I train at Bernardo’s academy and we get a lot of visitors stopping in. One day as a one year white belt, I rolled with a brown belt visitor and he had me in some leg scissor and it was tight but I thought I’m not tapping to this. I did not realize he had his hand on my lapel between his legs and across my carotid artery, I went out. I woke up to him rubbing my chest, and I said “that was tight, did I tap” he said “no, that’s why I’m rubbing your chest”. Bernardo was watching and he told me a story about getting choked out as an upper belt by a lower belt. Then he said “I like to think that’s how death is going to be, peaceful and just slipping off to sleep”, it has made me more comfortable with my mortality ever since.

I competed at the 2010 Pans as a white belt. During my first match, I had my opponent in my closed guard and broke his balance forward. He posted with both hands above my head, and I felt him fishing for an Ezekiel. Prior to the competition, my coach had given us a lecture of all the stupid things white belts try in tournaments and how to counter them. This was one. I spent a second or two of precious time full of righteous indignation, thinking, "Look at this clown! He's about to get armbarred!" This was immediately followed by "Shit, this is kinda tight. I'd better scoot out my hips so I can..." ZZZzzzzZZzzzz.... While I was out, I had a long, elaborate dream that I was on a Caribbean cruise liner with my wife. Several days of dream-time passed. We went snorkeling, jet-skiing, visited coastal towns. We were lounging by the pool with some cocktails when some idiot kid started shaking my chair. I turned around to yell at him, only to see the referee of the match shaking me awake. Elapsed time, maybe 10 seconds. The first words out of my mouth were, "Hey guys, what are you doing on my boat??" after which the entire mat staff lost it laughing.

I first was to an Ezekiel too, it didn’t felt tight and I had room to work, then I was in a queue ordering chicken. I couldn’t quite remember what I was doing before ordering chicken but felt it was important. It was really confusing see my coach looking down at me. Maybe Ezekiel’s are special,Dream Strangles.

I went out with a triangle in one of my first sessions with my coach (to be fair, I told him to try and tap me as much as he could to see the skill difference between a begginer and a black belt, took about 10 seconds before I was in the choke), I dreamt of jogging with my dad as a kid through some sort of corn maze and my dad cheering me to jog faster with him, then I woke up pretty confused.

I was on a beach in Jamaica (reggae music played back then at our gym). The thought was, "This is the most beautiful place!" It was followed by, "Wait, how did I get here!?!" Then I heard one of my coaches calling my name in the distance. I woke up and immediately laughed because I knew what happened.... 😂😂😂

Just got choked out at training, and funnily enough I got caught the exact same way, baseball bat choke as I passed guard. I too thought there was no way this black belt can choke me out from bottom side. I remember thinking this. I then remember being at home in bed, dreaming of jiu-jitsu, I then woke up and realised I my reality was a dream, and my dreams reality. I had to come back and watch this video after, eases my pain and embarrassment a little.

My first and thus far only time was in a judo class, practicing newaza. I got caught in kata ha jime, single wing choke. Had my arm over my head and I thought in my inexperience, oh no, my arm is straightening out, this must be an armbar! So my defensive reaction was to grab my own hand, oblivious to the gi around my neck. The armbar I anticipated never showed up, but neither did the blood to my brain! 🤣

I trained at a place in las vegas where the students were a very tight knit bunch. Anytime someone was put to sleep, we would gather around them and when they woke up and we would all say " Happy Birthday!". The fact is, the best chokes are so subtle the person getting choked never feels the pressure being applied and never has any fear of being choked out.

My friends story is funnier than mine. He was competing as a white belt. Made it through to the finals where he was winning on points but then got put to sleep with cross collar choke. The ref was raising the opponent's hand when my friend was coming to. He heard all the cheers and people clapping, so he assumed it was for his "victory. He is standing up hand raised, smile on his face.... till... he looks around and see the ref with his opponent's hand raised. Then he was quiet embarrassed lol

One guys like " I think hes out"... i look at him with lapel choke still locked in and i see stoned eyes then i freak out shaking him yelling out his name SAMYYYYYYYY!. Then gets up and tells the class I never been put to sleep b4... felt proud as ever... then he belted me with submissions left and right and still does till today. John Danaher knows him well.... i wont say his name cos if my instructor finds out.... im curry!.

Now a days I m white belt, an assistant coach who himself is a black belt in judo & senior practioner of BJJ was teaching me some technique during which I got the chance to RNC him. As I felt that to be my lucky moment, I did my move as hard as possible to impress him. The fact is, he was really impressed & when he in end of class started rolling with me applied the pressure to experience the flavor of RNC. Woohh... It was so sudden & brutal that I forgot to tap & had to bear pain even further. My eyeballs were like about to pop out. Guys respect your seniors because when they will start showup then you would no where..

The first time I got choked out, I was already a black belt in judo. I was rolling in Ne Waza with a young woman from our dojo. She didn’t really enjoy judo that much, but I had recently been trying to encourage her. I had given light resistance and let her slip in a Okuri Eri June from back position. She was not finishing it correctly, her hands weren’t flexed and her cinching hand was pulling out and away from my body instead of down, which would “tighten the noose” . My sensei came up behind her and said “Cody, you got her right where you want her!” I jokingly said, “I know, Sensei. Did I win yet?” And right at that moment he pulled the lapel she had been pulling away from her straight into alignment. I had a full dream that I was hanging out with my girlfriend, we went on a date and were cuddling. All of a suddden I was disgusted because I was all wet. I hate the sensation of wet clothes. I woke up right then and realized I had been out for a few seconds. But honestly, it was some of the best rest I’ve ever had.

The first time I actually went out was practicing defence from rear mount. My daughter (18) had a much better RNC than I realised. I thought I had it beat only to wake up a minute later with one of the black belts lifting my feet and calling my name. The kid's got a good RNC!

I've never gone totally out, but I've definitely looked into the void my fair share of time The first time I almost went out was as a white belt, my instructor at the time showing the class a lapel choke He was holding it while explaining some details and I guess didn't notice me tapping on his leg Probably because I was already on the way out and my taps were more like a gentle rub

I was in a judo class when I was seventeen. The instructor was teaching how a person loses consciousness when they are strangled by applying pressure with the gi in a cross choke. I sat down and thought it was silly only to blank out a few seconds in. I was woken up by the instructor hitting the heels of my feet and thought wow, I was as put to sleep in a matter is seconds! My first ever jiu-jitsu class was June of 1995 at a kung-fu studio in New York City with Craig Kukuk, about six months before Renzo came to take over. I was triangle choked by Matt Serra. I didn't pass out completely but I was definitely in the darkness for about one or two seconds before he released it (I didn't know to tap). The other guys told me, "Don' t worry about it. He's really good." Around that time Renzo once arm-in guillotined me from standing and then foot swept me. I spun in mid-air like an action movie fight scene. I think I sort of passed out because I remember waking up right before hitting the mat. It was surreal and awesome. I wish I could remember that technique. My first complete pass out with snoring and dreaming was just a few years ago from a bow and arrow choke.

I managed to escape it, luckily, but we were practicing bow and arrow chokes, and my partner just didn't have it. He asks the instructor for help, and he comes over, adjusts his grip on my collar, and starts to talk about his leg positioning and how to turn into it properly. That's when I notice that I can only see a small circle of light in the center of my vision, so hot bridge as hard as I can and turn to burst out of it. Instructor said "whoops haha" I couldn't hear the next technique taught because I wasn't quite lucid yet.

I’ve thought “he doesn’t have idea on what’s going on here” and swept him. He kept the hand on the collar, I’ve got into side control, he got the second hand and I’ve thought again “ now I just need to posture and armlock him”. Passed out couple seconds later

The one and only time I've gone completely out was when i was rolling with a brown belt. I was and still am purple and he got me in a bow and arrow. It was pretty tight but not enough to make me light headed so he eventually readjusted his position and cranked it on so hard I didn't even feel myself passing out. Next thing everything was black and I could hear music from the stereo in the gym. I didn't realize what was going on or where i was, I just thought I was waking from a deep sleep. I then had tunnel vision and could see my partners face as he was standing over me, I could hear his voice and see that he was talking to me but couldn't understand a word of what he was saying. The tunnel vision opened up a bit and i could see he was holding my ankles making my legs move in a pedaling motion to get the blood moving. I then realized where I was and what had happened. He told me that it freaked him out a bit because I foamed at the mouth when I was unconscious. Jits really is great fun.

Fast forward a couple minutes, and I was actually snoring on the floor, and all my coworkers were looking at me. It was a nice nap.

Only been put to sleep once so far but the first time I almost went to sleep was a much more valuable moment to me. 3rd month white belt was trying to perfect his baseball choke, he would tap blue belts with it regularly. Professor teaches the baseball choke on this day in class and says “even if you try to defend it with an armbar it won’t work.” Professor notices this white belt has a really good baseball choke and watches him for most of the sparring session. By the time it’s my turn to spar with him I’m ready for war. I pass to side ctrl but he has baseball choke grips already and is starting to turn away. I feel the lights going out as I’m pushing away from him with all my strength creating the space for an armbar. I look up at my professor with my face red as hell. We make eye contact, he gives me a nod of affirmation and I say fuck it and go for the armbar. Tap him out after almost being put to sleep then I look back up and see Prof smiling. Never felt so happy in jiu jitsu to have proved my professor and myself wrong that you actually can armbar as a defense to the baseball choke. Was a great lesson for me to try what I think will work even if someone tells me it won’t. Your experiences are yours and yours alone so go try new things and don’t take No for a answer!

I haven't been to sleep yet. I put a guy to sleep by accident, we were doing some triangle in class where you roll under the guy and get your legs into triangle setup position then tighten it--we were just learning the position so we were practicing it. And one time when I did it I thought I would just skip the step of tightening it because when I first locked it in it was already tight--so I skipped the tightening part and I believe the guy who was my uke was waiting for that not realizing it was already tight. So then he was waking up a minute later. I felt really embarrassed. I panicked a little.

It was the second match in my first tournament as a white belt. I kept trying to pass his guard but would end right back in it. He got me in a triangle and i couldnt get out of it. It wasnt too tight so i thought to my self that i would ride this one out for the last minute. He managed to get one hand inside my lapel and i tried to tap as everything went black. He let go and my body spassed me back to life and i lost the match

Well. We trained bow and arrow chokes for 3hours straight. Then i felt a warm fuzzy feeling, almost as if I where drunk, it was so infatuating. And then suddenly he let go and i said 5:31 realizing i had fallen asleep. Good that he stopped because i didnt sense it

Would have loved to see the choke. Sounds like a variation of a baseball choke with a late setup.

I’m a white belt and haven’t been to sleep yet. But, I did mess around and gave a smaller female blue belt my arm and she hit an armbar like it was ADCC. It made me squeak lol.

i remember getting choked out for the first time via rear naked choke. One second you're awake and alert and then bam it's lights out, just like that. It takes a couple of minutes after you wake back up for you to start to really process what the hell just happened to you.

I didn't say it took minutes to wake up, i said it takes a couple of minutes after you wake up to start to really process what happened.

I'm 30. It is 8 months since I've started BJJ. Before as was training judo as hobby. And so far I have not strangled yet. But there is 1 funny story. About my ears 😅. When it was 3th months of BJJ practices I had business trip to capital of our country for 2 and half days. Best schools of bjj is located in that city. Of course I took my gi with me. Luckily there was my best friend who practice bjj since 2014. I went to gym where he trains. We came early, so my friend offered to roll. I immediately started to warm up my ears. And my friend: "Hey come on. It will be an easy roll." This is how I've broken my ears. Not completely, but they will never be same again. So since that day #1 rule for me warm up! A special ears 😂

My very first time I broke a guillotine in a grappling tournament. I passed the guardand after quick consolidation moved to knee on stomach. Suddenly I found myself lying on my back... And my teammate slapping my face to wake me up 😴😅 That guillotine was better than expected

I had entered a tournament for only Roger Gracie Academies in London. I had got my blue belt for about a month or so before. I seemed to get through the matches fairly okay, I did not get any submissions. I then got to the finals, and this guy was clearly way above my skill level. I am not sure I had even been in the position he got the choke in before. I fought the feet and bamm! I was out, I dreamt I was in a match and woke up refreshed and happy. It was cool. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZrGpoxtbLV-r9k

I just saw your match, to be fair your opponent did transition quite quick to your back with the collar grip already. Regardless of the position, whenever i feel any type of threat to the neck at least 1 if not both hands should always go to defend the neck even if you get your back taken/mount. Watch the second match between Roger Gracie and Buchecha and the scenario is pretty much the same. Since you got it on vid i'm sure you learned a lot from it though.🥋👍👍👍
