@ahmf88 I totally agree with you. I should hate to live in a socialist state. Still less in a communist state. Grey, grey, grey! Let people make money! But this is not about allowing people to make money. And, correct me if I am wrong, I don't believe that Bernie Sanders wants to stop people making money. Bernie Sanders is a very moderate man. He appears not to have a radical bone in his body. This is about a fairer distribution of wealth in society. In America, the top 1% own almost all the nation's wealth, leaving almost nothing for the 90+% to get. Do you think that is fair? And why is this happening? Precisely because all benefits go to the top 1%. And also because the top 1% are hardly taxed at all. They get all the tax breaks. This is like the dreaded socialism in reverse! You would do yourself a favour to inform yourself about how the American economy works. 30% of the population do not even have healthcare, which is a human right. And why don't they have healthcare? Because they cannot afford it. America practises extreme capitalism. But there is something far, far better in between extreme capitalism and socialism. It is called a mixed economy. That is largely what Germany and France and the UK has. Go make your money, but the state will ensure that all get a good education and all are entitled to healthcare. There is nothing extreme about this. It has worked very well in the UK for decades. Even under Thatcher. It is only now being imperilled by our extreme Tory administration. By the way, Bernie Sanders has no intention of turning the USA into the Soviet Union! So don't lose any sleep over that!
@xelakram Жыл бұрын
@ahmf88 I majored in economics at university level, so I know exactly what capitalism is, or perhaps more accurately-stated, how it should be. You are right, America has turned into a private oligarchy. Unfortunately, though, America is held up as the example par excellence of a capitalist nation/state. But these days, it is anything but that. In fact, the USA could be described as plutocratic, oligarchic gerontocracy! It is a most unhealthy system, giving ordinary folk barely a look-in. How could a young person from an ordinary home hope to set up a business to compete with the extreme wealth of the 0.001%? (Or whatever the actual figure is.) He/she cannot. But that is not how capitalism should work. None of these extreme systems are good anywhay. Extreme capitalism is awful. Just take a look at all the people in the UK at the moment having to use food banks to put food on the table for their children, even when many of them are actually in employment! They are often referred to as the working poor. This is a disgrace. When I was growing up in the UK, I have never heard of the term food bank, because no food banks existed. Now, in the UK, there are said to be more food banks than there are bracnshes of Starbucks! And what about the homeless? No reasonable economic system would allow such a dreadful state to come about. Whilst I am all for people being able to become rich through their own effort and hard work, the gap between the superrich and the extreme poor is now enormous. When I was growing up, that used never to be so. This will all lead to no good place if nothing is done about it. This is a breeding ground for revolutions. And who wants to live through one of those? You, as a Russian, have pleanty of experience in history of such events. They are ugly and also lead to no good outcome.
@xelakram Жыл бұрын
@ahmf88 Private medicine in the USA is great at its best, but dreadful at its worst. No country spends more on healthcare than the USA and yet it has terrible outcomes. France, by contrast, has an excellent healthcare system, a system that Americans would call "socialized medicine". We in the UK also had a great National Health Service until the recent Tories got their mits on it. They are destroying and dismantling it, one step at a time. The fools want to introduce an American-style, private health system. It will destroy a wonderful system and will leave millions unable to afford any healthcare at all. In the UK, it has always been possible for the better off to avail themselves of private healthcare. Private healthcare is not prohibited at all. That was the best of both worlds. As for the middle class being destroyed, they are being destroyed under the current system, especially in the USA, because as the gap between the rich and the poor gets bigger, the middle class is being squeezed out altogether. We are returning to a neo-feudal system. It is obscene how rich some people have become! How many billions does one man need in one lifetime? How many mansions? How many super-yachts? How many private jets? There is nothing wrong with a man having billions, but there is something radically wrong with one man having hundreds and hundreds of billions when other men cannot afford to put food on the table for their kids. By the way, I would hate to live in a system like the Soviet Union. I cannot think of any worse system to live under. So please disabuse yourself of the notion that I advocate such a dreadful economic/political system. I certainly do not. But I do advocate more fairness for all. Not equality, but fairness. Give everyone the chance to live a decent life. Let everyone have shelter, and have enough food, clothing, a decent education and decent, free healthcare.

The comments in Bernie Sanders videos are always loaded with people saying "God bless Bernie" and "Love Bernie," but rarely do I see "Let's take Bernie's message to the streets and demand better treatment for the poor, the elderly, the working class." @@helenswan705 hi Helen 😊 I totally sympathise. Sadly the word Socialism has seen its definition distorted which I consider grossly unfair. I guess it's mainstream media who are responsible. It's as simple as helping a neighbour who has a car with a flat battery; you help them with a jump start and they can get to work. Buy one's Doctor a gift every Christmas as thanks for their kindness and compassion throughout the year. If a fellow work colleague doesn't have quite enough money for lunch, give them some cash. To me these are all definitions of Socialism in practice. The clue is in the name. I don't think we are alone, this much gives me faith. The only thing I can think of, is an unfounded comparison with the 1930's German Socialist workers party; maybe the mainstream have latched onto this and used it to tarnish the real principles of Socialism, which I think simply involves being the kindest person one can, and striving to better oneself as a person in order to play a positive role in the community? It's a truly worrying situation if these are qualities no longer valued Helen; it sounds like you have the same outlook and upbringing as me. At least we can take comfort from this. I think if enough of us can seek each other out, even if only online, hopefully we can gently encourage far greater numbers of people to rethink their understanding of Socialism. @@bighands69 He advocates against himself then by saying those who have more should pay more into the system and this upsets you? I'm far less upset when I hear that the son or daughter of hardworking people, particularly immigrants, becomes wealthy by being self made than I am by the many self entitled silver spoon people that we have in this country. It sounds like it's the "American dream" that's bothering you here. I didn't vote for Bernie when he ran for president, but that doesn't mean that I think that there is no merit in what he says. Never disappoints aye? What about when he completely folded to Clinton in 2016 and let down all his loyal supporters?
@daniellamcgee4251 Жыл бұрын
@@modfus Clinton was in the lead with 54% of the pledged delegates, whereas Bernie came second with 48% of the pledged delegates. Obviously the strongest Democratic candidate was the one to go against the Republican in the lead. Bernie was runner up, but not the winner, so he conceded and endorsed Clinton to try to minimise the risk of a Trump presidency. No matter if Bernie had conceded, or not, Trump would have won the Presidency thanks to the Electoral College. Clinton did win the popular vote, so Bernie did back a genuine winner.
