When Bermuda lawns look ugly in the summer it's time to scalp. PRODUCTS → www.howtowithd...
Doc does a "hard cut" to the Bermuda lawn. Less aggressive than a true lawn scalp the hard cut leaves green foliage on the lawn. This helps the Bermuda grass recover quicker.

I did an "accidental" hard cut about a week ago. We went away for a while and the grass got pretty high. I cut it at the same setting but the stocks really started to show. I thought I ruined my lawn ! Sure enough it's turning nice and green again after a week. I cut with a riding mower so it's hard to keep the grass as short as I'd like it without scalping it. Thanks for the video and explanation about how Bermuda grass grows.

So glad for this post, as I was just contemplating doing this. I live in AZ where it’s 105-110. I water a LOT but wonder if this hard cut / almost scalp could be too hard at these temps?

I like mowing with a John Deere subcompact tractor. It has a belly mower you can take on and off pretty easily. I like the power and the humming of the diesel. Plus it has the capability of using various implements with it. If I was gonna go with a reel mower, I'd have to look into a bigger riding one because my yard is over an acre.

I have a regular lowes kolbalt push rotary mower. I figured out the other day that if I pull the height setting out of 1" and let it go all the way down, I think it got me aroud .5". I sharpened my blades and put on that height, def seeing yellow spots and green but I feel like I didn't hurt the Bermuda. Don't know if others tried it with that, my yard is too small for one of those reel mowers..

doc i have a question for your next Q and A. more of advice i guess. what about shade areas. the tree in my backyard has been cut back to maximum. my idea is to plant some st Augustine in the shade areas. is this a good alternative. my only concern i see is big weed treatment and pre -emergent. have to look at a different table.
@HowTowithDoc
@HowTowithDoc 3 жыл бұрын
I think the St A will be too invasive. I would look more towards a NON-SPREADING shade tolerant grass.
@Jackson-tw3kc
@Jackson-tw3kc 3 жыл бұрын
Totally see what you're saying, but this big yellow thing here in texas does a good job of keeping it in the dark. I might try my luck. Can always starve it for water maybe and thank you! I think if invasive is all that could he a problem then no problem at all.

So I emailed a really smart turf and lawn specialist who alot of experts lean on when it comes to the science of it all. And he says your roots are going to create microbes in your soil naturally, putting down microbial packs are not necessary Says they could even eat the nutrients your putting out for your turf. Especially with a mature lawn like docs that has had 5 years of thousands and thousands of dollars of care and extras like humichar. Doesn't hurt but not necessary. Idk I been putting on my lawn but also wonder is all this KZbin lawn extras worth it?
@HowTowithDoc

Fungus... not microbes. The spores need to be placed, roots can't create them.
