I attended a seminar with the PSF guys when they where in Scotland a few years ago. Heath`s teaching style is top tier, I have been to plenty of seminars where you can be shown something really cool but you never try it again. I use the stuff from that seminar every week.

Just wanted to say I have been waiting for this exact side control escape. I remember a black belt hitting this on me in a random open mat and I never realised where he was gripping on my gi. I always thought it must’ve been some lapel wizardry but this actually works against an opponent that is adamant on purely holding you down with a hard cross face (yes there are always counters to every move but you can use this against most aggressive opponents). Thanks Heath all the way from 🇦🇺

Man thanks so much Jeremy! I was able to compare notes with a multiple time black belt world champion and we actually came up with this thought to start using it when you are flat and have exhausted simple traditional escapes. Have had a lot of success with it creating space for other escapes that were exhausted before doing it as well. I hope it helps your game!

Like some of the other people in the comments, I’m inclined to react with a great deal of skepticism to this, because it seems to violate a number of fundamental principles of good positional defense. Of course, like Mr. Pedigo says, it’s hard to argue with the results. His team is very successful. This is where I think of something that Andrew Wiltse said in one of his videos. He talked about how he would rather learn directly from high-level competitors than from coaches like John Dannaher, etc. It’s not that the coach doesn’t know his stuff. It’s just that the competitor will probably distill things down to the most effective versions as a result of his experience.

Interesting fact. Andrew Wiltse started Jiu-Jitsu with me and lived in my gym. He was promoted from white belt to black be belt by me. Just kind of a funny coincidence. Sometimes traditional escapes just don't work when you've fell so behind that you are flat and at major risk. This is for that specific situation. I'm not a strong person, but it help create space when there are no other options. I would use a simpler escaping or re-guarding technique if it were just that easy. Making an instructional of a bunch of things that only work on someone you have more experience than just wasn't really my thing. This is to compete, grow and evolve faster against the best people in your room and get you results for whatever journey you're upon. I appreciate you watching Jo Ph I hope you get to check out the last couple videos Bernardo put up as well. Would love your thoughts on them as well!

Being pinned and overwhelmed in side control is very frustrating. Sometimes traditional escapes just don't work when you've fell so far behind that you are flat and at major risk. This is for that specific situation. I'm not a strong person, but it helps create space when there are no other options. Think about your arms like a car jack or when you're holding the weight on the bench press with your elbows locked out. Once they're locked they can momentarily hold much more weight/ pressure. This is when letting go with one arm would give you a small amount of room to get your arms underneath, activated and back into the fight. Again, I don't show alot of traditional things on the instructional. Not because they don't work but because we need more options to create angles to assist are other go to escapes etc. At the end of the day, try it and try to make it work. If it doesn't work, learn it and make sure it doesn't get done to you. I sure do appreciate you watching and commenting either way. Much appreciated.

It's almost like the ghost escape, but in reverse. Love this as an option and will definitely be seeing if it works for me. As an aside, I've heard amazing things about Heath as a coach and PSF as a family from a friend (Mach) that recently started training there. There's something to be said for not only being dominant on the mat, but also being genuinely good people.

Angles against frames is a good someone mentioned but that would need elaborated on.... to be more precise....remember we are in a situation where we have been pinned and exhausted traditional escapes or better yet, we are stuck and have no options. Continuing to try the same thing and getting nowhere is beyond frustrating. This movement allows you to create space not only to attempt to get your arm in but move more freely underneath your opponent.... that being said.... think about your arm that is staying posted as a car jack holding up a car to change the tire or you holding up the weight on a bench press. Once the elbow is locked the weight is much easier to hold up. This gives you momentary movement to get your arm on your chest to create more space or even to use your traditional escapes if more comfortable. Of course in Jiu-Jitsu even when we do things correctly if you wait until you are at the end of a submission or horrible position it changes the rules a bit. I do believe it will help alleviate the pressure and give you time which is worth its wait in gold when being smashed and making a new plan lol. Give that a try and see if it helps!

It's a video for white belts or people going over things again to evolve fundamentals specifically. I can do the move on another experienced person and they'll get it quite easy I'm sure. Bringing the white belts and teaching them to do it would be like teaching the same people at home. They have similar movements and questions. It's easier for them to relate to them than someone who can already do it precisely. It's important to me if they purchase the instructional that's it's an investment they can be happy with and put use to effectively.

Don, what would you advise if you have exhausted the traditional escapes (I'm sure at the early in your grappling career before becoming where you are now you had early troubles as a beginner) and you are completely flat, overwhelmed and unable to move your opponent? This is quite different from a bench press but I understand your comment. Looking forward to hearing and learning I would love to add it to the high level competitions for my guys.
