mross58 I’m an owner of a 4th Gen and love it. Have the Sport Model. But every owner knows the 3rds are bullet proof if taken care of. The reason many don’t get them is , the 4th is more stable and obviously has more power and maybe a little more mpg, but not by much there. For me, I got this 06 2 years ago with only 62,800 miles on it, almost 81,000 now. That was my selling point.

I have a 2003 and honestly i think upgrading the tires and suspension is the best thing to do. There is an eibach rear coil that is amazing for the price and pair it with a bilstien 5300 series that work phenomenally (about a 1.5” lift, and I went with King Coilovers up front but there are much cheaper options that will do the job (eibach makes a matched set, bothe provide a variable lift but around 2” to 2.25” is the way to go) And i was a BFG all terrain guy for at least 15 years but a few years ago i tried the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrack’s (same as in the video) and they are better in snow/mud and just as on road worthy as the BFG. I think the SPC upper arm for suspension really compliments the suspension and has a ton of adjustment for alignment. The SPC arm i can be grased and i quite and reliable, and most alignment shops are familiar with it. If you do this it will transform your 4th gen into a vehicle you love. I ended up doing a rear diff with an Auburn locker and some fog light upgrades from Baja Designs. But other than that it is all about maintenance! 265,000 miles of perfect performance for my 4runner and I have no reason to look for a newer model and it has served me on countless winter roads, camp sites, dirt roads, fishing trips, exploration trips, and commuting. I couldn’t be happier with the 4.0 V6 that never quits!

I’m in the market for a 4th gen. Haven’t decided between the 4.0 and 4.7 yet. I love both. My brother has an 03 with the 4.7, and man is that a good smooth engine with strong midrange. If you were going to do like 90% road driving and only 10% off road, would you keep the stock suspension for handling and comfort? I read what people say when they add aftermarket suspension. But I wonder if any of the aftermarket options really “improve” the ride quality, for on road driving?

Thanks for this. So I take it you didn't raise up the back with some coil caps/spacers? Are the Fox coil-overs stock height? And did you have to modify the fender wells? And aside from the wiggling, are you happy with where the light is mounted? That seems like a cool spot for it.

@CanadianGearhead5 жыл бұрын
I've been running stock UCAs since I'm under 3" of lift but I think my ball joints are about to crap the bed. Likely going to upgrade them and raise the ride height a bit while everything is apart. I had to do some trimming to the bumper, push the fender liners forward and remove the mud flaps for the tires
@johnshipps4415 жыл бұрын
I must’ve added more than 3” to mine because the steering got more “mushy” and wants to drift at freeway speeds. I still have my stock UCAs and that’s what I heard could happen at 3 or more inches of lift without changing the UCAs. Also, the lift tore one of my CV axle boots so I had to replace it. I haven’t added off-road tires yet cuz the ones I had still had tons of tread left, but I’ll upgrade them when it makes sense. I’d just like to not have to do any cutting if possible. Maybe go a size smaller than yours?

Good suggestions. I have the same vehicle you have (if that is an 06'). The suspension 100% upgrade it. I went with Bilsteins but I have to admit, it's decent but it's a bouncing ride. If you go over speed bumps with bilsteins you still have to slow down because of how stiff they are. You can hit the speed bump hard but your ass will fly up and you end up looking like you're the hardy boys. Not something my wife enjoys so I have to slow down with those bilsteins still. The good thing about the bilstein 5100s is they do handle great. No nose dive when hard stopping. The actual shock absorption could be better. So if you're here and thinking about getting the Bilstein 5100's, I'd say do with this leaf did and go higher end. Spend 2 grand if you can afford it. You're going to LOVE that ride. I am planning on upgrading the bilstein 5100's I bought next year. Might* go with new tires and rims in 2 years. I also bought those Dough Thorley headers (they're not installed yet) but I will swap them when I change out the exhaust system at the same time. My exhaust pipes look like they could crack anytime now. Anyway. GOOD SUGGESTIONS!

Heya. I have a 2006 Toyota 4runner with 275k miles on the chassis and frame, and 171k on the engine, transmission, and drivetrain (2007 parts). My engine has the check engine light, VSC Off, VSC TRAC, and traction control light lit up like a Christmas tree on my dash. Also, at very low speeds and at low throttle, this sound from exhaust (I don't know if my cats are shot) is like a high-pitched rattling sound, NOT like a rock bouncing around on youtube videos you'd look up online about shot cats. My O2 sensors are all new and have been replaced WITH spacers on them. I took my car to the local automotive shop, they said to fix this they would need to mess with the exhaust, put new O2 sensors on and take the spacers off, then diagnose from there to see what's wrong. It's going to be expensive from them... I also am wanting to do this myself... I have a mechanic friend that told me that my cats need to be replaced but I'm not so sure it's the problem just yet... I think a 285 would be pushing it, might be able to fit if it's aired down a bit
@Mick_A_Knuckle5 жыл бұрын
I've got a 255/75-17 (32" OD) just barely squeezed under my 4th gen. A 275/70-17 is the same diameter. You won't fit a 285/70-17 (33" OD) under there.

@@Mick_A_Knuckle I'm running Toyo Open Country MT's 255/75/17 after I added the Bilstein 5100's. I love the narrow digging tire compared to the wider one for serious off roading. Few people out here get this. Nice job!!!!
@steveeichelberger8064 жыл бұрын
The trailer hitch style effects what fits. The V8 hitch is a beefier hitch than the V6 and restricts the size of tire that fits. If you search the Toyota forums, there’s some good info. BTW a 285/70-17 spare did not fit my V8. It would hit my track bar.

Great videos! May I make a suggestion? Please buy a $20 tripod at Walmart or Walgreens. It makes for better videos and people that are downloading KZbin videos onto their cell phones, which is 78% of the market, find that the videos load faster when there is less jiggly movement. They can also select a higher resolution version of your videos.

Hello guys, I'm thinking on buying a Land Cruiser 200 series or a 4 runner like this on a video. Wich ine should I choose in terms of off-road relatability?!
@CanadianGearhead5 жыл бұрын
Land Cruiser is likely built a bit better, 4runner is smaller and can fit on tighter trails
@rameylewis77305 жыл бұрын
I have both a 4th gen and a 200 series and my 4th gen is better for 4x4ing because it is lighter, narrower, and easy to mod. For regular driving and comfort, the 200 kicks butt.

I love the set up! I currently have a 4th gen that I painted quicksand like some of the newer 4Runners. I have plastidiped wheels, grille, and emblems. My issue is I have some aggressive off-road tires but they are only 265/65/17 and I feel like if I lifted it, that it would look bad. I feel like a lift with tires that small would look goofy. Any suggestions???
@danny87395 жыл бұрын
I just lifted my 4runner 3 inches and I'm still on stock tires... About to get 265/70/17 though but yeah it does look funny but I wear it with confidence because I'm a broke college student and the lift looks good other then the small ass tires. It's fine for now dude don't worry really. But if you got the money get the right after the lift.
@CanadianGearhead5 жыл бұрын
It might look silly on some vehicles but I think the 4runner can pull the look off better than others
@peytonfristoe26945 жыл бұрын
Canadian Gearhead do you think a 2 inch lift would look good on 265/65/17 size tires? I wish I could see what it would look like before I buy the lift.
@peytonfristoe26945 жыл бұрын
danny the only issue is right when I got it, i got the stock tires in a aggressive off-road tread so I’m not due for tire for a while. I might try to get a 2 inch rough country lift. Hopefully it looks good.
@Mick_A_Knuckle5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it'd look goofy with 265/65-17. 265/70-17 (31.5 OD) look good with a 2 inch lift, but IMO 275/70-17s are 32" OD and are just right.

I finally have my hands on one. It’s an 05 V6 which is okay, but thankfully it has the five speed and not the four. Want to upgrade a few things on her and eventually get a V8 model. Nice vids by the way CG.

You really don’t need the 8 unless you plan on towing. The 6 is a great engine if taken care of.

I want to put a light in that same location on the bumper. I’m having trouble taking off the lower grill insert. How were you able to do it?
@CanadianGearhead4 жыл бұрын
If you have an 03-05 model I believe the grill is part of the bumper. You'll need to cut it off. It just unclips on the facelifted models like mine

I love my '07 my only regret was not getting a 4wd... Do you guys think it's still worth putting a roof tent and tires on it?
@CanadianGearhead5 жыл бұрын
If you get stuck in the mud, at least you can live in your tent until someone comes to rescue you haha
@dominiquestephenson1955 жыл бұрын
Get a plate front bumper and at least a 10k lb winch, least that way u can get unstuck. Other than that have fun. It’s still a damn good truck for over landing.
@davidryan79815 жыл бұрын
If it's worth it to you, do it. On the other hand if you're gonna always second guess not having a 4wd, just sell it and get a 4wd. If you don't really need the 4wd, then don't worry about it and just enjoy your vehicle.
@Theyralltakenfu5 жыл бұрын
If you live in a climate that never requires a 4WD, then why sweat it, just do the mods you want. You were smart enough to buy a 4Runner, I'm guessing you know how and where to drive it without getting stuck and having issues. Have fun.
@jameskocks47342 жыл бұрын
I bought one with 2wd and the V8. No it doesn't have 4wd. It doesn't have rust either. If you don't need it it's a waste of money. A good set of tires and you'll be fine.

No really a huge difference unless you need to tow. V6 will just get a tad better fuel economy and you don’t have to worry about the timing belt on the V8
