I have a Savage model 110-E that my dad bought for me in 1985. Heavy trigger but consistent. Heavy rifle too. My brother had a beautiful Ruger model 77. Both chambered in 30-06. I always had better groups than my brother. We had some fun competitions. We deer hunted in the mountains of WV. I was young so the weight of that 110 never bothered me. Great old rifle that still shoots amazingly well. Sadly, my brother passed away 1.5 years ago. Enjoy your time while you have it fellas, you never know when things will change! Make those memories!!

Howa 1500 for me. Solid machined receiver with integrated recoil lug, excellent two stage trigger, three position safety, one piece bolt with sako style claw extractor. Upgrade the stock with whatever you want and be happy. It's a real quality rifle. Buy it from Weatherby if you want a nice stock out of the box.

The clear winner, HOWA 1500. It's lightweight, shoots under moa/.25 inches with 150 or heavy 180 grain. It has every feature that made the Winchester pre 64' great, and added an adjustable trigger. Not so long ago You could pick up a barreled action between $400 and $500. I don't own a Mossberg but seeing the comments on here most say pass on them. The CZ at $1300 is not budget friendly imo, and the groups were disappointing to say the least. Thank you Ron, to test the HOWA 1500. 😊

FYI, the CZ 600 American retails around 750-800, much less than the MSRP quoted. I have one in 30-06 and I love it. You can leave magazine in locked position and load it like a blind mag from the top. I don’t think there is another rifle in that price point that looks so good or ticks so many boxes.

The 600 Alpha is even less, around $590, I have a Lux, Alpha and a Range. They all shoot under 1 moa at 100 yards. The Range (6mm creedmoor) , shoots 5 shots under 1/2 moa, CZ's Guarantee claim, is it will shoot 5 shots under 3/4 MOA at 100 m with match ammo., I was using federal match . I think they had the MSRP of the Range, it's more of a bench gun. I was a little frustrated when they couldn't figure out the safety, especially when Ron said, "we got to take the stock off and fix it"; I'm glad they figured it out.

Great series. I have a BAR and a M1-Garand in 30-06. Love to shoot that caliber as well as .308. I have not jumped on the new cartridge train as of yet but that’s not due to fuddness, I am just still researching which rifle caliber has the mid to high average of punch and range and not too pricey. Love me some Ron and this series rocks. Also Joseph is good add to the channel.

Been waiting on this series. My favourite cartridge! Yes. Everyone has a different budget, but comparing $1,000+ rifles to a $500 rifle isn't fair. Your budget rifles should have been the Mosssberg you used, a Savage Axis, and a Ruger American. THOSE are low-budget entry rifles. I have very few rifles that top above $1,500 and they ALL shoot well. The rifles I have chambered for .30-06 are not high-end. I have a Mossberg 100 ATR that shoots 5/8" groups all day with my loads in all weights I have a Savage Axis (I don't really like it because of the cheap stock, but it shoots 13/16" groups with Federal blue box ammo, and so I won't reload for it). I have a Savage 111 with a laminated thumbh9le stock (that put the price up into the $1,200 range) that shoots CLOVERLEAF groups with reloads. I have a re-barrelled K-98 Mauser with open sights that easily shoots 2" groups with reloads (this is on its way to becoming a 35 Whelan for a bison hunt next winter). As my most expensive rifle, I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye (purchased second-hand) that shoots 1/2" groupswith 165gr Corelokt ammo. Being an "everyman" hunter, my scopes are not high-end, either, but I fill my tags every season, no matter which tags I get.

On cooling the barrel, they make battery powered fans that you insert into the rifle action. These blow air into the chamber, through the barrel and out the muzzle.

Ron. Dropping floor plate with a picatinny rail across the action can easily be loaded from the bottom. Actually, I load ALL my floor plate rifles this way. Open the floor plate. Turn the rifle upside down and point a bit low. Drop 3 rounds in. Close the floor plate as you give the rifle a shake. Open the action. Everything is ready to go. Chamber a round.

Kind of expected a Ruger American to be there. The Mossberg Patriot is a sleeper and thought to be not good because of the price point. I am not a fan of skinny barrels. I bought one of these just because of its features and light weight. Glad I did it will be a good hunting rifle. It did not get MOA with Hornady factory ammo, but I have got sub-MOA with handloads. I did get the higher end one and put an EC-tuner brake on it. BTW the one I got was not a 30-06 but a 7mm PRC. Lots of 30-06's out there but honestly, they are not the best choice with all there is in the market today. I do have one but I'm a gun nut and have a lot of rifles that are not all that, but still nice to have and shoot. Even though the CZ is not real budget rifle it was nice to see all the great features it has. Great video as always.

I had a few Savage rifles through the years and I absolutely love them ❤ Factory bore-sighted, with the included scope, and those scopes are usually pretty nice scopes. Using Remington SPBT 150gr factory loads, I can always get a sub-1" group from literally any rifle. I especially love the fact that they make incredibly accurate rifles for such a low price. If I were buying a new rifle I wouldn't look at anything except savage, except possibly Mossberg. I've never owned anything made by Mossberg except for a model 835 shotgun that I still insist is the best turkey gun ever made, but I've heard good things about their low-cost rifles too, so id probably look at them too. But that's about it.

Just to build on your hunting accuracy point, it’s that first shot that matters most. And due to improved production processes, today’s factory barrels don’t require fouling. You can clean them after each use and see virtually no POI shift with clean, cold bore shots taken days or months apart. And your barrel will thank you for keeping it consistently clean, rather than consistently dirty.

I have reduced the calibers of my firearms as much as possible. Currently, I only have 30-06, 8x57 and 7.62x39, because I like old stuff. Two weeks ago, I went hunting for the first time. The guide suggested that I use a 30-06 with scope. Although I have 5 of them, including 2 Sako 85 Bavarian, I took a Chinese SKS without scope and caught a 200 lb male black bear at 100 feet with one 7.62x39 SP round. I chose the SKS because it is cheap, reliable, and semi auto. Another advantage I found during this hunt is that the gunshot is not that loud, so don’t have to wear earplugs or hearing protection.

Not a fan of Mossberg rifles myself. They look alright, looks wise, but they are not well made on how receiver mates to stocks. Basically no recoil lug support, and some were breaking at that weak point in the stock. I like their shotguns though. The Ruger RAR, Howa, Savage Trail Hunter, possibly Weatherby Vanguard if find deal, are probably your best options for budget rifles at this particular time. Don't waste your hard earned money on junk, and I would consider the Mossberg rifles junk, compared to the other options, for longevity reasons. The Remington 783 is worth a mention too, and something budget, but better built than the Mossberg. Sadly T/C is still not making rifles that I am aware of, but their Venture was a decent rifle. A good shape decent savage 10 or 110 series would be worth looking into for a budget rifle as they always seem to shoot pretty decent.

As far as barrel overheating while sighting in a rifle, take a clean damp (with water) cloth and place on the barrel. Leave it about 5 seconds and remove it. Then use a clean dry cloth to dry the parts of the barrel that was contacted with the damp cloth. That takes about half a minute, and the barrel will be surprisingly cool. I can't wait to hear all the comments, as to why that's just an ignorant idea. LOL.

Ron , when spotting and calling shots use the Clock principal. Example 2 " at 3 o'clock left high at 10 o'clock . Don't mean to be critical but more helpful and easier to understand.

I can tell you from experience, the Howa 1500 DOES eject those cases. Be ready to catch, or search.
