I was a Braves fan that absolutely hated the Yankees, but even I have to say that Posada and Pettitte deserve more HOF consideration than they've gotten. That being said, I have no idea what the BBWA was smoking when they allowed Williams to fall off the ballot. In a stacked lineup filled with stars (O'Neill, Tino Martinez, Jeter, Posada) aging veterans/former stars who still had something left in the tank (Chili Davis, Tim Raines, Darryl Strawberry) and some solid players who had some good years (Knoblauch, Scott Brosius, etc), Williams was the only guy I feared. Williams was the guy that drove that Yankee offense, especially in the post-season. Bernie may be the most underrated player of the last 30 years. He should absolutely be in the HOF.

I dont like any of those name core four fab five. Posada wasnt ready in 96 but they always slide him in there like if a sept call up batting under .100 These nicknames blur the lines of the legacies of Yankees. Makes Mattingly and Williams also less important to our overall history. Posada was important in 09 but a non factor in 96. Williams retired in 06 so couldnt be a factor. 2009 is too far away from the dynasty of late 90s. So we replace Bernie for Posada forever just for a cool nickname and to further push Bernie legacy down hell even Paul Oneill got his jersey retired before Bernie and he was an all star for Reds way before he got here. Bernie was a Yankee lifer and retired with the MLB record for postseason home runs runs scored and RBI. Mlb doesnt respect Bernie the way they should because the Yankees never respected him as much as Jeter Pettite O”Neill Clemens Cone Wells etc on and on

His career OPS+ is 125, same as another Yankee CF, Earle Combs, who is in the Hall of fame, but played only 12 years, compared to Bernie's 18. (Richie Ashburn's OPS+ is 111, over a 15 year career, and he's in the Hall). Bernie was the cleanup hitter for the most successful team in history. Well said. Bernie has been underrated/underappreciated because he was quiet and consistent (or "boring"). He wasn't Jeter (the guy that every woman wanted, and every guy wanted to be), Mariano (the GOAT at his position), or someone like Jorge Posada & Paul O'Neill (who wore their emotions on their sleeves). What is true, however, is that he was the team's best position player (if not the best player, period) during that dynasty. PS: The 1 thing I disagree with is that his defense is part of the reason he's been underrated/underappreciated. By that argument, Jeter should be ranked much lower than he is.

In fact during the 1996 Divisional and American Divisional Championships, if it werent for Bernie Williams, the Yankees most likely wouldnt have won either of those series. Divisional Round: Texas: 4G 7H 5R 3HR 5RBI .467 AVG American Round: Baltimore: 5G 6R 2HR 6RBI .474 AVG Texas Rangers: Game 3 series tied 1-1, Williams homered in the top of the first inning, then robbed Rusty Greer in the bottom half. His ninth-inning sacrifice fly tied a game the Yankees would eventually win. They would win the series the next day. Williams also hit two home runs in Game 4 to clinch the series. Baltimore Orioles: In Game 1, Williams would hit a game winning 11th inning home run off Randy Meyers to win the lead off game. In game 3 in Baltimore, Williams FBI siingle ties the game in the 8th inning, in which the Yanks scored 4 runs to win the game giving them a 2-1 series lead. In game 4, it was Bernie Williams's two-run home run in the top of the first off Rocky Coppinger that gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead, which they never relinquished giving them a commanding 3-1 series lead.

What changed is Steinbrenner getting suspended for 3 years. When he returned, he was still an impatient blowhard (& there were more examples of that besides what was mentioned in this video). Before the '96 season (Jeter's first full year), Gene Michael had to talk him out of trading Mariano Rivera to the Mariners for some shortstop named Felix Fermin. (Who's Felix Fermin? My point exactly.). In '99, Andy Pettitte wasn't pitching well, so Steinbrenner was ready to ship him off (but Joe Torre and Mel Stottlemyre had to talk him out of it). Hell, he hired Torre in the 95/96 off-season, & then tried to get Buck Showalter to come back during that same off-season. The Yankees won in spite of Steinbrenner

Very good all around player. He’s a role model for a lot of kids that grew up in the 90’s - especially for Puerto Rican kids. He’s never been involved in any controversy. He always carried himself with integrity and class so he was likeable to those of us who prefer a humble classiness to a flashy egomaniac

in 2004 when the yankees blew a 3-0 lead to the Red Sox Bernie and Matsui were the offense they had 10 RBIs each! which tied them for the 5th best CS all time as far as RBIs go... so no he was not simply an accumulator he had punches in bunches as well. and I also don't think MLB fans value a guy who can stay good enough to even be around and continue to produce enough. in order to accumulate you have to be good enough to be kept in a lineup when it counts. Bernie is the best Championship series player of all time. his slash lines are ridiculous. The Yankees simply do not make it to a few of those World Series without Bernie Williams

Bernie was a solid player, there was some talk that Bernie would be the first Yankee to get to 3000 hits. Obviously that didn't happen but it doesn't take away he was one of the pillars of those Yankee teams that went to and won all those World Series. Plus I have never heard a bad word about him.

From 1996-2001, Bernie was by far, the most feared hitter in that Dynasty Lineup. Switch Hitter, Batted 4th, was as clutch as they come.. Didn’t steal bases, but was very fast going extra bases, like 1st to 3rd or 1st to Home.. Bobby Cox wanted NO PART of pitching to him in the 96 & 99 World Series.. Walk-Off Bomb in Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS.. Walk-Off HR in Game 1 of the 1999 ALCS.. Huge HR in Game 3 of the 1996 World Series. I was at the game for his Walk-Off HR to clinch the AL East. I can go on & on.. Guy won a Batting Title, Gold Gloves & was as good a teammate as there was. He was #1 in Postseason HRs for a while, until Manny passed him. Guy should be a HOFer, but it’s fraudulent & only based on Reg Szn stat padding.. Thank You for making a video like this. Most creators just hate on the Yankees..

I loved this video. Bernie was my favorite player growing up. You should do a video about Alfonso Soriano and how underrated he was. Not necessarily just his time with the Yankees; but his career afterwards. As a Yankees fan, I alway laugh about how they discarded him in the A-Rod deal rather unceremoniously. He then went on to have a 40-40 season…. The last player to ever do so. Meanwhile we had the beautiful A-Rod years complete with all the postseason pathetically from 04-07. Not to mention the contract negotiations, steroid use etc. Don’t get me wrong… he did eventually help produce a championship in 09… but I always wondered what if we had kept Soriano.

Bernie Williams was always the scariest hitter on the Yankees in the 90's and 2000's. So clutch in the postseason
