I was all for Upscayl, then you mentioned the line,… which has been mentioned in other comparison videos too. So I discarded Upscayl from my mind, and was feeling Pixelcut all the way. Then you redeemed Upscayl in the end, making it a great teaching moment. I’m going to use both, depending on the device I am on. And THANK YOU for showing a comparison with Photoshop. Instead of waiting 140minutes, i just use Replicate to upscale. Its amazing. It is using the exact same upscaler as dgb, but with wait time of 3 seconds (in my experience at least). Same product, but better experience, limits were so big, that i dont think about them. Upscayl and Replicate win it for me. No doubt. At least for free versions

Would be interesting to see if these upscalers can improve Photoshop's Generative Fill, seeing as the generated content is quite low-res. Thanks for the heads up on these upscalers, Unmesh!

Generative fill is still maxed out on 1024x1024 tiles. So you have to make those fills tile for tile to achieve best quality. And often it's an scaling issue, sometimes scaling an image down to its best detail or sharpness point, can archive better outputs.

Great video! There is another tool called Chainner that's designed for batch compositing with nodes, and allows to do the same upscale things as Upscayl with whatever model you download from hugging face :3 and it's free and open source !

Not too keen on Upscayl. Standard setting proved skin tones were smoothed too much but ultramix balanced proved better but the colour then needed rebalancing as it was cooler than the original. I suppose its effectiveness will be different depending on the subject matter. Thank you for your invaluable videos though... they are appreciated.

Hey Unmesh - THANK YOU!! I had a low res photo (video capture) of a friend that has passed that I wanted to upsize and print for the family. I had tried GIMP, but it was still blurry. Upscayl was awesome! I tried several options, but the 4x ultrasharp worked best for me. I've had an 8x10 printed and framed and will give it to the family.

Happy New Year! I've been using Upscayle for a while. Although it's great, it does tend to smoothen certain areas out and increase the contrast for a perceived increase in quality. Overlaying it with the original image can help a bit. For free, Upscayle is by far the best. Most computers up to 3 years old will do it with no problem. Thanks as always. 👍

In PS's defense, the higher contrast does make the others look more like "AI art" while PS keeps it looking like the exact same image with slightly more fidelity.

The results are so similar because I am guessing that they all use the opensource Real ESRGAN upscaler model. Which you can use locally with installations of AUTOMATIC 1111 of ComfyUI and in that way choose other free upscalers as well.

I ' ve done that and Topaz is so much better. I used it on old black and white photo which was in a very low resolution. Topaz was more accurate and you still have the option of face recovering (which is adjustable). After the comparison I uninstalled upscayl since I won't use it when I have the option of Topaz.

My verdict of Upscayl: the "Digital Art" model is very impressive for digital art. The default model is good at increasing the resolution of old pictures, but doesn't seem to further increase that of modern high res pictures. All other models don't seem to do anything noticeable.

Hey I've found this video accidentally :) Dgb lol admin here. You made me smile with that queue joke - it always depends how large are the images in front of you in the queue - how hungry are the other customers.. :) I am doing my best to lower the queue, but there are quotas for new hardware from the Google side. I guess the other platforms are using the free, or very cheap hardware, I am getting them for the full price for them. I have few own-trained AI models as well for different purposes. And yeah the best platforms are using the Real-ESRGAN for upscaling. The tiny difference is either in the parameters , or how well trained is the model. Thanks for the video, good to know that my project is still usable for the no-rush people :)

I tried to use Pixelcut, but uploading wouldn't do anything (either by dragging or browsing). I installed Upscayl, and it wasn't bad (definitely better than Photoshop), but it on the photo I needed upscaled it didn't do anywhere near the quality that Unmesh got (no, I wasn't asking for extreme change - just the default 4X). Perhaps Unmesh was starting with better photos - mine is poor quality and was shrunk before it got to me (the head of the person was only 140 pixels tall), which is why I needed help. I don't know if DGB would do better, but probably not - I think these tools need a minimum amount of detail to work with.

The problem with brilliant upscalers is that if you send a prospective client a low res sample they upscale and never pay. I had enough problems when using film, people would buy a 7x5, then take it to a shop using a colour photocopier and get a 16x12 for a fraction of the cost of a chemical print. Now I can't even risk sending out thumbnails. Technology sometimes just sucks.

I honestly don't know what happened but half of the pictures i took didn't shoot in raw but instead i got a very low quality 1mb JPEGS.... i have been searching online since december last year for free image upscalers but they always ask me to pay after upscaling one image.
