Jones was passing before it was acceptable. He was a bad ass. I will never forget Bert.

Bert Jones was my idol . I took a lot of ribbing from my friends because here I was a New Yorker and I am a Baltimore Colts fan and Bert Jones fan and till this day I don't regret it . Towards the end he took a pounding and never complained he was Peyton before Peyton and even got tossed away like Peyton and Johnny. Thank You Mr.Jones for showing me true sportsmanship #7. That number needs to be retired

I loved his answer about Robert Irsay. Irsay took a great franchise, and ran it into the ground. He alienated the fans along the way.

True but the stadium was a dump with and they couldn’t even sellout during the 3 years that they won the division from 75-77. A local business bought up enough tickets so the New England game in 1977 could be shown locally. The playoff game the following week against Oakland was blacked out.

This was great - one of my favorite quarterbacks growing up. Tough player with a great arm.

I got my picture taken with Bert during a convention featuring the '75-'77 Colts. After the picture was taken I turned to him and said, "You were a great player."

I never saw this episode until just now. Very sad for me. Brings back a lot of memories. Bert Jones is my favorite athlete of all time. He was a GREAT QB. If the injuries had not mounted up he would be in the Hall of Fame. What got me liking John Elway was that Elway was very much like Bert Jones - but Jones was better. Jones was a great athlete, a sensational pure passer, and a great leader. Oh what could have been. If guys like Jones played in today's game they would be considered ELITE and on the same level as Rodgers and others or better.

I respect Jones for being a straight shooter. He didn't mince words about Bob Irsay. He was proven right because the Colts continued to be bad until he passed away in 1997. The next year, they drafted Peyton Manning and became a solid organization in the 2000's.

You nailed it. Irsay was an idiot.

I'm glad Bert spoke up for himself. The profile was insulting...and they showed it with him sitting right there. Downright disrespectful! I've been saying it for years: Elway BEFORE Elway.

Peyton before Peyton 👍👍👍

John Butz I would definitely say Elway is a better comparison: arm strength, MOBILITY (none of that for Peyton), and all-out toughness. No disrespect to Peyton, he’s an all-time great, but he Jones has different games. The only real similarity was the uniform.

Much like the San Diego Chargers and Gene Klein. Colts had a cheapskate owner who allowed John Dutton, Ted Hendricks Raymond Chester and others to get away. No wonder John Elway said no way. The way Inside the NFL said goodbye to Len Dawson and Nick Bunocantti was deplorable.

If not for the injuries and poor ownership he could have been a HOFer.
