If Motown was a family then Berry Gordy was the father. Father's are known for making tough and unpopular decisions for the good of the family. When you take a close look at Motown there's no need to doubt that he made the record label an unqualified success. However, many of the artists that left Motown feel that they were not dealt with squarely. In the last episode Holland Dozer Holland, who were absolutely a large part of Motown's first decade of success quit in a flurry of lawsuits. This catastrophic resignation happened just as the Jackson 5 were laying down tracks at Motown;s Detroit headquarters Hitsvlle USA.
The Jackson 5 had trouble with commitments they made to Atlantic records soul music imprint Atco. Berry Gordy also had to contend with Richard Arons, whom it appears that Joe Jackson was attempting to leave out of the Motown deal. Meanwhile Michael. Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, and Marlon were laying down tracks and waiting for Berry Gordy to lay down a path and the go ahead to join the Motown LA era.
The Jackson 5 entered Los Angeles with visions of Disneyland and Malibu. For a few days the Boys enjoyed the sun and fun before they were sequestered away at the famous Hit Factory recording studio. Gordy's displeasure with the choice of tracks the boys recorded at Hitsville meant that he would be personally overseeing the making of their first album. This would put him in the path of an 1 year old wunderkind named Michael Joseph Jackson.

Although Berry shouldn’t have been managing “The Supremes” and “The Jackson 5” it makes a WHOLE lot of sense because when Motown transitioned to California out of Detroit, there was a lot riding on the success of the label. He couldn’t let those investors down.

They worked Michael beyond what they should have and ruined his voice. In the younger years they had him singing too high for his range and during his voice change years, he shouldn’t have been singing until after his voice had completely changed. That is why he lost most of his range little by little until he could no longer sustain. They ruined his voice and he often struggled during that time, with his voice sounding strained and even cracking at times. Berry Gordy as much he did for black music, he was also did some jacked up things to those same black artists. He couldn’t get past Joe and he wanted total control of them, that is why he wanted to manage them. Joe knew this and knew what Berry was up to. If he had his way, that group would’ve imploded irreparably. He would’ve did to them what he did to the Supremes.

Between Gordy and Joe, those kids had no lives. They worked them to death. It must’ve been extremely difficult for them, but was it worth it? No wonder they were completely screwed up.

I was twelve about to turn 13 years old and in the eighth grade when the Jackson Five released ‘I Want You Back’. It took a while to hear the complete song on the radio from the beginning, and then it was trying to figure out who made it, and where they were from. All that information came from the album after my older brother finally got it in about December 1969. I got to see them perform the song, for the first time, on the Andy Williams Show on Saturday night 01/31/1970. The rest of 1970 was spent trying to catch them on television again, as they got more popular from releasing more hits; like Dick Clark’s ‘American Bandstand’ three weeks later, (missed because of no prior notification of their appearance) where they debuted their next single ABC, and later in the summer on Ed Sullivan again, and the Jim Nabors Show, where they debuted ‘The Love You Save’, and ‘I’ll Be There’, respectively, both CBS shows missed because we couldn’t get CBS channels during the antenna era where stations broadcasting those shows couldn’t be seen if they were too far from your viewing area). Unfortunately, I didn’t see them perform again on television until April 1971 on the Diana Ross Special. By September 71 they were big enough to have their own Saturday morning cartoon and their own television special.
