I purchased a home that had a perfect yard. Being a disabled veteran i had time to take care of it. My neighbor yard was in really bad shape and had bermuda grass coming towards my yard. They purchased their home a month after i purchased mine. The husband and i were talking one day and he gave me the green light to smoke his front yard and reseed it with bluegrass mix. I smoked his yard 3 times with round up.. Then i used a yard grader to level out the yard to get the drainage right. One area i had to take the soil down about 8" .... guess what i found growing that deep? Bermuda grass root.... just green and alive. Even after spraying the yard 3 times with round up... the root of bermuda grass was full alive. I was able to get all the bermuda grass killed off. It is amazing how it will stay alive deep in the soil.

I've seen Bermuda go in around an East basement window, down the wall across the floor and back up to a window on the South side. Green on the end and dead looking for 30 ft. in between. I think those aliens that built the pyramids must have brought it to Earth

I have some lawns that I seed every fall and by the following summer they might as well be considered a Bermuda lawn. It’s amazing how the fescue will go dormant in the heat then come back when the Bermuda goes dormant.

Pete I gotta say I got Ground ivy /creeping charlie that i had real real thick that i thought I got rid of but man its like your Bermuda there it just doesnt quite ever go away I've had to spot spray a handful of areas where it comeback up this year. And I havent seen it in my yard in almost 2 years now. Only thing that kills it is Dicamba, also Triclopyr but its expensive

Minou TV I used a foaming soap dispenser that my wife got from bath and body works. After we used all the soap I swiped it and made my own glypho recipe with some blue dye.

On close inspection, I don't think that's thistle. :-) Horsenettle is a perennial weed that reproduces by seed and creeping rootstocks. The root can grow deep in the soil so tillage is not an effective control strategy. Application of a systemic herbicide such as glyphosate in the late summer when the plants are flowering should provide good control.

Hey, Pete....would the foamer work using Mirimichi Green in place of glyphosate? I ask because of the ability for the glyphosate to move into the soil or onto other plants/turf if irrigated or it rains (like you said, don't irrigate after you apply).

That thistle can be tough. Comes back like wild violet. Try some Milestone on it. It’s a farming herbicide used in hayfields. The stuff is deadly to all weeds and woody type stuff. Won’t kill grass!

I have the same problem in the transition zone with buffalo grass in my tall fescue. Somebody said to keep reseeding every year and the tall fescue will choke out the buffalo grass. Any suggestions would be great thanks in advance

I have never seen anything that can completely remove that dang bermuda.. And then you have the root systems of it down a couple of feet deep, AND the tiny little seeds that will germinate next summer.. Hate the stuff.. Thank you for the Foamer idea ! It is absolutely the Best way to go selective on things that are bad for your turf.. God Bless !

Go Pete go- funny how a drop or two can handle a brushy wood type mini tree in the flower bed, but it takes a bath to decimate three runners of Bermuda.

Pete is lucky to have such little wild Bermuda in his yard. This year has been the worst in my cool season mixed yards. Pylex is just too expensive and there is no guarantee of success. Most solutions I've seen are for 100% fescue, not mixed. I don't think there is a way to spot spray Roundup. Lots of collateral damage.

Jut a thought . . . have you ever tried using a funnel (they come in different sizes of course), pulling the offending weed up through the opening and that way you might be able to limit the exposure of the weed killer. Just saying. . .

I use Turflon Ester to kill the Bermuda grass in my tall Fescue grass. I first use a four prong sharp rake to pick up the Bermuda grass long rhizomes so they're exposed above the Fescue, then I spray. I wait about 2 weeks, and then hand pull out the Bermuda grass, which is now mostly white and dead, pulling out some really long roots. I treat two more times at four week intervals. It never all goes away, so I do this regimen once or twice a year. The Turflon Ester does not kill the Fescue.

Try Turflon. Be sure the area is well irrigated and actively growing to maximize absorption of the herbicide. Plan on two applications to eliminate what you have already. If it has seeded out in the past you'll probably get some new Bermuda germinating next season. Do another herbicide treatment and that should get it under control. Beyond that spot treatments are all you'll need.

I've been fighting Bermuda grass in my mostly fescue lawn for 22 years. Every summer, I think I eliminated it, but by Aug I start finding runners and seed-heads again, usually in the same spots, which are a little bare from last time so easier to spot it. I gave up using Roundup since it just weakens it but doesn't seem to kill it. After first moving in, I didn't think of it until I noticed some infested spots. At one corner of the lawn, I covered with clear plastic for a month to "solarize" it. The sun is intense here in CA Central Valley all summer. Mostly killed it, but it still came back apparently from some deep roots which survived. Now, I dig up spots as soon as I see it. I used to try to save the good grasses, but invariably leaves a little root and it can return from just the tiniest piece of hard thin root. I dry the chunk in the sun, shake off the loose dirt, then toss all the mixed grass in the green-waste bin. Hopefully the county's composting kills it so residents using the compost aren't infested with the demon. If a single runner, I sometimes run the garden hose along it, making a mole-hole to feel down to the root and any runners. If you ignore a runner long, it sets a new distant root then spreads runners from there in a star. You are then fighting a fractal demon.

Hey Pete, what do you think about using that little pump on old returning Crepe Myrtle shoots that like to keep popping up? That is the first thing I thought of for my use. Not sure Glyphosate is the answer for that but maybe?

Jeff Williams - I think you will be killing your entire Crepe Myrtle if you put that on the shoots, since they are coming out of the rootstock of the Crepe Myrtle.. The shoots absorb it, they are connected to the rootstock, it absorbs it, the Crepe Myrtle starts dying... I have the same issue with some Red Dynamite Crepe Myrtles that took a few years before they started sending up shoots, I just cut them down as deep as possible in the ground with some hand pruners..

I took one piece an put it on the other side where there is no grass (or water) in the middle of the heat of the summer.. 2 weeks later... the thing is still alive and we just got rain I think it's going to take over the whole area one day... talk about Beastie stuff

Way to go Pete one of the most invasive grasses I’ve ever seen and in Utah it really is against the law to plant Bermudagrass. To invasive. Wish they would have a great product to get rid of Bermuda grass in a turf type tall fescue lawn on shot but most are control it’s terrible

I burned my entire yard last year do get rid of Bermuda before planting TTTF. My connected neighbor didn’t, well big mistake, my entire yard is over run with Bermuda again. And it happened FAST. One day it was one or two stalks i pulled, next thing i know its all over the place, not even just on the property line, i guess it also came up from deep under ground too. What a nightmare, nothing works. Its bad enough i might just give up having a nice yard.

Trust me I had the same exact problem in my lawn. It's not (entirely) your neighbors fault. Some likely crept over from his side, but you didn't get it 100% killed off in your lawn. Plus I'd guarantee you had tons of tiny bermuda grass seeds in the dirt from when it had previously went to seed head, as most bermuda grasses and especially common bermuda are not sterile like the TTTF you planted. I'd highly recommend killing off the fescue and re-sewing in a good bermuda grass seed. Don't try to fight it off for 5 years like I did.

That thistle like weed is a beast. It has a tap root attached to a deep horizontal running main root. You might notice that they emerge in a line. Keep them treated and keep them small or go after the main root. It could be 6 to 10 inches deep. Good luck.

You can use a low rate of glyphosate to kill the Poa triv, the Bermuda will be fine. Some actually use glyphosate as a growth regulator for Bermuda in low rates.

Samuel Asamoah actively growing. You need the Bermuda to be growing/not dormant in order for the plant to uptake the glyphosate. Spraying over dormant Bermuda will do nothing to eradicate it, as the plant will not pass the product systemically.

If you don't want the Bermuda to touch your TTTF, clip or zip tie it to stake in the ground. Then your fescue is safe and not covered by the cardboard.

Doing this for many years as my neighbor's wild bermuda creeps into my yard. I have tied a clear plastic bag over the Bermuda, then tied it to a stake. However I used straight RoundUp on a mini sprayer. A foaming sprayer is a great solution! I will try.

Bro where is the video you said you had pinned. I just tilled up my back yard. It was infested with wild Bermuda grass. How do I kill allll the stuff under the dirt. I raked up everything that was on the top and hand-picked most of the things that were poking up but I know there’s still stuff down under. Before I told her I mowed it all the way down and sprayed it with Roundup and sage hammer because there was some sage before and I also put a little bit of tenacity. I let it sit for a few days and then ran the sprinklers hoping that that would push it down deeper. What should be my next steps. I live in California by the way.
