Winter. 1969. Funk 49 had been out for a few weeks. My roomie and I snuck into the Student Center before closing and hid from the cleaning folks overnight. At 8 am when they opened, there was a line of 30 people freezing outside the door, lined up for tickets for The James Gang. We got the front row middle four seats that way. Curtains open, and there's Joe in front of stacks of Marshalls. It was by far the best concert I've ever seen. Everyone was standing and rocking out. Joe was so dominant I don't remember a single thing about the drummer and bass player. He just killed. At one point he had two Leslies on opposites sides of the stage hooked up to a Hammond B3. Literally mind-blowing. The gig was premised on the fact that Joe had to promise he would not get high before the performance, was the rumor. Anti-drug by the 'authorities' was a big thing in those days. Can't really blame them, I guess. Joe was so high it appeared he never opened his eyes for the entire 2 hours. (He's straight as an arrow these days, so bully for him). And he still played his ass off. When Fender had their '50 Years of the Stratocaster' celebration concert, about 15 of the best guitar players in the world performed. They were all great. Joe just smoked everybody.

Joe is one of the most generous & conciousness people on the planet. Like here, sharing lead with the other guitarist. I saw him in concert in the early mid 70's. He brought out 2 black dudes to sing background on a couple tunes & when finished, they both walked off stage in darkness. Joe quickly signaled to hit them with a light, then gave prop man a thumbs-up. That's stuck with me all these many years.
