It's interesting how some of the advice contradicts each other. While it can be confusing, I think it's great to see that there are many ways to get good and enter the industry.

I wouldn't say they contradict each other, but rather they are all different roads that lead to the same destination.

TheHunterWolf the journey is the destination and it’s all subjective there is no good or bad art they need to make that clarification that there talking about technically because they often say “bad” art.

Loved the comment about focusing on drawing the art you like to actually draw versus drawing the art you like to look at. The art you like to look at and the art you love to create can be very different animals. It took me about twenty years to realize that.

1:10 Some solid advice that can be used in other fields as well. It is soul crushing to have your project being cancelled when you pour all your time and heart into it.

My notes: Find what you want to do Have a personal project What you like to see ≠ what you like to do Do things in chunks and work out your craft Have fun and draw everyday Ignore haters Make things you like even if you hate it Don't be in a rush, develop your skills. Maintain the excitement. Maintain the fun factor. Don't commit too much. Create a small portfolio Be ready to take the criticism Don't show things until you're ready. No excuses. Go online. Seek out advice from people who inspire you. Watch/listen to the draftsman podcast Learn and get good at your craft. Give 100% Push yourself Draw all the time Get obsessed with it Talk to everybody Talk to your serious art friends Draw everyday for at least an hour Carry your sketchbook around like a cellphone Don't worry about style, it restricts you. Study the masters. Go to museums for hours and hours. Absorb things. Do your own thing. Go to social media and share Your art. Continue what you stand for. Keep experimenting! That's the best way to improve. Keep your love of art close. That's the fuel.

Draw every day. Cover miles of paper and canvas. Ask your role models for help and advice. Buy a museum membership and go study the work of artists you look up to. Never "donate" your art or work "for exposure." Doing that perpetuates an anti-artist myth that our labor isn't valuable, which drags ALL artists down. Don't hem and haw about your prices. When asked what a piece costs, declare the price decisively; nobody will think your work is valuable if they see that YOU don't believe it's valuable. Study life drawing. DON'T JUST COPY ANIME. DON'T JUST COPY ANIME. DON'T JUST COPY ANIME. Anime (and manga) styles are full of bad anatomical drawing habits, and your work will be lost in a sea of similar-looking art. As you can, invest in better and better supplies. And one of the most important things: request AND ACCEPT critique. You won't succeed if you can't take critique, including notes about flaws or weaknesses in your work.

Great advice for new artists. The only thing I don't understand is "becoming obsessed with your art." It's actually REALLY difficult for me to become obsessed over anything. I lose interest really fast because of certain personal issues, so obsession is something I can't comprehend.

Honestly. The guy talking about how you can only make it if you're committed to the point of obsession really isn't considering the artists that are different. There are obsessed artists, but there are also people who can get overwhelmed very quickly and breakdown. Those people CAN make it. But it's harder. I've gone through some shit in my life, and I used to be obsessed with my art, but after going through so much, I think about my life as a whole far more. And if you get obsessed with your art, it can also distract you from flaws in your work that you need to improve on. And to even be obsessed with your work to begin with, you have to be in a positive mindset or space, and if you've had stuff happen to you, that's not easy at all, and it can negatively impact your art. So this guy's advice is definitely nowhere near perfect or solid. The important thing is taking time to take care of yourself, fixing your problems, and making sure you can limit stress as much as possible. Music also works really well.

Work hard, study a lot, be productive, but most of all, remember to HAVE FUN, know when and how to rest and generally have some life, go to places, meet new people. It's great to grind, but also remember that It's a long term run, there's no need to be in too much rush or putting way too much preasure on yourself. You don't need to become a successful arist in one year.

Not a new artist, been teaching myself since 4th grade (when I started to take art seriously). Now as a college student taking my first ever classes this is some great advice! Some of this stuff is what my professor tells me. Seriously, take this advice to heart. Another word of advice someone told me is you can't improve your craft without failing. Don't expect everything to be perfect the first time you try something new. For instance I'm working with copic markers but instead of flat color I have to give it a synthetic texture (think van gogh texture) for my first portfolio piece for my art class. That proved to be a huge challenge for me. With the deadline only two weeks away, I have to remind myself that even if it doesn't come out perfect and I fail, I can aleast say it was a learning experience.

Some people will say "Draw every day" is bad advice but it's because they don't understand that it depends on what your goal is. Like going to the gym... are you interested in just being good enough, or in being the best version of yourself. You don't need to draw every day to merely become an artist. But you need to draw everyday to become competitive (either with others, or with a past version of yourself). Training everyday = improving faster in a shorter amount of time. So, it's THE most important advice IF you're aiming high, which not everyone is naturally competitive enough to do so.
@ZTRCTGuy
@ZTRCTGuy 2 жыл бұрын
There's truth in that principle, but I wouldn't apply it to the gym, your muscles need time to rest, and so does your brain.
