Andre Ward is an absolute master of footwork, angles, control of distance, and controlling his opponent's balance when infighting, all of these combining to create a fighter that is currently on a whole other level to his opponents. Ward was like Hopkins - stays out his opponent's punching range unless he wants to punch - & puts his opponent off balance by stepping in off a feint before he throws a punch. Max has got it wrong. Southpaw vs Orthodox, the jab is easier to land if your lead foot is inside (not outside) your opponent's lead foot - but to land the cross, you need the lead foot to be outside your opponent's lead foot. Ward out classed dawson and showed his p4p greatness. Ward has to many tools in the tool box and arguably the most heart of a fighter ever! Dawson looked gun shy and once ward took away his one and only weapon (the jab) it was just a forgone conclusion then. I believe most people don't know how big of a win this was for Andre. Dawson wasn't no punk and had fought and beat just as good of opposition as ward had. Ward making it look easy only speaks to his greatness. This was the beginning of the end for Dawson.

What you fail to realize is distance management...you can have "the jab, the hand speed, the power"... if your opponent is managing distance, you will lose and get pummeled. Watch round 6 again, that was the round Ward established his imprisoning control of distance. Ward used one shot and slip, two shots and slip, level changes, to confuse Dawson. Dawson was guessing from that round on those single double slips always set up combinations.....and that was Andre's strategy.

I think Dawson's weight drain had a lot to do with the extent of Ward's dominance in this fight. Not saying Dawson would have won at 175 but draining those 7 pounds does make a huge difference in strength and performance, and Dawson would have no doubt performed better at 175. Hence, why Hearn is now trying to get Bivol to come down to 168 for the Canelo rematch.

I never understood his decision to come down in weight to face Ward. He was a career light-heavy, Ward wasn't a big enough name to bring in a huge payday and beyond that, Andre had fought at light heavy in the Olympics so it should have been him moving up to challenge Dawson. Sorry but Chad was dumb to take this and it practically ruined his career.

Chad is from my hometown of New Haven CT. He started smoking too much weed and hanging with the gangs when he was on top. Popping bottles, going to clubs. I know the guy who discovered him and became his manager at Ring One on Congress Ave.. but they had a falling out with Chad because he wanted to be a thug too instead of a champ. New Haven may be home to yale University but it's also the murder capital of CT. It's a crime ridden city outside of Yale. He even has the 5 star tattoo on his back. Think about it

@@too_sturdy I don't think it was that. I think it was because he was switching trainers too much, and he had a bad attitude. It takes time for a trainer to evaluate their fighter; their strengths their weaknesses, getting their fighter to fight at their absolute best. Everytime Chad was hiring a new trainer he was going back to square 1, the trainer evaluating Dawson and seeing how he's like, and that trainer could be making Chad fight the wrong way at first. It takes like 5 or 6 fights for a trainer to really understand their boxer, and in some cases that trainer is just not good. So Chad wasn't improving, he was actually regressing every-time he got a new trainer (although in Chad's case he had like 4 elite trainers that would have made him fight to his potential). Chad should have had a permanent trainer before he won the title, he choose Floyd Mayweather Sr and he should have stuck with him.

Ward is giving an absolute clinic on how to handle a southpaw and many fighters and trainers dont see this so if you are someone who wants to learn, this is a great visual performed by a great intelligent fighter. I also love the the strategy ward and his coach put together to break down dawson.

I never respected that Wards camp purposely weight drained the shit out of Dawson just to have an advantage. I love Ward but those are the things that can take away from a victory especially when you could see that the other in Dawson is visibly physically effected by the cut. You’re practically handicapping the guy for an advantage.
