Bespoke Veneering For A Jaguar Mk2 | Top Gear Handcrafted

You would never guess that inside Ged’s garden shed he’s restoring wood trim and veneer for some of the most iconic classic British cars. Ged and his son Daniel have re-veneered Sir William Lyon’s Jaguar XJ6 and even worked on cars for members of the royal family. There are only four or five people that do this type of specialist work in the UK and few people know how involved the process can be. In this instalment of Handcrafted, Ged and Daniel are restoring a clock binnacle from a Jaguar Mk2. Watch as they transform this aging wood component to its former glory.

There's someone like this in New Zealand who restored my Rolls Royce trim and it took him about 3 months to do since he just does it in his garage in his spare time. I was skeptical but sure enough the result was even better than a factory finish. Truly amazing skills and patience needed. Sadly a lot of these skills are getting lost now because people retire and young people and no longer interested in picking up these skills...

Very nice! Interesting the way the pre XJ Jaguar wood was originally done-the whole part being veneered in the light Walnut sap wood which acts as a cross banding, and then the darker face burr Walnut over that. Edges and angles then planed/sanded away to expose the lighter sap wood. This is what many assume are inlay strips, but are actually just exposed areas of cross banding playing that decorative role. Good stuff, make you wonder how they built them for the price!

Howdy UK wood guys, done massive wood myself, Rolls, Bentley, MBZ, Jag, Packard, Horsch, woodie's, structural body wood, steering wheels, limo bars. Back in the 70's I used lacquer, 25 coats needed, in the 80's I switched to resin, same as RR & MBZ, it builds quicker and shrinks less. Just a tip, you guys do great work. I used to do veneer work on vintage Rolls-Royce cars. These were mostly Silver Clouds and Phantom V cars. One of the weird problems I came across which few people think about is the book-matching process. You have to really look at the veneer with a mirror so that you don't wind creating an unpleasant image. It's very easy to create demon or bear or somebody's relative in the veneer. The human eye always wants find faces in patterns.

Commendable work, congratulations. One small comment: in my days, cotton wool wrapped around a cotton cloth, soaked in the liquid and subsequent hand rubbing was the preferred method to a spray gun. It penetrates the pores much better. This is the way I specify to have it done when I have substantial furniture restored, accepting the extra cost.

I have yet to see a someone do this to bmw e46 wood trim. I contacted a few guys on KZbin who do these Jags and Range Rovers and they all say “it’s the same process” Well why is there not one single thing online of someone actually completing this process on e46 Myrtle or Birch trim?
