer here.

I prefer the XSR 900 but because it was a new model in 2022, you couldn't get the darn thing. The wait list was 18 months long. So after that I was actually really really close to buying a used z900 RS. Just because there was a few years worth of available out there on the market. In the end thinking about my commute, I actually ended up on a Yamaha tracer and that choice was probably the right one. Love, the triple!

Just got my 2023 XSR900.. I like the seat because I probably will ride it less than an hour at a time, and the shelf out back adds confidence. Forget a passenger, those stirrups are Ridiculous. As far as looks go, it's absolutely stunning.. the engine is part of the beautiful frame all beautiful satin black, very few hoses or wires. It's so well integrated into a Unit. Clearly the strongest/lightest construction. One unawesome point about the XSR is the Paint.. the painted Yamaha and XSR900 on the sides should of been emblems, like the Kaw. Zeus fasteners aren't that great. The Peg position could of been lower. I'm 6' 1" 190, and will see if I can get adapter plates to lower them maybe an inch. The turning radius while maneuvering the bike in the garage is HUGE! I see no reason to constrain turning this much. The XSR is all function, everything was a function decision, nothing fake or unnecessarily reto just for looks. In fact very little except maybe the paint is really retro on the XSR. Why does it get a heritage title? It's more retro than the MT-09, because of the headlight. It's very hard to beat Looks, performance, weight, character, and technology of the XSR. MSRE was $10,199 a six week wait from Japan. A home run for Yamaha. IMO of course!

Going with the Dual Can Black Dominator Exhaust ($870 Shipped off EBAY) and Flash by Vcyclenut ($300)who has a LOT of PIPE dyno testing behind his flashes. Specifically the Dominator was like #2 power wise plus the removable DB Killer shouldn't be too obnoxiouis. Checked out his Air Box mods and filter Dyno tests and decided not worth it. Next mod may be a tooth or two once the highway drone is characterized. Love this bike!

My 1st 2 bikes were a Z1 and KZ (before I was even licensed), so I'm definitely partial. Hell, I still have my Z1, KZ750 and Z750E. But that aside, I'm not bothered by the price difference because the Kawasaki will hold its value better and will without a doubt keep its appeal much longer. The Kawasaki will age like a leather saddle, while the Yamaha will age like cheap leather jacket. The Kawasaki will gain character while the Yamaha will just get used and old.

I have ridden both and I can guarantee you, both are about the same speed. The Yamaha is more agile but uncomfortable, you notice it after 1 hour. The Kawasaki is massively more comfortable but also more expensive (Switzerland). Nevertheless, every time my XSR-900 friends get on my Z900RS, they want to ride my bike for the whole tour... I leave it up to you to decide what this means. In the end, everyone has to find the right bike for themselves.

I tested out both bikes before I decided to go with the Z900rs. The looks, quality, and fit/finish of the Z was clearly better then the Yamaha. Also, please help me understand why it’s okay for Yamaha to make 3 different motorcycles with the same engine and basically the same chassis? Like that’s not copying? The Kawa stands alone in it’s modern design. It may resemble the Kawa’s from the 70’s, but it’s a completely new design and one of a kind!

Nice review guys 👍. I love the look of the Kaw. It is in looks exactly what I remember (sort of) from my 1985 Honda CB650SC. Loved that bike. The Yamaha may be better techniqal wise, less weight, more HP, better suspension out the door, and less cost. BUT better in looks? Oh no, it’s as butt weird looking (to me) as BWM’s overdone boxer 1800 is. Who comes up with these designs? Not a 67 year old fart like me… ha ha. To each their own. Would I purchase a Z900? Hmmm no wind protection at all is a tall hurdle to jump if you’re going to do any touring as far as I can see. It’s an in town bike, 2-20 miles only, for both of em. Oh course, you couldn’t pay me to buy that Yamaha, it is so NOT the look I would pay money for, ugh!! Thanks for the great review of both.

People who complain about Z900Rs not having quick shifter are just lazy only 10yrs ago none was available for street bikes and still not needed.It was designed for racing seriously on streets clutch is fine.About cruise control if I want a bike with CC I'll be buy a goldwing or sport tourer why would I buy naked for putting hundreds of miles in a day on highway? About mods? None needed.Have we become lazy? I enjoy riding a bike and have no time fiddling through menu just to get out garage....

Bang for buck the XSR wins. BUT very rarely do people buy motorcycles at this price ranges looking for the most value for money. I believe most people gravitate towards what they feel looks better to them. I would be absolutely happy owning the Z900RS while at the same time almost completely agree with anyone that says the XSR900 is technically the better bike and value for money. I've seen both bikes in person at the same time and the Z900RS is a gorgeous thing to look at.

From the description and review of the Yamaha, it begs the question; why compare it to the retro Kawasaki? In the Yamaha you’ve described a modern motorcycle with no retro features or appeal whatsoever. From what you’ve described, the Yamaha should be compared to a modern motorcycle. It seems like Yamaha - and the reviewer - missed the whole point.

Not much else to say to two experienced road test journalists that are reviewing the Z900RS and talking about quick shifters and track days: personally I'd do more homework as to who this bike was, and is aimed at, and its people like me, born in the early 60's that had the original Z1 poster on his bedroom wall in the early 70's and dreaming of owning one some day: for me that day has arrived and its a stunning machine for laid back riding, not very often in the sun unfortunately, but smelling the rape seed in the countryside and still drooling as you pass the shop windows in the town at the kind of speeds that really don't need a quick shifter!!

I haven't ridden either but have the 2022 Tracer 9GT which shares the same engine as the XSR. I'm sure the riding dynamics on the more modern XSR would be better but the Z900RS looks stunning.
