Love the way you tackle a problem with some ingenious ideas. The shroud around your miter saw is a prime example. Well done so far and look forward to the next installment.

I put in a Super Dust Deputy XL (6" inlet, outlet) with a heavy rubber trash can as a bin below and it collects 99% of all the crud before it hits the Grizzly 1250 impeller & filter. Completely worth its cost... and space! I went with 6" and 4" sewer piping & fittings since it was considerably cheaper than metal and schedule 40 PVC. Much lighter to handle as well. My main line is 6" down shop center that branches with a Y into a pair of 4" runs to each side of the shop. Each 4" run has a few splitters and blast gates to each specific tool with final flex hose used (kept to the minimum).

(continued) positive pressure airflow assisting the negative pressure airflow generated by your system's impeller/motor. A balanced push-pull ventilation at the swarf source leads to 100% evacuation. Thus includes the micron size wooddust particulates that are unhealthy. Positive pressure air injection allows Venturi effect entrainment of (room) air; directs particulate airflow; increases cfm and velocity through the source zone znd in ducting. The trick is to strategically position air injection and balance the airflow so there is no over-pressuring within the collection chamber. Positive pressure airflow generally works best at velocities faster than that negative pressure Outflow. As this secondary air passes through the compression of the nozzle (any size) it rapidly expands as it additionally entrains additionally airflow, all aimed/directed through the contact zone (sawtooth, sandpaper, flute, etc to wood) and onward to the negative pressure outlet. The pneumatic conveyance and separation science in industry (think pill factory) is way more advanced than what the woodworking world is exposed. We makers need to lead the effort of using more of the existing sciences in experimenting, refining, and creating DIY collection, conveyance, and separation systems that are more effective in an effort to get manufacturers to incorporate these features as standard practice.

My first thought was possibly a reducer to smaller pipe once you got further away from the actual dust collector to maintain better suction. I am not a HVAC guy but know that volume of air is a big factor in engineering a system with good air flow at all outlets...or in your case inlets. looks great love it.

Homework assignment: Push-Pull ventilation at the swarf (particulate) generating chambers. Swarf in your shop is wooddust. Remember dust is named by the material being broken into smaller parts. Sawdust is misnomer, unless the saw is breaking starts, but even then it's metal dust. 100% evacuation of all particulates at their source is best achieved with Secondary Air Positive Pressure directed airflow as inflow assisting the

Great job!!! Putting the vent through the table is a great idea and then covering the whole miter saw around it eliminares all of the leaking issues with dust flying off of it. On the blast gates, did you get the idea from Johnathan Kat's Moses or someone else. I'm not saying he came up with it but he was the first person I saw doing it. Either way it's a great idea. I saw a review on a few different blast gates and they had their flaws. Does that one have any draw backs ? Anyways, great job and keep up the good work. Be safe and happy building!!!😁

the only worry I would have is that the propellants from the spray paint are not getting filtered out so you are possibly just flowing them back into the shop. Just a thought,. Overall a great system and I can't wait to see the overhead arms

Yeah, he should probably add an activated carbon volatiles filter behind the paper dust filter.

Another option... put a Y-pipe and pair of blast gates on the exhaust side of the collector impeller, between it and the canister filter. One side continues to the filter and the other could run to the outside of the shop. It would kill some efficiency of course, but would exhaust VOCs to the outside air. His collector is high mounted and may have space to put the splitter in.

Ben, That’s a terrible idea. You don’t vent flammable gases into a dust collector. That’s a recipe for combustion. You vent gases outside and dust in a dust collector.

Dozens of things to love about your shop and setup. (y) PRO TIP... if there is something distracting in your SHOT remove it so focus remains on the subject. Store labels can be removed by a child with mineral spirits in :30. Haters... go. Ben, I complimented you and gave you a tip. Ever see a store UPC label in a motion picture unless it was part of the plot? NOPE.

Some great ideas here, good job! At 12:55 I'd wished you had swapped the locations of the vac motor and the cyclone, but after looking at it a bit could see you couldn't. Subscribed because I want to read about your notched bench, AND because you have a Corgi!

Indeed. Be careful - that brushed fan motor could ignite the propellant in the spray paint. That cardboard box & mostly plastic fan worries me a bit if something unlikely does occur. Hopefully nothing happens.

Did you tape the seams on the straight pieces that go length-wise? Also, did you seal up each side of the blast gate where the pipe came in/out? Or was there a gasket? Or just pressure fit? Looks really great! Appreciate the use of the cardboard boxes too, not everything has to be baltic birch plywood.....
@Cdshakes

I came to the comment section to ask this exact question. You would definitely want to seal the pipe along the seam, lengthwise.

@@Cdshakes Yea, I assumed you would have to. I know pvc is more expensive, but looking at all this work, and all the chances at making a mistake, it might be worth it

I was told not taping each of the adjustment joints on those adjustable elbows would make the system leak like a sieve, have you noticed any air getting into those joints?
@timbarnes512
@timbarnes512 Жыл бұрын
I also have a dust collection system using metal heating duct work, but you really need to tape all the flex joints in the elbows and the linear joints in the pipe. You are probably getting pretty good results because you don't have a lot of footage of pipe, but your airflow will be significantly improved by taping all the seams.
