I have this saw, bought about a year ago. Changes I've made to it: 1. Added a soft-start module (rewiring required). 2. Replaced the crappy miter gauge with one from Kregg. 3. Replaced the 24 tooth blade with a decent one 4. Bought a matching zero-clearance throat plate 5. Folded the legs down - they actually have tiny "feet" when folded to set on a table. 6. Built an outfeed table which the saw sits in (Thanks to 3x3 Custom on KZbin for this idea) 7. Bought a dado set from Freud. 8. Bought a push block (can't remember the brand) to save my fingers. The saw itself is fine, but underpowered for very large cuts. However the rack and pinion fence is great and adjustments for blade alignment is easy to do. This will be fine until I move up to a used cabinet saw.

You did this very well, all the important points covered and explained. As a cabinetmaker for 40+ years, I have seen and used most types of saws from massive 12" production units to drag to the jobsite and hope you get lucky. This one would be welcome anywhere good work is being done. It would be really helpful if you did a demo of the slightly less used but very necessary operations such as angled cuts, dado setups and mitre guage and very thin piece. Also, both for ease and safety, show how to build a simple, easily attached and removed outfeed support platform. Thanks for your efforts to bring pro level results to the "prosumer".

I just picked this up as my first table saw during a whole home renovation. I chose this after wonderful experiences with their cordless driver and oscillating multi-tool. They're affordable, come with chargers and batteries that aren't trash, and are very powerful. I've been very impressed with what Skil has to offer and this saw has exceeded my expectations at this price point. Obviously, I don't have much to compare it to, but I can say its been a workhorse and made me a repeat customer of Skil products.

I've got this table saw. And it's a damn good saw. It struggles past the 1 inch thick stuff. I installed a DeWalt construction 60 tooth blade on mine. It really woke up the saw. Also on the wide rips if you have the fence to the left, flip the guard piece down and it supports the piece you are cutting. I had the DeWalt jobsite saw and I like this one better.

I love the rack and pinion fence though the plastic gears may not hold up over time and a lot of use. For a DIYer who is looking for accuracy and may only do a few projects a year, I think there is a lot of value in this saw, at the price point. Particularly with the integral stand, which adds $40 - $50 dollars in value vs. a simple aftermarket stand. Take that savings and reinvest it in a higher quality blade, and this could be a really nice saw.

I have watched several in depth comparison on the major players in this market. In one comparison against seven other saw the Skill finished first in the power of cutting but overall finished fourth or fifth of the eight saws. And considering Ridge finished last I guess fourth or fifth ain't to bad?! This passed Black Friday I purchased a KOBALT from Lowe's as I was in need of a new saw and theirs was a $100 dollars off retail. The two things I liked about the Skill was the power rating over the BIG NAME'S and the geared fence system. As a retired log home builder the KOBALT saw was the best bang for the buck at $229.99!!! @Mike I’m going for this SKIL saw for my first table saw as well (found a DEAL at Kent Building Supplies in Canada now for 399 , approx USD 310). I’d pick the SKIL over Ridgid R4514 / R4518 just for its Rack and Pinion fence! But if that’s not an issue for you, then by all means go for the RIDGID as it has the lifetime service agreement and give you the same or better performance.

@@sreevatsan I found a deal on the Ridgid 4514 for $215 plus shipping on a refurbished unit. I'm going to try it out and see what I think. If I don't like it, I should be able to sell it for what I paid or slightly more without an issue. If I don't like the Ridgid, I will definitely get the Skil.

I was looking for options for my very first table saw just the other day and I happened across this same saw and thought it looked like a great option. Didn't want to go super cheap like those Ryobi's or Hercules'. I feel much better about my findings after stumbling upon this video of yours. Also thank you for the calibration lesson. That'll be helpful!

Tony, the Hercules is a better saw, but it's much like Loutenenant... Dan...he's got no legs.

Those built in legs are genius! I've been looking at getting a dewalt. I'm just a home use builder/crafter so this will probably be good for me.

Thanks for the demo! Would have liked you to use the miter guage also. Wish me luck. I just placed an order for one. Arrives on Monday the 9th of August.

It’s not just the piece will make the machine cost more by making it metal, it’s that process of mass machining and metal pricing. So it will more than double the cost. Plastic is pretty durable and a lot cheaper to replace vs metal. Great review overall.

I have a built a table to hold a table saw which provides an outfeed area. Can this saw be fastened down to a sheet of 3/4 plywood and or can the legs be removed for that purpose? Thanks, by the way, great video.

I just bought this saw. So far, loving it. Menard's, if there's one near you, has these for 289 right now on sale.

I like the built in stand, the two items I see as an issue is the plastic gears, and the dado width it can handle. The specs say 5/8”, so it cannot handle a dado the width of a 1x board. You would have to do two passes. Most other saws are at least 3/4”, Other than that, the price is great, and it appears stable. I wish the non-cabinet saws were gear driven for setting the angle of the blade instead of moving the tilt by hand.

seems like way too much plastic. I am still leaning towards DeWalt.

How was the table for flatness? That's one thing I always hope to see in table saw reviews and almost never do. I've seen comparable table saw tables vary by as much as 1/8", which is more than enough to mess your cuts up on any ripping.

This is a jobsite saw. That type of accuracy doesn't really matter for the type of work this saw is intended for.

ello greetings from the UK. first off i just want to say im a big fan of ur channel and ur videos defo one of the best channels in the genre of construction n building keep up the great work! so wow! im impressed with this table saw from wat i cud see it is powerful and accuurate to cut a ribbon of oak with no stalling or juddering with relative ease was reqlly impressive! it maybe loud but thats nothing a pair of ear defenders wont solve. so this is a a tool i might consider getting as ive been looking for a portable table saw for a while now and this looks perfect for wat i do. im a carpenter by trade but can and have worked in other trades such as plastering, tiling, plumbing, bricklaying, and minimal electrics. so u cud say im a muliti trader but wat i work as and primarily do is fit or instal plantation shutters the averge jo and general pulic call them blinds but there not exactly blinds same concept and function though. so id like to see how well this saw wud cut a shutter frame which in some cases has a acrilic or lacqour paint finish over mdf probably wud need a fine tooth blade. also some of the reviews u do in the future please include us brits as the power source n output is different and wud like to know if some of these tools are avalible in the UK and EU any who i think ive rambled enough on this comment lol peace love respect n hounar!

I'd like to see how you rank portable tables saws like you did with the drills and impacts. What's the best for a new comer and pros?????
@markfernandes23964 жыл бұрын
I think you should always use a material support at the end of any table saw and keep a push stick in your pocket, that's just what I think. Also a great blade is always my first choice with any saw. If a saw comes with a blade it is usually low qualify.
