On the latest episode of Bernie: The Podcast, I speak to environmentalist Bill McKibben. Bill is an activist and writer who is one of the leading voices on the impact of climate change as well as a dear friend of mine. He is the founder of the climate campaign groups 350.org and Third Act. He has authored a dozen books about the environment, including his first, The End of Nature (1989. We discuss the record heatwaves sweeping the globe as we speak, the growth of renewable energy and how much time we have to save our planet, and what a second Trump term would mean for climate change.

Any government that allows the private sector to become an existential threat to humanity is not legitimate. It does not deserves the consent of the governed. Our government should be peacefully abolished and peacefully replaced with a government that will enforce the will of the majority. Ours does not and never will. If that sounds absurd, it is what the framers did in 1787, when they peacefully abolished the Articles of Confederation, and peacefully replaced them with our currently outdated and increasingly dangerous Constitution. Governments are established to secure our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When a government fails to do that, it must be replaced. The framers knew it, and it is as true now as it was then. We must organize peacefully to establish a more democratic government. One that cannot be captured by special interests. America is ranked 29th on the Global Democracy Index. For the strongest power on earth, that is unacceptable. WE can be the best, and the world now needs us to prove it. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-14-making-a-new-american-constitution/id1592429626?i=1000571137797

We are newly “empty nesters” and members of ThirdAct. A huge sticking point I have been trying to expose for more than 30 years, when mass privatization of electrical grids was nearly complete, relates to just that; Electricity grids in the U. S. are now so largely controlled by private corporations and “equity,” that our fight is now primarily against big$ capitalists, on top of global warming and the climate change forthcoming. Thankfully, technology has essentially “caught up,” yet the big $ is now the larger foe.

For all of you who stand with Bernie and Mr. McKibben on this huge issue, don't wait for Big Fossil Fuel to change. WE need to "help" them change. Most plastics are LITERALLY petroleum and/or natural gas. We live in a supply & demand world economy. If a product doesn't sell, its production will cease. WE have to STOP buying plastic items and items packaged in plastic. WE have to let corporations know we want alternatives to plastic. WE have the power of our wallet! Use it! Educate yourself about plastic. It has many aliases, ie Spandex, polyester, nylon, dacron, microfiber, plush, Olefin, linoleum, acrylic to name a few. THINK. BEFORE. YOU. BUY. I rarely buy any groceries in plastic packaging. I buy meat wrapped in paper from butchers at the grocery stores. I only buy fruits/vegetables in bulk or in cans or glass, which can then be recycled. Read labels on clothes. When buying reusable bags, read the label. Don't buy a plastic reusable bag. Talk to store managers about selling cotten, jute or other natural fiber bags. WE have the power!

I've been living in a tent in Burlington for about 4 years. I can see a huge difference in just 4 years. Winters ate much warmer & this summer has been deadly for me as a cancer suffer already battling sepsis & dehydration. Burlington had very beautiful & mild summers. I never suffered heat stroke in Vermont before this year. It stayed hot & humid all night so my core temp didn't get a break to recoup. I was homeless in 120° Phoenix and had to call 911 for cardiac arrest almost weekly. I finally escaped to Prescott that also had record heat. Thank you Senator Sanders & Bill for educating us about this man-made catastrophe.

Bernie, I have to be completely honest with you. I think we should be calling this *environmental problems* rather than climate change. When I was growing up and in college, it was always called environmental problems. We discussed acid rain, urban/suburban sprawl, air pollution, water pollution, deforestation, soil and groundwater contamination, beach erosion etc. We need to go back and present the information the way it deserves to be presented. Otherwise we're doing our ecology a huge disservice. I don't know if this is something that you could bring up with Congress, but we need a major overhaul when it comes to the way we do environmental marketing. I went for a Masters of Applied Science in Ecology and Natural Resource Management. There are no jobs in this if you want to work with people and conservation. It's only GIS mapping and data. I know Mr. Kibben suggested that environmentalists become electricians, but not everyone is comfortable working with electricity or being on a roof. I hope the environmental field can evolve properly. Maybe you can help our country to start off-grid environmental communities where we can grow our own fruits and vegetables while also solving the food crisis we're facing.

America -and the world- needs to hear these two voices more frequently! And both Bernie Sanders and Bill McKibben don't just talk the talk, they walk the walk: they both drive EVs powered by sunshine on their roofs. People need to seriously commit to emulating their example and get rid of their tailpipes. Don't drink the Fossil-Fool Aid, earthlings!

It's truly a shame that neither major party actually supports climate change legislation that will really make a difference. If Bernie had been elected as our leader we may have had a chance but with the corporately funded Democrats and Republicans that we have now we are finished.

I live in Vancouver, BC. A few years ago city council passed a motion to stop giving permits for new gas and oil furnaces for space and water heating in new buildings. It took effect Jan 1, 2022. Province-wide such a ban is slated to take effect in 2030. With the building boom here, that's too late and will lock-in a lot of gas expansion. In Oct 2022 city elections changed the composition of Vancouver council from 5 neoliberals (NPA) and 6 progressives (incl. 3 Greens and mayor) to 8 neoliberals (8 ABC incl. the mayor, NPA changed its name to ABC) and 3 progressives (incl. 2 Greens). A year ago, the Green Party tried to pass a motion to also ban gas stoves in new buildings. It was defeated. Opposition called it racist to replace gas stoves with electric/induction ones. They said Asian food can't be cooked without gas. My Asian friends have proved otherwise and were incensed. 2 weeks ago a motion passed to revoke the ban on gas furnaces for space and water heating. The councillor who introduced the motion had met with a Fortis gas lobbyist a few weeks prior. Fortis is the gas monopoly in BC. The motion read like something a gas lobbyist would write. All 3 progressives voted against it as did 2 ABC councillors with the mayor breaking the tie via zoom. Getting gas and oil out of buildings for heat, hot water and stoves is the easiest thing to do and the dumbest thing not to do. Especially since buildings emit more than half of Vancouver's GHGs. Electricity in BC is over 90% hydro. BC has a shortage of heat pump installers and electricians but that's coming along. I'm from Québec. Heat pumps, electric baseboards, electric hot water and electric stoves are the norm there. And it's colder than BC. Québec's electricity is 98% hydro. The thing is Québec has no fossil fuel extraction to speak of and it has a more diverse economy. Whereas BC it’s real estate, the port, logging, mining and gas. It's building an LNG plant and wants to build 4 more. Our biggest export is coal. Even though the NDP (left of centre, pro-labour) government is taking measures to fight climate change, forest fires and floods and has increased the carbon tax, it lets fossil fuels dictate too much policy. The Union of BC Municipalities is having their convention next month. The sponsors are, amoung others, Fortis Gas, Canadian Ass. Of Petroleum Producers, TC Energy, Enbridge, New Car Dealers Association of BC. But also the Firefighters Ass. of BC, Ambulance Paramedics & Emergency Dispatchers of BC, Municipal Insurance Association of BC. With all the forest fires and floods and home insurance going through the roof because of it, you would think the UBCM would want to get off gas and oil. But it doesn’t take it seriously. Any mayor and city councillor, insurance, infrastructure contractors, fire fighters and emergency workers are well aware that municipalities are on the front line of climate impacts and adaptation. But they are also on the front line of climate mitigation with infrastructure, land use, planning, building codes, construction permits. Yet they continue to lock in oil and gas use with infrastructure designed to use oil and gas instead of renewables. BC is going into election in October. The NDP has decent people trying to do good policy. But fossil fuel lobby is tenacious. The opposition Conservatives don't think CO2 warms the climate and want to expand gas even more. The Canadian federal government, the Liberals, has created the best climate policy of any federal government so far (imposed a carbon tax on recalcitrant provinces that refuse to enact one on their own). Even so, their climate policies have been too little, too late and they've done it without really going after the oil and gas industry, mostly in Alberta, a petro-state like Texas. I feel sorry of Steven Guilbeault, the federal environment minister. I know he wants to do way more a lot faster but he's hamstrung by the prime minister's office. Trudeau knows better. But the fossil fuel lobbyists and the lobbyists of every industry that uses fossil fuels are tenacious. The opposition Conservatives want to do away with the carbon tax and every other climate policy because their base is in Alberta. They also want to get rid of the CBC public broadcasting. God help us.

PLEASE don't end this wonderful talk using the phrase 'The future of this planet is very very bleak". Let's talk in ways that will move people. What we are really talking about is millions or billions of humans dying and lots more suffering. The earth will survive. It's a big rock. People are motivated by 'safety'. So we need to frame the issue this way. How many of those 1-3 billion climate refugees will be saved? How many will simply die of starvation or war since their crops failed? That's what we should be talking about. Thanks you two are my heroes. (along with Greta, of course ).

Had I known that this conversation would evolve in to a political campaign message, I would never have listened! Our entrenched political duopoly has been complicit in our national decision-making for decades. "Finger-pointing" is another deceptive political practice. They are ALL complicit, Democrat or Republican oligarchs, are all in bed with the money-makers of the globe. This entire "touchy-feely" message is just more of the same. I weep for humanity.
