Hopkins was a proponent of clean living, didn't let his weight balloon up too much between fights - so I suppose that at least partially explains why he was able to fight at a high level at such an advanced age - that, & the fact that he had a reliable defensive technique. Both fighters actually fought well here, though it wasn't the type of fight that the general sports fan would appreciate. Hopkins carried some pop on his punches as well, so Bad Chad had to be wary of that the entire fight. Hard to say who out-landed who, & you probably had to be at ringside to be certain of scoring the fight accurately.

You don't understand boxing apparently. Bernard is able to control a fight because the opponents have to worry about his fat head. He tries to ram his head into their face from start to finish. If he gets you once, the fight might be over. He's done that in every fight,............then people say he's a genius. He's a shifty old thug and that's all. The stupid ass officials and referee's let him butt his opponent without making an effort to stop him. You get in with him and let him lower his head and rush at you. When he gets right on you, he raises his head throwing it side to side. Are you going to stick to your plan after that or keep a close eye on his big head?

And as far as similarities with Ruiz, I’m talking about Bernard’s “skill” of always holding, grabbing, locking onto/damn near twisting the opponent’s arm, wrestling, and Bernard adds in the occasional low blows, kidney shots, using his forearms, leaning/pushing on opponents, and charging in head first that the refs manage to miss. He even managed to make Felix Trinidad appear to not be dirty himself. THAT speaks volumes in itself!

@@creoleDJ You act as if Hopkins fights dirty in EVERY fight. I know all of these tactics of his, and yes they are indeed dirty. But if my memory is correct, he also had a good handful of championship fights where he dialed back on that crap. All of that being said, Bernard is rarely as dull as watching Ruiz fight. Bernard had a couple stinkers, but none of them can compete with the stink bomb of Ruiz vs Kirk Johnson. Even dirty, I'd still rather watch Hopkins over Ruiz any day of the week! They are also not on the same skill level.

I think the footwork on both sides was inferior. They both walked a lot with Dawson's foot position being much better. He just walked Hopkins down showing ring superiority and power. Making someone look bad and winning the fight are two different things. Hopkins had some flashes of his old brilliance, but it takes more than an occasional flash to compete at this level. Dawson won, but he needs to show more heart and run em down better. His jab was very good. He just needed to be more aggressive. Overall O.K. fight, but not great.

And with this boxing B-Hop hopes to beat Kovalev? Ha-ha-ha! Kov just needs to unleash his fury from the first round and then build up the pace of the fight every next round, raining hundreds of blows mainly on Hop's body and ribs and the old man will be done by round 5, not later. Chad and Bernie stood and danced most of the fighting. Kovalev won't give this luxury to Bernie, but will stich into high gear and will give him no respite until B-Hop is finished.

Dawson tried to hit him clean on his chin and could not, but Kovalev will instead be working on his old body and liver - there's no way B-Hop will endure this beating. And then Dawson was fighting at a very slow pace. Kovalev should switch into higher gear from the very first round and rain combinations of terrible blows on Hop's liver, ribs, body, ear drums, and build up the pace of fighting all the time. Then Hopkins will be done by round 4 or 5.

Only a fringe boxing fan would write something so dumb. Dawson moved down to fight Ward thinking Ward would have to move up eventually; a dumb move. Stevenson hit him clean and he looked fat his last fight. Make no mistake though; Dawson can fight. Hopkins had zero chance to win this fight without doing everything dirty under the son. Hes always been a dirty fighter with a big mouth. Heres hoping he gets stretched out Saturday night.

@Wario's Gold Coin Dawson was weight drained against Ward. Dawson -- usually --rehydrated to about 200lbs, from 175, so he was already cutting weight to an extreme. Cutting to 168 -- metaphorically -- killed him. Stevenson could get an explosive ko, on anyone, at anytime. Chad Dawson injured his shoulder, early in the fight, against Karpency; in spite of that, Dawson should've won the fight, but was given a questionable decision. I am very confident you know, all that I just stated, but, because of your bias, you choose to ignore it. Have some decency; you're better than this.

If you're saying Joe would've beat Dawson at light heavy, you're obviously another delirious british fan trying to hype up one of your few good fighters. Dawson looked way better, against Bernard Hopkins than Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe almost lost the fight against B-hop, due to sheer inaccuracy and ineffectiveness. Hopkins landed, about good 11 punches, in the entire fight, yet, the decision was close. Joe had good stamina and durability, but, that would've worked against him, if he fought Dawson, because Dawson would give him 12 rounds of brain damage. Dawson rehydrated to the cruiserweight limit (200lbs); Calzaghe was a flabby 180. Figure it out.

If you don't think that Hopkins fights dirty by using his head,.......take a look at the very end of the fight. At 54:38,.....he charges one last time with his head aiming for Dawson's head/chest, hoping to knock him out any way he could. Any opponent has to fight 12 full rounds defending against his head before worrying about legitimate punches. Look at the nasty cut above Dawson's eye. Think that was caused by a punch? He butted Trinidad several times, and if you watch the Kovalev fight,.... you'll see Sergei was keenly aware of Bernard's head at all times. He knew that was the only danger that Bernard posed, so he had to fight very cautiously.
