New chapter Friday in the next Young Animal issue. Actually went ahead and ordered it from Japan just out of sentimental value. It's gonna be a whole tribute to Berserk and Miura, and Volume 41 confirmed for December. Best get to preordering before gentlemen of ill repute and asshole-ish nature buy up everything.

I think Wyald does something a lot of people don’t think about. He gives context to the eclipse. Think about it: Guts nearly dies trying to fight this one Apostle, and the entire band is scared shitless by this one guy. Now, they are surrounded by them. It really makes the situation feel all that more hopeless.
@shadowofhawk55

I think Zodd also does that, but from what I have heard about Wyald he takes that moment and increases it by Red Wedding + Edgelord Drow backstory.

Not only that, Guts coming out on top against Wyald actually makes it more believable that he ends up surviving the eclipse while mortally wounding dozens of apostles in the process. Even though Wyald's part in the story is kind of over the top, I still think there's a reason why it's there.

@@mageofvoid4282 Also Griffith was always a dickhead, as stated in this video, he downright enjoyed seeing his enemies fall in front of him. Also the duel scene reveals a LOT of how Griffith's head works, as well as the "corpse bridge" scene. In the end, he was (as a human) a selfish brat who wanted everything to be his, and couldn't tolerate anything getting out of his control, and once he lost all that he had due to his own fuck-ups, he killed his comrades and friends just to run away from his pathetic existence, because let's be real, all apostles end up becoming demons to hide from their weaknesses as a human, with maybe the exception being the apostle knights of Fantasia (specially the hunter demon, the little he said about his past makes me believe he just got so into being a hunter that he became a demon to make his hunts eternal, which you know, at least he's honest with himself, and is a similar motive to Zodd's(and yeah, Zodd is also clearly another exception,the dude is just a Khorne daemon made flesh in the Berserk universe,and I love him for that))

I laughed a lot at the Shadow People joked. Because I died when I was 4 years old due to an abscess infection in my throat. According to family, it happened for over a minute and I was brought back. But I used to have nightmares of shadows shaming me of not leaving with them. I didn't understand the concept of death. So it was strange. It was serious, because I had to relearn how to walk and talk. My dad worked 3 jobs and wasn't there when I walked for for first time. He told me, he felt like he got to get a 2nd chance and teach me to walk again. That is why I found Guts' birth oddly relatable. More so of circumstances of life.

I like how Griffith explains the nature of the Crimson Behelit to Guts, that it requires its user to literally sacrifice blood and flesh to make his greatest wish come true, and in the end describes it as, “Neat, huh?” And somehow Guts doesn’t find Griffith describing human sacrifice as “neat” even REMOTELY strange or concerning. This is one reason why I hate Griffith as a man, but love him as a villain. He is EVERYTHING I fear in human leaders. A man who proclaims he wants the power to change the world and fooling everyone into believing he will use that power for good. However, while everyone celebrates his charisma, to those who know EXACTLY what kind of evil he is, they will know that he is proclaiming his dark intentions to the world and helplessly watching it be received with thunderous applause. Griffith’s first and last conversations with Guts as a human being literally revolves around how Griffith believed he OWNED GUTS. Like he’s not a man, but property; like his prize racehorse or most effective guard dog. He has a completely deluded and ever-changing regard for Casca that oscillates between her being one of his most powerful chess pieces and also realizing her to be the woman he could have always had but never saw it till it was too late. He sees nothing in the world as it is; merely seeing things that he can control and things that he has yet to control.

I see Griffith a sad idiot. He was someone who had so much ambition and had the strength to carry it out but he believed that was all he needed which was the start of his demise. He thought he could suppress his longing for friendship believing he was above it all, better than human, but he was so wrong. The lie that came out of his mouth that his subordinates weren't considered his friends was a lie or at least not true in terms of Guts. When Guts set out to find his purpose or dream, Griffith was in such denial the fact that Guts would dare to leave, after all, his subordinates were his possessions not people with agency. I feel like Griffith treated the people below him as possessions in order to feel less regret when they do invetibaly die because of his ambition. However, he was still human and thus longed for an actual connection with someoneone but that was something he himself couldn't agree with. What a weirdo.

i mean, i have some sympathy for griffith during the golden age arc, like he said something he didnt mean literally and his best friend got impacted by it and made a decision to leave, during the duel between guts and griffith, griffith was actually scared he was going to kill guts, only to lose someone he considered an equal. in the end, his petty response to this loss got him tortured, which made him crippled and unable to even carry out his dream which was literally sitting infront of him, and he had the misfortune of being rescued by the one who made his dream waver, then he had to live out his miserable dream without dying from any kind of pain during his torture, he was at his lowest point when he was reunited with the behelit, and he was given an audience with the god hand, who proposed to him that if he sacrificed the thing that was precious to him, that being the entire band of the hawk (who didnt give a shit about dying and wanted to help griffith achieve his dream) , he would become not just an apostle, but a literal god hand member, which allowed him to achieve his dream with zero trouble. I mean, anyone's bound to accept that offer, throw away something that you used as a stepping stone, become powerful physically and have an army of monsters that's strong enough to erase the human population.

@@xybeasto for griffith, at that point after a year of torture and thinking of nothing but guts and the death of his dream, the choice was no choice at all. One of the worst gut feelings I got reading berserk is when the eclipse begins, and the apostles are saying how excited they are for the festival as if it was a sure gone conclusion that griffith would sacrifice the band of the hawk even if it was ultimately his decision, and they were completely right. I thought the same as guts the first time. That griffith would never do something so heinous

Honestly I LOVE the idea of evil, the idea that Man can't accept their own failings/random disasters and seek to blame ANYTHING just to make it make sense to them accidently giving them exactly that is such a twisted concept. In summary: we always seek to pass blame for anything traumatic, and The IoE will grant us EXACTLY that...
@whiteeye3453
@whiteeye3453 2 жыл бұрын
"First of all, it is not simply "blaming some supernatural entity for misfortunes". The Idea of Evil is consequently the collective desires of humanity to find reason for their existence, and as well as the one that makes those reasons. It is not so as simple as creating a goblin out of a lego block because we blame it. The Idea of Evil, in my view, is a philosophical concept on why things happen in life, we shape our destiny through our actions and/or it is destiny that shapes our actions. Also, giving "basic education and science" wont stop the "influence" of the Idea of Evil. I assume you think that their are monsters in Berserk because the (people-are-dumb-and-don't-have-basic-education-and-science = supernatural beings). Again, NO. As I said, the Idea of Evil exists because of our desire to find REASON to our existence. Science, conceptually, is the product of us finding logic and REASON in the world. Therefore, in theory, it actually is part of our desire to find reason, meaning it is in a way, contributing to the Idea of Evil. It seems that many people here misunderstood the Idea of Evil as the one that creates supernatural beings because we want someone or something to blame. No, absolutely not. It is not simply just that. If you think of it that way, then I am afraid you missed the point of Berserk."

Personally, I consider Wyald necessary, and while he seem like filler, he lends to a pretty harrowing chase sequence during the Hawk’s escape, not to mention, I find his brutality and violent nature adds to the wide scope of how the many and different Apostles function. Zodd was violent, yes, but he sought the thrill and glory of battle more than senseless bloodshed, and as we saw at Doldrey, he even aids Guts indirectly. Rosaline, as we will see later, still acts like the child she is still is at heart. The Serpent Lord had a method to his hunger for human flesh. Wyald just doesn’t care so long as he gets to kill, and his sadistic brutality is a means to drive fear into the heroes, to show that these monsters are unlike anything they’ve faced before, even unlike Zodd. There is no reasoning with Wyald or any hope that he will let you live like Zodd did to Guts and Griffith. If you are to live, the only way is to win. It’s a perfect setup for the future of the series and the sort of monsters Guts must later fight, as we saw in the Black Swordsman arc, but there, he was already experienced in fighting them. Wyald is essentially Guts’ first real battle with an Apostle that he must conquer himself. At least, that’s how I see his purpose in the narrative. And to give the Golden Age movies one bit of credit, I like the addition to the Eclipse where when Guts charges at Griffith after severing his arm, instead of the demons immediately pinning him down, Guts is given the chance to strike at Griffith, only to be stopped by Griffith’s new reality-bending powers. Griffith remains unfazed, as if he allowed Guts to come so close just to show him how powerless he is, and even the God Hand are amused, dictating how a mere mortal like Guts can do nothing to his enemy, yet are taken aback when they see Guts’ arm slightly shift, winning against Griffith’s power ever so before he is flung into the air and promptly pinned down.

I think the whole "Guts getting inmovilized by Griffith" scene was also a nod to the "Black Swordsman" Arc. where something really similar happens, with him getting close to Griffith but then the Brand almost makes him faint, the Godhand mocking him for his useless struggle, to then be surprised by Guts raging up and swinging his sword at Femto. Some parts are different, yes, but the general gist of both scenes are almost the same. If it was intentional, then props to them, BSA doesn't get enough love

Something to Note about the King of Midland and his relationship with his daughter is that it's implied that the reason he's so obsessed with his daughter is that when he lost his extremely beloved first wife It basically broke him, and Charlotte looks exactly like her mother. Basically the King is so protective of Charlotte because he basically is using her as a surrogate for his wife who was everything to him. Still just as fucked up, but adds some layers to him.

Griffith is a total sociopath and it's impossible to read his character over this arc as caring for any character other than himself. His fantasy of a quiet life with Casca and their son Guts is a total power fantasy because of the contrast with his disabled and defeated self. Also just watched this all in one sitting. You did an amazing job and I can't wait for the next arc.
@samgreenblatt7074
@samgreenblatt7074 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with that assertion. If Griffith didn't care for the Hawks at all, he wouldn't have been able to sacrifice them. The whole point of a sacrifice is that it's tearing out a piece of your own soul and letting evil in, as the Godhand tell us in the last arc. Don't forget, it was him seeing the dead boy that made him prostitute himself to Gennon, because he didn't want to lose more people. He even seems to feel bad at one point for all the bad stuff he's done to the nobles(as well as making Guts do a bunch of the heavy lifting with Foss and the Queen). You'll never get me to say he was a great guy when he was still human, but frankly, I find the idea that Griffith was completely evil from the get-go to be a reductive and simplistic reading. I prefer the idea that he was struggling between his friends and morality and his ambition, and in the end, chose his ambition, because I think that makes for a more well-rounded and three-dimensional character.

@@samgreenblatt7074 His humanity was there before, but it gradually began to fade away the more people died at his hand. He knew, even as a kid, that the risks would be significant. There would be pushback and bloodshed. He still wanted his kingdom, so he felt he had to push out his humanity, piece by piece, until it became more about being in charge of everything in sight, because if even one thing falls out of place, everything would fall apart, and it would be all for nothing. The great irony is that it eventually does, but it happens at HIS hands, an act that he didn't need to commit.

@@samgreenblatt7074 right on man. I feel exactly the same and I hate how so many people don't understand this. Griffith risked his life for guts multiple times. He legit cared about the band of the hawk. He ended up sacrificing them because he didn't want the fallen to have died for nothing. Most of the band was already dead at that point and in his mind they had already dedicated their life to his cause so he decided that by sacrificing the few remaining he could honor them all by accomplishing their mission. Like you said if he didn't care he wouldn't have been able to sacrifice them. And the behelit only activates at a person's lowest point after their ambitions have failed them and they are tortured. I bet most people would have accepted that deal after going through what he did. It feels good to think griffith was a no good monster because only a monster could do that but in reality he represents the best of us and even he wasn't strong enough to resist.

2:07:05 This isn’t a dream of a life he could have had of he chose Casca, this is a dream of what lies in his future if he stays the way he is, Casca takes care of him, the Band separates, they have a kid, and Casca takes care of him, she feeds him, he has a blanket on his legs like an old man. This isn’t the future he dreamed about, but it’s the future he sees himself having if he continues on this path. And plus he can’t speak, so it’s not like he could voice any distaste with naming the kid “Guts”. 2:48:30 Also, I believe that Casca and Guts’ child was killed during the R-word scene during the Eclipse, it would explain why she was bleeding so heavily down there and also explain it’s screwed-up fetus-like appearance, it was never able to fully develop, it was killed/corrupted by Femto to serve as his vessel in the imitation eclipse

I personally feel like that dream is HIS interpretation of what’s going to happen if he continues to this path , notice how Casca & Griffith’s child in the dream is his child , which makes zero sense because we already know she was pregnant with Guts child , he only knows at this point that they have been being closer together than they were while he was leading the Band of The Hawk and that is really it. Griffith cares about his army, not because they're his companions, but because they're his possessions. His assets. The toys for his war game. He needs them alive in order to get his own kingdom. They're just a means to an end. And he ended up putting too much reliance on Guts, the man who actually managed to leave him. Griffith also doesn't like to think of the deaths required to get his kingdom, not because he genuinely feels bad about being the cause of it, but because that guilt DISTRACTS him. It's an obstacle, something he wants to dispose of so it doesn't slow him down. So when the Godhand offered to give him a more reliable means of achieving his kingdom AND remove a chunk of his humanity, he no longer needed the Hawks. And for good measure, he knowingly hurt Guts and Casca to punish them for DARING to try and defy his control. Griffith was never a good person. He always possessed genuinely evil qualities and desired to purge his good side. But then, we all do. That's what free will allows us to do. We can either embrace our spiritual purity, or give into our material desires. It's a matter of choice. And Griffith chose the Bad Future.

I think the vision before the eclipse is Griffith seeing what future he could still have. And the way he’s drawn he doesn’t look happy, or even content. He never cared for or loved her, she was just a tool he could manipulate. And this is just him telling himself what his future looks like. Guts and the rest of the hawks would abandon him, because they were in it for the dream, but Casca was in it for Griffith. He tried to choke Guts because he blames him for leaving. But really if either of them had just talked to each other it could have been avoided. And he feels he has to blame Guts, but “if you think someone ruined your life, you’re right, it was you”. He knows even in his ruined state he can still manipulate her, and him falling on her is definitely him trying to reassert himself and have some agency. Give her what she always wanted. And that he sees that vision of the future and tries to kill himself shows he would rather die than live out a comfortable “small” life with her. But he doesn’t want to die, and the Behelit gives him the option. That fate would give him back the behelit at his lowest moment shows how the God Hand manipulates the world and calls it Causality.

Thank you for covering the lost chapter. It gives me a lot more perspective and understanding of where this was going past what we got. The author often spoke of it as though there were mirrored parts. The idea of evil was probably mirrored in some concept of good to be revealed (or not) later on. Honestly, I don't think we would have gotten such a reveal because this was written decades prior, but I still feel like it was heading that way, as some of the later events and dealings with the fairies talked about these greater powers as being more like representations of ideas and concepts/emotions in the psyche of mankind and if I recall, screwing with the world tree made this all the more a reality. Guts and Griffith are twins in many ways, mirroring each other, and as the lost chapter sheds light on Griffith's side, I can get an idea as to where they were going to go with Guts next before the final resolution.

These videos are great, the manga panels can get a little confusing during those big action moments, so its nice to have these to make sure everything was interpreted properly after reading.

I left KZbin on as I fell asleep last night, when I woke up, this was playing. I had no clue what it was, I had never even heard of "Berserk" before. But I am a fan of the Genre. After only 5 minutes of watching, I told myself "I am definitely going to buy these graphics novels", by nearly the end I was hooked. This has the potential to be one of the best stories i'll ever read. I stopped after the rape of caska because I didnt want to ruin the entire story. This has the potential to be one of the best stories ever told by Graphic Novels. I understand why its not mainstream, due to the Graphic nature of the storytelling and art. But its so extremely true to the nature of humans, to the deepest darkest desires, to the trials and tribulations we face in our lives and the rewards or repurcussions we face after decisions. Wow. so amazing. I am exited to buy the first book.

Genuinely one of the most captivating KZbin videos I’ve ever watched. As an anime only fan you really showed me a new perspective that I didn’t have watching the 1997 anime. Really wish I could give 2016 a chance but I just can’t do it.

Griffith wasn't lying when he told princess Charlotte he doesn't respect his friends as equals. She is a naive young girl who sees him as a valiant hero, so speaking ill of his friends only harms his attempts to seduce her. Griffith is essentially a charismatic narcissist. He only "cares" for people as possessions who serve his agenda. He literally tells Guts "You're mine now" after winning their duel, and when Guts bests him in their rematch, Griffith's self-esteem is completely shattered by losing his prize possession.

“You’re the only one who could make me forget my dream.” Cuts to a panel of them laughing together arm in arm on the battle field. Guts was Griffith best friend. Griffith just threw it all away before he knew what he had. The same way Guts has multiple times

The weapon shown at 1:15:51 is the 'Katar', a dagger used by trained warriors who practiced the martial art called "Kalaripayattu" in mediaeval kerala, a state in south India. I practiced 'Kalari' for 4 years in a kalari temple close to my home. We used the weapon with their edges beaten till blunt so that it was safe for use. It was heavy and painful to hold at the hilt because it strains our palm. Also when I was 8 I remember seeing one of the practitioners wielding the 'Urumi', the multibladed flexible sword that Silat used. He was a very old man but he swung the sword with ease, it was very loud too it sounded like a thousands of metal sheets bending at the same time haha. It's crazy how well miura knew about the Indian culture, history and architecture. A legend.

I feel that Griffith did genuinely think Guts couldn’t be his friend, or rather he thought he thought that. When it came down to it and Guts left, that’s when Griffith’s philosophy came crashing down.

Fun fact: I am woman! When I heard about Casca's period problems I thought it was silly, until I was watching a video from SciShow or something, talking about periods. You can in fact have a fever, nausea, or even pass out. I've got a brutal period, but I can't say I've ever passed out 0.0

Griffith is the devil for her as he r32pes her infront of the man she loves and kills her child taints it also . In berserk there is a line griffith says that gods and the devils are the same i think chapter 06
