I was drinking a coffee one morning at the Michael Wood Services on the M5. Bernard sat at the next table with 2 minders and winked at me and said " Good Morning Son". We chatted about a recent video release from one of his Embassy Club shows and he ran off a couple of gags. I nearly burst my sides. Shortly after, I got up to leave and he said "Cheerio Son, don't forget your Newspaper". Bloody lovely guy. Bless him.

Absolute class this man. Saw him in the Embassy in 1984, unfortunately I sat in his view and had the absolute piss taken out of me throughout. After the show he came up to me , shock my hand, asked my name and where I was from and apologised as he couldn’t help himself to single me out that evening. He was very polite, had a chat with us all for a few minutes and said if we come back again, he’ll not pick on me as he’s exhausted the fat jokes but he’ll pick on one of my mates with the skinny bastard jokes. Hilarious and saw him a good few times into the late 90’s before I moved south.👍🍻

If he was around today he wouldent last a night.. to many people are to sensitive and have destroyed comedy..comedians are scared shirtless incase they hurt someones feelings..but it just shows in the way he came over to u after and says thanks for the laugh, that's all it was..that's the way it should always be but unfortunately Europe is gone to shit..

I remember seeing him at a club in the Black Country......that night it was a pea souper and he was supposed to be on stage at 10pm, by 11.30 we were all considering going home, he aint coming....manager came on stage said that Bernard had still managed to just get here and was prepared to do the act if we wanted, place was still packed....first thing he did was put a wad of cash behind the bar so EVERYONE could have a few drinks on the house, apologised for being late and then did a two hour set....still one of the funniest shows I've ever been at, fucking hilarious.....now that shows you the type of man he was, genuine, sincere and a bloody good comic

It was horrible the way Caroline Aherne ambushed this man on her Mrs Merton show. I had a lot of time for Caroline but that was pure badness on her part. She did to him in public what ITV did to Benny Hill in private. Their comedy was of a time and they deserved more respect for the years of laughter they gave us. RIP Bernard, Benny and Caroline too.

Exactly the key thing is act. He did a lot for charities, he helped everyone including Asian orphaned kids, he also turned down doing a gig at the BNPs request, saying he didn't agree with their politics, that never gets reported

When in Rome you have to do as the Romans do. Manning worked the tough northern working mens clubs and paid his dues - he gave those audiences what they wanted, he'd have been eaten alive otherwise. I worked with him twice back in the 90s - he was a genuinely gifted comedian who could be funny with clean humour as equally as he could be dirty. His timing and quickfire wit was impeccable - and to be honest was a rather quiet, considered and slightly eccentric chap behind the stage curtain. You can argue forever about some of his comedic material - but taken purely on his technical ability to set up and deliver a joke hes the best stand up comic the Uk has produced.

I hadn’t heard of mick miller until I saw this interview and Mark told that story and Bernard and him both said micks a funny man. I just searched his name on KZbin and watched a routine of his and can only echo there sentiments. Very funny indeed and seems to be another one who has been blacklisted from mainstream television. I recommend watching mick miller to all those who like the old school style free speech comedy and he also combines modern elements in his act also. Definitely worth watching. I find Myself watching all pre 2000 comedy lately on KZbin because the stuff on mainstream television today like “live at the Apollo” and the likes of Michael McIntyre is so bad that it’s almost a joke in and of itself and I sometimes feel embarrassed for the people in the audience who have paid big money to watch the absolutely shit that’s put on today. God bless the likes of Bernard and a lot of the 70s comics both black and white who deserved every fucking penny they earned.

Fantastic. R. I. P., Bernard. I saw Bernard Manning at The Embassy Club back in the late 80's, when I was a young man. Ralid, cunning, relentless and unforgiving, all of it superb. Yes, he was what we would now call racist. Back in the day, right or wrong, it was mostly tongue in cheek titillation. No, it isn't acceptable nowadays, nor should it be. But I don't think Bernard was really racist, it was an angle of humour - push until you get a reaction, then go for the jugular. Jovial, overweight, smiling man causes audiences to guffaw and gasp in shock and hilarity, beautifully mixed and delivered with such seeming ambivalence, at times it's hard to distinguish the man from the mundane. Thank you for posting the video. Brings back fond memories of days gone by and a time when we were allowed to laugh at ourselves. R. I. P. Bernard

I was actually arrested recently and I couldn’t resist using one of Bernard’s jokes. The cop read me my rights- ‘anything you say can and will be taken down and used in a court of law’ I just looked at him. He said ‘have you anything to say?’ with a quizzical look on his face. I said ‘please stop hitting me officer!’ The woman pc and the fella broke up laughing it was pretty funny! This is true! I couldn’t resist it! 👍🤣
