Well done Captain for adding the ND. I can see, though, the challenge that it gave you - the reflections, and the need to correct for the angle of the camera. I did notice was that the PFD was a lot less clear than in your previous video. In an ideal world, having both would be wonderful. If quality it is a compromise, I would personally vote for a clear PFD on its own, rather than a blurry PFD alongside the ND. The overall standard of your videos continues to be excellent - always something interesting to see! Thank you , as ever.

Thank you so much for the very detailed feedback! The final goal is a good picture of the PFD and the ND. I will continue on this "project" until the result is good. Good morning Captain, great video again and thanks for adding the ND. In order to minimize respectice prevent the reflections on the ND the usage of a polarization filter (Polfilter) in front of the camera lens might be helpful. Many greetings and have a nice weekend. 😀

Thanks for watching and your friendly words! Thanks for your question. Years ago, we had on almost any flight passengers and other interested people on the jumpseat. Due to very strict security regulations, this is completely impossible today. We get this question very often, but we always have to say: No, sorry, not possible. One of the reasons why I started this channel is to show interested people what we do on the flight deck without the need of being in person on the flight deck. You find contact details at the end of the videos or on the information page of my channel. Have a nice day!

Thanks a lot for your very good videos ! It looks to me like the transition altitude on the map is 5000 feet. So I'm guessing in your case it's ATC ordering you to set it to 1022 ?

At EDDB, when leaving the gate, is request for pushback and startup two separate things? I noticed on your taxi to the gate that another pilot requested pushback (but no startup). Normally I hear both at once.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Good observation. Startup is given by ATC controllers on the "delivery" frequency together with the ATC clearance. Pushback clearance is granted by "apron". They are responsible for the parking positions and taxiways near the parking positions.
@henrikolsen52 жыл бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Is that the normal across Europe, or special for EDDB/Germany or select airports? And when startup is included in delivery's clearance, does that mean you startup at the gate, and get pushed back with running engines, or do you still wait with startup until getting pushed?
@Pistol_Knight2 жыл бұрын
Might sound like a really stupid question, I noticed you approached over a windfarm do they cause any air disturbance? I'm guessing they are not allowed to be built too close to airports (or approach routes) but could they make a difference
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Great question! They may cause air disturbance in close proximity. But I do not think that they may cause disturbances in the altitudes we fly over or near them. Usually they are not allowed to be built near a runway.
@henrikolsen52 жыл бұрын
Can you help explain the Vls speed check on landing. Cannot remember why it's done, nor how to do it. Thanks.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
VLS stands for „lowest selectable speed“. It is the lowest speed the airplane will fly with the autothrust engaged. Even if you dial in a lower speed, the plane will not fly slower than VLS. The VLS is depending on the present airplane weight and is the basis for the speed target calculation during our approach. In the Airbus which we used, there are 2 different sources for the VLS. One VLS is indicated on the MCDU and one on the PFD. It is the top of the amber line in the speed scale (you can see it in the video). The MCDU-PFD is calculated on the basis of the zero fuel weight which we entered from the loadsheet. To this weight, the weight of the current fuel on board is added and the VLS is calculated on the basis of that weight. The PFD VLS is calculated on the basis of an independent weight calculation which the airplane is doing (FAC computer) on the basis of aerodynamical data (angle of attack measurement …) and the entered CG value from the loadsheet. During the final approach when we are in landing configuration, we check both speed indications. If the PFD VLS is higher than the MCDU VLS, we add that difference manually to the approach speed in the MCDU. This is done because the MCDU approach speed is the basis of the approach speed target calculation of the autoflight system.

Great video thanks a lot. I noticed some carriers turn off the auto-throttle early in the approach, as you did, while others keep it on and manage the speed all the way to landing. What is the advantage of turning it off?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! And thanks for your question. Airbus recommends using the autothrust during all phases of flight. Also, every Airbus pilot needs to be proficient flying the approach with manual thrust. Every Airline has own procedures and ideas about that topic. I like the autothrust and prefer to land with autothrust on. Nevertheless, I do approaches with autothrust off on a regular basis to stay current. This is a topic for a very long discussion. To make it short: The pilots who prefer autothrust off want to have the complete control and make a thrust input often together with a back or forward imput at the stick. The autothrust-on pilots like the idea that the airplane always flies a safe speed on its own. They also know that changes in pitch are usually followed by an automatic change in thrust. To avoid big changes in thrust, flying a very constant descent rate helps a lot.

Eurowings SOPs I suppose. At Eurowings it is usual to fly manual Thrust and Flight as much as possible, as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@yes-ni1od2 жыл бұрын
@@florianmisof1988 Fair enough, I would much rather trust a computer to maintain speed than a human though
@florianmisof19882 жыл бұрын
@@yes-ni1od I get that, at Lufthansa e.g. they land with Autothrust on most of the time, I think, but what's the fun in that, right;) And the Airbus is basically a point and shoot aircraft, so maintaining speed by hand is very easy. And of course the Pilots need to stay sharp with their landing skills, in case the computer is not around anymore to support, so I think it's good to practice and get a feel for it as much as possible.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the question. The pilot flying decides if she or he wants to use the autothrust for the landing. We must be able to fly the approach with autothrust on and off. So we have to do both on a regular basis to be proficient. Airbus recommends the use of autothrust during all phases of flight. Even during manual flight.
