birch 16" drum. put remo emperor on top and bottom. Throw six cotton balls inside. Tune both heads a bit lower. Boom. I do it like that and it's very similar to his.

holy smokes, that coated on the snare side trick is *golden* ....it's not the first time i've heard of or considered it ( changing snare sides is a pain in the neck for having to unscrew the snares ), but i think it's the first time i've gone through with it. so much punchier, and more _crisp._ definitely carrying this with me into the future.

@@ozziep123 oh no, no cardboard box....i like some controlled sound, but really dislike dead drums ( except maybe a kick ). the head is tight and the snares are definitely heard, and the coated bottom gives a different character to the sound of the drum. definitely worth a try if you don't mind changing snare sides. i do however use metal snares, so if you use wood, results will vary....also, the snare i used it on is a 14x7 or so.

@@Pr0digium there are a few videos on the Remo channel where Benny talks about tuning and head choice, they were super helpful when I was learning how to tune drums a few years ago. The key is practice!

The higher pitched one which he played first is the main snare. The other lower pitched one is the side snare

Don't get me wrong, I love a good kit walkthrough with Benny all day long. But at this time he has told all of what he is saying here in a number of other videos. I would love to see Benny talk about something you can't get in every gear video with him you see.

I actually learned quite a lot about how beneficial it is to understand what specific sound you want to produce and what tools you might need to do that, so it wasn't a waste of time at all.

Knowing and understanding your gear is fundamenal knowledge. If you are serious about your instrument having a broad knowledge about drumming history, cymbals, drumheads, drum sizes etc, will make you a better musician. You will be able to achieve the sound required for a recording session etc. I still get excited when I go to a music store and see all the different kits and accessories. I would love to have an entire room filled just with snare drums.
